It is hard to even believe that Laguna Lachua is one of Guatemala's most magnificent sights of natural beauty because it is not famous and it is located in a completely unexplored area.
Discover a precious National Park in Guatemala, an amazing natural treasure that also has one of the most important wetlands in the whole world; The Lachua Lagoon. This amazing place is surrounded by breathtaking views and abundant vegetation, rich in flora and fauna variety and with crystal clear emerald waters, this is a wonderful place to go and relax or take a ton of pictures.
Flora and fauna
Yet with views of imposing mountains and through a few kilometres of thick rainforest housing snakes, tapirs, toucans and a vibrant kaleidoscope of butterflies, it is an idyllic off-the-beaten track spot and, on our visit at least, thankfully odour free.
Unfortunately, a trip to Laguna Lachua is quite a trek from anywhere other than nearby Playa Grande. Although it is on the main bus route from Coban – Playa Grande, and accessible via a connection at Rayaxche if you are travelling from Flores Island in Peten department, travellers will still face several hours. One of the best plans is include Laguna when in your travel plans is included the visit to Semuc Champey in Coban department for example. From Coban, there are buses going in the direction of Playa Grande and Chisec in the "Terminal de buses del Norte" that will drop you in front of the entrance of the park (2h30-3h ride, 50Q); they run every half hour. To go back, the last bus is at 16h30 and they pass every half hour.
You could also join organized groups or shuttles that run between Guatemala City and Coban, however you will still need extra transportation.
Relax at the white sand beaches and enjoy the wonderful crystal clear emerald waters at Lachua Lagoon. Observe the magnificent variety of birds, animals and vegetation and capture them with your camera.
There is only one hostel without electricity that costs 70Q a night. There is one shower, bathrooms and a really basic cooking area.
There is a campingsite and you can rent a tent in the park. No electricity.
