Other option is to take the local yellow Bumi company bus which leaves from Kuala Terengganu at 7.30am, 10am, 11.30pm, 2.30pm and 4pm. From Kuala Besut the timetable is erratic: approximate timetable is 7am, 8.30am, 10.30am, 1pm, 2pm and 4.30pm. The bus stop in Kuala Besut is located in the village near the market square (around 1km from the jetty). Other option is to wait next to the bridge and flag down the bus. The bus is coming from the bridge, to the pier, to the bus station and then back to kuala terengganu. Service is limited on Friday (usually 2 rides only: the first in the morning and 1 at lunch time). The bus cost is 10.80MYR and take 2.20hours to go from/to Kuala Terengganu
Alternatively, you can go to Prangin Mall and ask any bus counter for a ticket to Kota Bharu (RM37 or RM38). When you arrive at Kota Bharu Bus Terminal. From KB Bus terminal, follow directions under "from Kota Bharu" above.
Taxi drivers may try to take you to a travel agent of their choosing, who will pay them commission (which gets charged to you). Tour operators in town can arrange transfers to Taman Negara National Park (RM90), Cameron Highlands (RM75) & Kuala Lumpur (RM70). If you are returning from the Perhentian Islands you'll need to catch an early boat to make it in time, so advance reservations are recommended.
The nearest railway station is Tanah Merah, although most travellers opt for Kota Bharu's better-serviced Wakaf Bahru station instead.
Yaudin guesthouse - RM20/night - Cheap but very bad quality with holes in the bed sheets and lots of mosquitos or bed bugs. Better off getting into Kuala Besut early enough to go straight to the islands.
Bus station is less than 3 minutes walk from the jetty. Bus ticket can be purchase at the respective bus company ticket counter.
There are express buses at 9am in the morning and 8-9pm at night depending on destination and route.
Shared taxi depart at 9am, 1pm and 5pm. Cityliner buses to the city center of Kota Bharu leave at 7:30am, 9am, 10am, 11am, 12:30am, 2pm, 3pm, 4pm, 5:30pm and at 6:30pm (RM 6 per person, takes about 90 mins. depending on traffic). You reach the bus station, when you head right from the jetty, across the little square at the public restrooms, go left after the "tour office", then enter the small street to the right and at the end you will find the red and yellow painted bus stop.
