Jaen is the capital of the province Jaén and part of the Cajamarca region in Peru.
The city of Jaén is the capital of the Jaén Province in the Cajamarca Region of Peru. At an altitude of 740 meters above sea level it is considered part of the high jungle region of Peru. It has a warm and humid climate. Temperatures fluctuate between 15 and 33 degrees Celsius. In the region mainly rice and coffee are produced, however also one of the best cacao in Peru.
There are two options as off 08/2018. You take a direct bus or first a combi to "Bagua Grande" (S/.10, 2h) and change there to a combi to "Jaen" (S/.5, 1h). Busses and combis leave at the central terminal (Av. Atahualpa) outside of the city center. There is a new direct service that goes from Chachapoyas to Jaen airport in a shared-shuttle, which takes around 5 hours. More information can be found at AndesTransit.
Since 20th July 2018 there is a new convenient option to get from Ecuador to Jaén. The Ecuadorian bus company Nambija has started a direct connection from Yantzaza (Ecuador) via Loja, Vilcabamba, Zumba, La Balza (border), San Ignazio (Peru) to Jaén. Currently there is one bus daily leaving Yantzaza at 3:45 arriving in Jaén around 19:00. Viceversa the is one leaving Jaén at 13:00 and arriving in Yantzaza around 3:30 the next day. In August 2018 they might add a second one daily departing Yantzaza at 11:50 towards Peru and Jaén towards Ecuador at 3:00. The tickets from Vilcabamba to Jaén cost US$20.60, from Loja US$21.60 and from Yantzaza USD$26.00. The busses in Jaén arrive at and leave from the Terminal Binacional located at the intersection of Av. Pacamura and Alfonso Arana Vidal where also the Taxi VIP is based. The ticket must be paid in US$ also if you are buying the ticket in Peru. (If you are in Jaén, you can withdraw US$ at e.g. the BCP ATM at the Plaza de Armas.) The Nambija ticket office is also located at the Terminal Binacional (open daily from 9:00 to 13:00 and from 16:30 to 19:00). You can also call the Jaén office during these hours: +51 964 059 761. A mototaxi takes you from there to the center for S/.2.
The road north to Ecuadorian town Vilcabamba, via Zumba, is only partly paved and mostly very curvy and narrow but offers amazing views. The road continuing to Chachapoyas is in great condition and beautiful to see.
Mototaxis can be found anywhere and take to all places in the center for S/.2 per ride.
