In China and even the world, Lufeng is the area where dinosaur fossils were discovered and unearthed in the greatest quantity, most complete skeletons and richest species. Since 1938 when the first dinosaur fossil was discovered in Lufeng, there have been overall about 110 fossils unearthed in Lufeng. In this regard, Lufeng is dubbed as “Hometown of Dinosaurs”. The World Dinosaur Valley was opened to the public in 2008.
Flora and fauna
The Dinosaur Valley is about 75 kilometers from the city of Kunming, capital of Yunnan province. There are frequent buses from Kunming West Bus Terminal (西部汽车客运站) to Lufeng city's bus terminal (28¥). From there you can take a minibus to the Dinosaur Valley (恐龙谷 konglonggu). The minibus (10¥) takes about 40 minutes (30 minutes back to the highway + 10 minutes to the park). Alternatively, if you want to save yourself about two hours, you can ask the driver on the bus from Kunming to drop you off after the toll gate in the entrance to Lufeng, and catch the minibus there (3¥).
There are also buses from Dali to Lufeng that take about 3 hours.
Entry to the park costs 120¥ (as of September 2012).
You can either walk or pay for a ride around the entire park with the tourist cars for 20¥.
The excavated fossils are located in the quarry hall, near the Camp Site. In there, all the information is available in English as well. There are also a lot of attractions for kids, a "laboratory", a movie hall and a few interesting facts about the evolution of dinosaurs that are unfortunately only available in Chinese.
Cable "car" for 10¥, very short but fun ride, strapped into a seat that goes down from the excavation hall area back to the road. You can't get on the ride if you're over 1.9m tall.
Dinosaur toys are surprisingly cheap inside the excavation hall.
There's a restaurant offering pretty standard Chinese food for normal prices (meat dishes from 35¥ and vegetables from 10¥) Rice comes for free even if you don't ask for it.
Finding hotels that accept foreigners in Lufeng is pretty easy. Expect to pay 120¥ for a decent double room.
Unless you plan to spend the night in Lufeng, get there early, as the last bus back to Kunming leaves Lufeng at 17:40 (September 2012). The minibuses back to Lufeng leave every 30 minutes or when full, so make sure you leave the park by 16:30! You can also just walk out of the park, cross the highway (take the middle lane, it will turn and get you to the other side safely) and flag down any of the buses going from Dali back to Kunming. They will stop if they're not full and charge you between 25¥ for a small bus to 40¥ for an air-conditioned express bus.
