The main area of shops, royal villa, gardens and hall of inspiration are close and easy to see in about 4 hours but phra that doi tung is about 9km away and there is no transport to get there so you have to walk which makes it a difficult hike for the day.
Ticket prices are 90 bht for each of the 4 sites or you can buy a ticket for all 4 sites for 220 bht.
Food at the cafeteria and shops is somewhat expensive so if you want a bit cheaper day then pack your own lunch. There are day market down the road a few hundred meters where you can get cheaper foods etc.

There is really only one spot at the top to stay at, the Doi Tung Royal Villa (advance reservations generally required as it books up). However, there are many other accommodation options further down the hill and along the way to both Mae Sai and Chiang Rai.
