Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market
Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market (the name in Thai is ‘ตลาดน้ำคลองลัดมะยม’) is one of the famous local floating markets, located nearby Bangkok. The reason why this market is quite famous compared to Amphawa Floating Market or Lam Phaya Floating Market is because of its beautiful atmosphere, nice nature and has a variety of local food there.
In the past, Thai people were transported by riding boats on the canal, so they live or sell things alongside the canal. Nowadays, most of those canals have been filled in to make way for the road because most Thai people travel by car or bus, but some of the canals are still in use for transportation and land nearby the canal has floating markets.
"Chuan" is the founder of Klong Lat Mayom Floating Market. It was founded on November 24, 2004. This market area is around 30 acres (no one owns this area). He said ‘the floating market is owned by everyone, so no rent fees are collected.’ During the first opening, there were around 20 villagers to do the floating market and it was made public by using the pamphlet/handbill.
The purpose of founding Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market is for local people who want their community to have their own community market because they have famous fresh fruits, vegetables, and local desserts, etc. Moreover, they want Thai people and the tourists to get into the floating market to eat, shop and do activities there.
Khlong Lat Mayom Floating Market is located on Bang Lamad Road off the Bang Khae-Bang Bua Thong Outer Ring Highway, Taling Chan, Thonburi. TThis floating market is quite near Bangkok - the Thai people and the foreigners can easily get in this place.
Going there by public transportation is not quite ideal, so the easiest way is to take a taxi or drive to get there directly. Another option is, first, you can take the BTS (in Bang Wa BTS Station) and then take the taxi directly to this place and it will take about 15 minutes to get in the market (approx - 80 to 100 Baht). If you want to return to the BTS Station, it is better to get a taxi to take you there, wait for you and take you back because you might find it hard to get a return taxi (Guides, 2015).
The market is only open on Saturday – Sunday: from 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM and on public holidays in Thailand so plan accordingly.
