Embu das Artes
"Embu," as it is often referred to, is also knowns as Land of the Arts or, simply, Embu of the Arts. The name appeared in the 1960s, when a strong movement characterized for the primitive art and the influence of the hippie culture in the city. Painters, artist and artisans have elected the city as the landmark of Brazilian culture.
Embu das Artes is a 20-min drive from downtown São Paulo, approximately 15 miles. Rodovia Regis Bittencourt ( BR-116) leaves São Paulo in the direction of Curitiba, as you pass Taboao da Serra then Itapecerica da Serra. BR-116 is also reached through the Rodoanel ringroad from many other highways surrounding São Paulo.
Purple Line Metro: Get off at Campo Limpo station. At the terminal, take the intermunicipal bus to EMBU CENTRO, which will take you to downtown Embu das Artes.
From Rodoviária do Tietê (main bus terminal), there is a coach bus called EMBU/ENGENHO VELHO you can take on Av. Cruzeiro do Sul, the Avenue the bus terminal is on (cross the street from the bus terminal, and there are a couple of bus stops right there – ask at the information desk at the bus terminal, to see where this specific bus stops).
From the Clinicas Subway Station or in Pinheiros, at “Largo da Batata,” one of the main bus terminals in the neighborhood (Also close to Faria Lima station, Yellow Line on the Metro), there is an EMBU ENGENHO VELHO which takes you to the old center of Embu.
The bus from Anhangabaú station (Red line on the Metro), in downtown São Paulo, will take you the closest to the Arts Fair in downtown Embu. It is the bus with the letterhead EMBU DAS ARTES.
Open Arts Fair Occupying all the central area of the city, the fair invites visitors to take a walk and enter the typical historical of Brazil colonial period. The 940 stalls are divided in the sections of visual and ornamental arts, plants and typical foods. They happen in Largo 21 de Abril, Largo dos Jesuítas and the central streets. Open Saturdays, sundays and holidays from 8h to 18h.
Jesuit attractions Including the Nossa Senhora do Rosário Church and the Museu de Arte Sacra (Sacred Arts Museum). With baroque architecture, the latter contains a wealth of sacred images sculpted in the 18th and 19th century. Largo dos Jesuítas, 67, Tel. 55 11 4704-2654
Capela São Lázaro This chapel was built in 1934 by the Embuense community. Its main attraction are the image of St. Lazare, carved by famous local artist Cassio M'Boy, and the Holy Christ, carved by Zé Santeiro. Between Rua da Matriz and Rua Nossa Sra. do Rosário.
Centro Cultural Mestre Assis de Embu This cultural center has three halls (Josefina Azteca, Ana Moysés e Jaldo Jones) with exhibits from local historical artists. It contains an amphitheatre with capacity for over 150 people, hosting concerts, recitals plays and lectures. Free entrance. Largo 21 de Abri, 29 Tel. 55 11 4781-4462.
Cidade das Abelhas The "City of Bees" apiary is an excellent attraction for children from the age of 3. It contains a museum, eco park, beehives a giant bee and other educational attractions. About 20 minutes from the city center. Estrada da Ressaca, km 7, Tel. 55 11 4703-6460. Entrance fee: R$ 15 (3 to 60 years old).
Memorial Sakai This museum houses the works of Tadakyo Sakai, one of the greatest representatives of terracota sculpting in Brazil. Rua Rebolo Gonzales, 185, Tel. 55 11 4241-5993.
Museu do Índio The space pays tribute to Brazilian native Indian culture, with exhibits on indigenous culture, beliefs, customs and its relatioship with nature. Also, the museum hosts debates and research on the subject. Entrance fee R$3. Rua da Matriz, 54, Tel. 55 11 4704-3278. Parque do Lago Francisco Rizzo The largest park in Embu das Artes contains a 600 thousand square feet lake with a running track around it, playrooms, library and plant nursery. Empório São Pedro Located at the charming Viela das Lavadeiras, this restaurant is also an antique dealer. The contemporary menu varies every week, always maintaining the steak, homemade pasta and risoto options. Viela das Lavadeiras, 28/75, Tel. 55 11 4781-2797.
O Garimpo Probably the most well known restaurant in town. With a pleasant and spacious hall, this restaurant serves variety of dishes (Brazilian and German cuisine) offering live music on weekends. The highlights are the ceviche and the moqueca de abadejo. Rua da Matriz, 136, Tel. 55 11 4704-6344.
Restaurante Bar Buenos Aires Well known for having brought out the traditional Argetinean emapanadas to Brazil, the chef Hugo Ibarzabal commands, alongside Laurane Cerullo, the grills and casseroles at this steakhouse, which also serves good pasta and typical savoury pastries. Tutu's Restaurante The scent of homemade food fills the restaurant hall, whose specialty is the Leitão a Pururuca (Brazilian style oven-roasted suckling pig). Largo 21 de Abril, 260, Tel. 55 11 4781-0655.
Praça de Alimentação The new food plaza is located at the Praça da Lagoa, hosting dozens of stalls with local food, live music on weekends and playgrounds. Mondays to Thursdays, from 8 to 19h; Fridays, Saturdas e Sundays, from 8 to 22h. Avenida Elias Yazbek, Praça da Lagoa.
