At 3 km from the Japanese Bridge, in the north of Phnom Penh is the small island of Koh Dach, also called the "Silk Island".
Measuring 12 kilometers long and 3 km wide, this small island in the Mekong is known for the silk weaving. This traditional activity is practiced by women on antique looms under the houses. Unfortunately, this activity tends to decline due to the importation of industrial fabrics from other Asian countries. Once on the island, you may be asked by silk vendors who will offer to show you their house, their looms and their products and invite you to try to weave yourself. The atmosphere is generally good-natured and prices relatively low, allow the continuation of this traditional activity.
Several ferries (500 riels / person) serves the island of Koh Dach but the closest to Phnom Penh is the Preak Leap ferry. From the north of Phnom Penh, take the Japanese Friendship bridge and continue for three kilometers on the RN6 until Crystal Hotel. Here, take the small street on your right (50 meters) that leads to a parallel road to the banks of the Mekong River, turn left and about fifty meters you come face to Preak Leap ferry. Do not hesitate to ask the way to people if you can not find. Once crossed the Mekong, you will be at the southern tip of the island.
Upon arrival on the island, moto-dops and tuk-tuks will offer to take you where you want; however the best way to visit the island is walking or by bicycle.
A real little oasis outside the city, the island of Koh Dach is a good idea to tour for those wishing to experience rural Cambodia for a day or for a few days of immersion. The island has a small beach (entrance fee 2000 riels) where you can rent a small bamboo hut with feet in the water to enjoy the sunset. There are also some beautiful temples and scenic trails for walking.
Community Silk Island On the small island of Koh Oknha Tey, $ 1 entry. In a small park with some rather kitsch statues and looms, an English-speaking guide will explain you the steps in the creation of silk, from breeding worms to weaving. Interesting for those who wish to learn more about this activity.
