Jigjiga is since 1995 the capital of the Somali Region. It is one of few places in the region the Ethiopian government fully controls. When traveling with bus towards Somaliland Jigjiga is a non-avoidable stop on the road. However, due to the conflict between Ethiopia, the guerilla and Somalia, travelers should stay away from the region as much as possible, including Jigjiga.

Bajaj are the main method of transportation in town. Easy, quick, and affordable. You can get a airport taxi for a standard rate, but in town transportation is largely bajaj.
The recently built (2018) Istanbul Plaza Hotel is an excellent choice of places to sleep. Rooms are up to date and spacious, and security is excellent. The fried chicken is a lunchtime favorite, as is the evening schwarma.
ZM Hotel has been a Jijiga staple for years. The hotel serves a wide variety of Ethiopian standards, along with western cuisine, as the chef was trained in the United States.
