By public minivans.

See[edit][add listing]

  • Air Terjun [Waterfall] Dolo, located on the eastern slope of Gunung [Mount] Wilis, some 20 km west of Kediri. Drive west from the town centre [crossing the Brantas River along the way, and passing through the Semen Bus Station] towards Pohsarang. About 5 km before Pohsarang you will see a fork. If you are heading towards this waterfall, take a left turn. [WARNING: the first 50 metres of this road, past the fork, is quite steep].
  • Selomangleng Cave (Goa Selomangleng), located on the slope of Mt Klotok (Gunung Klotok) to the west of Kediri has two small caves and interesting reliefs. There is also a swimming pool just beside it.
  • Sumberpodang, located in Semen, Kediri. There is fresh steam with pine forests. There is also a Balinese cafe near the stream.
  • Mt Kelud (Gunung Kelud), in the southeast of the Kediri Regency. This mountain is a quite active stratovolcano mountain with crater on the top.
  • St. Mary Lourdes Cave and Pohsarang Church, located on the slope of Mt Wilis to the west of Kediri. Pohsarang Church was built by Romo Wolters, one of the first Roman Catholic missionaries in Java. St. Mary Lourdes Cave is a replica of the St. Maria Lourdes Cave in France. There is a huge monument of St. Mary in front of the cave. For more details about Pohsarang, please see below.
  • A number of Hindu temples/historical relics of an ancient kingdom.

Do[edit][add listing]

Pohosarang hill, with statues showing the story of Christ
  • Christians and Catholics can visit Pohsarang for a pilgrimage or simply enjoy the beauty of a traditionally designed, Hindu-Javanese style church complex. It is notable for being the site of a famous Maria Grotto [the cave of Mary the mother of Jesus Christ] and a spring equipped with several water taps, where you can get some water [ready to drink] after saying a prayer. It is believed that praying here and taking some water from this spring ensures that your wish will come true. There is also a series of "Stations of the Cross" [known locally as "Jalan Salib" = Way of the Cross] with beautiful sculptures depicting various stages of Christ's crucifixion.

NOTES: There are some touts offering souvenirs especially during the high season - ignore them! Souvenir shops and eateries abound at the site.

Buy[edit][add listing]

Tofu [tahu], a specialty of this city. It is also sold in the form of snacks like stik tahu[tofu stick] and tahu pong ["hollow" fried tofu].

Eat[edit][add listing]

  • Tofu [see above].
  • Soto Kediri. Unlike most variants of soto which is yellow-coloured, it is brown-coloured with some hints of soy sauce and cloves/cinnamon aroma. Served hot with plain rice.

Drink[edit][add listing]

Sleep[edit][add listing]

  • Hotel Penataran
  • Lotus Garden Hotel & Resort. Jalan Jaksa Agung Suprapto 26,

[+62 354] 779999. A bit out of the way but has a nice decor with Chinese antiques at the lobby, a koi fish pond surrounding the restaurant. Welcome drink constitutes a small glass of guava juice. Nice buffet breakfast.

3-star hotels [and up] such as:

  • Hotel Merdeka
  • Hotel Grand Surya

The telephone area code of Kediri is 0354 [add +62 and omit the first zero for international calls.]

Get out[edit]

  • Madiun, a city to the west, of similar size although less crowded. Well known for Nasi Pecel - the local version of "salad rice". This is also a stopover for those heading to the Telaga ["Pond"] Sarangan in Magetan regency - see the Magetan page for more details.
  • Blitar to the south: the birthplace of Indonesia's first president - Dr. Ir. Soekarno.
  • The tourism town of Batu to the east. Once you drive past Kandangan, the route becomes more scenic but also more dangerous. Watch out for sharp turns along this winding road, a valley right beside the road [near Pujon - about the last 5-10 km of the trip] possible landslides at this road segment during the rainy season, and reckless bus drivers. On a happier note however, this scenic route passes through a tropical forest, the beautiful Selorejo dam with a mountain backdrop, and a mountainous terrain up to the Batu town border. You are also rewarded by stunning views of the Coban Rondo waterfall [in the Pujon area] which is a short trip away from the main road. The waterfall is a short walk from the parking area.

In a nutshell: feel free to take this route if you are going to Batu, given that you are visiting during the dry season and you exercise extra caution. Please refer to the Batu page for more details. If you have some history or tendency of motion sickness, bring some Antimo tablets with you. [This is an over-the-counter medicine, and therefore can be purchased at pharmacies, most supermarkets and even some minimarkets].
