Eisenstadt is the capital city of Burgenland in Austria. It is a quite small city with 12.200 inhabitants and an area of 43 square kilometers. The city is 182 m above sea level. The capital consists of the three corporations Eisenstadt, Kleinhöflein im Burgenland and St.Georgen am Leithagebirge. These three are cadastral communities as well as Eisenstadt-Oberberg and Eisenstadt-Unterberg. Kleinhöflein and St. Georgen are well-known for the many Heurigen and the vintners. Eisenstadt-Oberberg houses the Bergkirche with the mausoleum of Joseph Haydn; Eisenstadt-Unterberg is characterized by the Jewish district and the Austrian Jewish Museum.
Eisenstadt has got 4 districts;
Eisenstadt-Oberberg, which impresses with the hill-church (Bergkirche), the unique ‘Klavarienberg’ and the ‘Haydnmausoleum’
Eisenstadt-Unterberg characterizes the former Jew-neighborhood and the old Jew-graveyard
The Winzersdorf Kleinhöflein district which is to the west of Eisenstadt was suburanized 1970
And the district St. Georgen at the Leithagebirge is well known for its nice atmosphere of the taverns, which are typical of Austria.
It's most common to visit Eisenstadt by car.
It's reachable via the A2 (Südautobahn) and the A3 (Südostautobahn) from Vienna. Travelling time is about an hour depending on the traffic situation. Travellers should avoid these highways during the rush hour on work days in the morning (7am-9am) and in the afternoon (3pm-7pm).
The A2 is the connection to southern Burgenland and Styria as well. It takes about 2 hours to get there.
There are two airports reachable within an hour each by car: the Vienna international airport and the Bratislava airport.
While its train network isn't actually that good, Eisenstadt has a pretty widespread bus network. Buses go to all near villages hourly, to Vienna and to the mid and southern Burgenland a few times per day.
Getting around in Eisenstadt is quite easy. This town can be explored by walking and all sights are seen though. Nevertheless there are also a lot of taxis in the city. Their station is at the Church of St. Martin in the inner city. A one-way-ticket is € 5,00; money can be saved with the Bürgerkarte. You can get this card in the Towncall and by showing it the ticket will only be € 2,00. Unfortunately, it's much more expensive going to the villages near Eisenstadt by taxi. These tickets cost between € 10,00 and € 15,00. Moreover, bikes can be rented at various places. The city uses the system nextbike. After the registration, available bikes can be checked and easily rented via the internet.
