Hulikal Ghat or Balebare Ghat is one of the ghats of Western Ghats of India. Hulikal or Balebare Ghat is located in Shimoga district bordering Udupi district of Karnataka state. It is one of ghats by which Karavali region is connected to Malenadu in Karnatak.


Hulikal ghati is a region in Western ghats of Karnatak. The ghat has evergreen forest with thick canopy of trees.It is aided by heavy rainfall during Monsoon season starting from June to September.


Kannada is a language.Havyaka Kannada a variant of Kannada is spoken in rural areas. Other common languages are Tulu,Konkani and also to small extent English .

By Road[edit]

There is state highway which connects Udupi district to Shivamogga district running through this ghat. Over the years the traffic in this state highway has increased due to lorries carrying LPG cylinders and Petroleum products.The highway connects Udupi to Nagara, Hosanagara, Sagara and Shivamogga.

By Railway[edit]

Udupi,Barkur, Kundapura are nearest railway stations on Konkan railway route. Shimoga ( Shivamogga ) and Sagara Jambagaru (Sagara ) are nearest railway stations on Bengaluru to Taleguppa route.

By Air[edit]

Mangaluru which is important city of coastal Karnataka has international airport. Earlier Mangalore airport was known as Bajpe airport. The name has been changed after expansion of airport and shifting of passenger terminal from Bajpe to Kenjar village.

Get around[edit]

The villages surrounding Hulikal ghat can be reached by roads. There are some private buses which run regularly between Udupi town and Sagara town which pass through this ghat. The conditions of roads are unpredictable which can be bad or worse sometimes. The roads especially during monsoon may be flooded or blocked by fallen trees or landslides.Public transport is poor in interior areas and hence taxi's have to be relied upon.Mastikatte, Yeddur, Nagara and Hosangadi are nearby villages to Hulikal.

The Hulikal ghat is dense forest area, It has wild animals and venomous snakes.Keep safe distance from them. Carry torches and rain wear during monsoon season.Hulikal ghat lacks medical facility.
