Kakunodate is a small city in Akita prefecture. Known as Samurai town and Kyoto of Tohoku.

Get in[edit]

The Akita Shinkansen Komachi (こまち) from Tokyo, Sendai and Morioka makes a regular stop at the JR Kakunodate station. Komachi provides hourly service from Tokyo and the journey takes roughly 4hrs from Tokyo, 2.5hrs from Sendai and 1hr from Morioka. Please make sure to book your seat in advance, as seats on all Komachi trains are all reserved. Japan Rail Pass is accepted.

Walking is really the only viable option in this small, compact city.

Kakunodate is well known for well preserved Samurai Houses scattered around along Bukeyashiki Street (which means Samurai House Street) and forming as a Bukeyashiki Samurai District. Some of these houses are open to public.

  • Paper Balloon Festival (紙風船上げ Kamifuusen Age), 西木町紙風船広場, +81 0187 43-3352. Feb 10, starts at 3PM. In this festival dating back more than a century, large decorated paper balloons are lit and float off in the evening sky. The evening can get cold, so warm clothing is recommended.  edit
  • Fire and Snow Festival (火振りかまくら Hiburi Kamakura), (The festival takes place at several locations across town.), +81 0187 54-2700, [1]. Feb 13-14, starts at 5PM. In a sort of purification ritual, people whirl flaming pieces of straw on a string above their heads. Onlookers can participate if they like. If so, a hat covering one's hair is a good idea.  edit
