Giessen (Gießen) is a city in Hesse.

Get in[edit]

Giessen is located in Hessen, between Frankfurt and Marburg. It is easily accessible by rail or car.

The city has about 78,500 inhabitants including 30,000 students, so its infrastructure, shopping and cultural offerings are pretty well adapted to that.

Get around[edit]

See[edit][add listing]

  • The most known view in Giessen seems to be the "Elefantenklo" or E-Klo (elefant's toilette), a "masterwork" of the questionable urban planning policy from the late sixties. It is a massive pedestrian overpass found at Selterstor. The popular name is due to the three large octagonal openings in the concrete slab. This says a lot about what is there to see in urban Giessen.
  • There is an dwindling US military base in Giessen.
  • About 10km in the north of Giessen are some relicts of ancient celtic buildings, e.g. a Celtic oppidum was rebuilt. They are located on the Dünsberg, a small wooded hill on which activities such as hiking and cycling can also be done.

Nearby are some old castles , which can be visited too.

  • Interaktive Museum of Mathematics and Physics
  • Museum of the scientist Liebig
  • Kunsthalle Giessen, with temporary art exhibitions
