Grundy is the county seat of Buchanan County, in Southwest Virginia, near the border with Kentucky and West Virginia.

Get in[edit]

Direct air travel to Grundy is virtually impossible unless you own a private aircraft. Grundy Municipal Airport is about 5 miles from town but it is not served by any commerical airlne. The closest airport to Grundy will be Tri-Cities Regional Airport in Bloutville, TN. Most people that travel to Grundy will be on Route 460 which runs through the entire town.

Get around[edit]

US Route 460 is essentially the only road through Grundy.

See[edit][add listing]

The Flood Project: Grundy made national news because of a large flood project which essentially moved the entire town across the river to avoid future floods. The Levisa Fork River which runs through the heart of downtown Grundy has caused major flooding on more than one occasion.

Breaks Interstate Park: It isn't in the town of Grundy but it is very close. The park sits on the "Break" between Kentucky and Virginia. It is literally referred to as "The Grand Canyon of the South."

Do[edit][add listing]

Breaks Interstate Park: It's a beautiful park that offers great views, a large lake, and many campground areas.

Willowbrook Country Club (Golf-Course): A well-landscaped, challenging, 18 hole course only miles from Grundy.

Hiking/Trail Running/Cycling: Virtually the entire town has outdoor options available as it is nestled in the Applachian Mountains.

Eat[edit][add listing]

Peking Chinese: It's a suprisingly good chinese restaurant for the area. The food ranges from basic Chinese options (Fried Rice, Lo Mein, Seasame Chicken) to a large buffet with anything from various asian dishes to crab legs and other American fare.

El Sombrero: A reasonably new Mexican restaurant near the downtown Wal-Mart shopping center. The food it typical of what one might expect from a Mexican restaurant. Really good enchiladas and all the chips you can handle.

Serendipity: College bar across the river from the Appalachian School of Law.

Dotson's: Small American style restaurant at the lower end of town. Awesome hot dogs!

The Rainbow: A Grundy tradition that has been revamped by a local family. Great good and great service.

Bellacino's: Italian-American food. Their grinders are their claim to fame.

Fast Food: Subway(x2), McDonalds, Dairy Queen, Hardees, Pizza Hut, and Pizza Plus

Drink[edit][add listing]

Most restaurants serve beer but finding liquor will be a bit more difficult. Buchanan County is basically a dry county when it comes to restaurants and their ability to serve liquor. The only restaurant that serves liquor in the town is El Sombrero. Otherwise liquor will need to be purchased at the state-owned VA ABC stores.

Get out[edit]

Wise, VA: Home of The University of Virginia's College at Wise and multiple restaurants. It is approximately 45 miles away

Bristol VA/TN: Home to Bristol Motor Speedway, great dining options, beautiful scenery, and music venues. Approx: 80 miles away.

Abingdon, VA: It is a town of around 8,000 people and it is a history lovers delight. If you are a fan of the revolutionary'll like Abingdon. It's also home to the Barter Theatre which is the state theatre of Virginia.

Pikeville, KY: Similar to Grundy culturally speaking but quite a bit larger...HOWEVER...Pikeville does have an annual festival called Hillbilly Days that is a lot of fun! Pikeville also has the fairly new Eastern KY Expo center which brings musicians and various shows to the area.
