Colonsay (Scottish Gaelic: Colbhasa) is a small island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, located north of Islay and south of Mull.

Measuring 10 miles long by 2 miles wide, Colonsay has a population of around 120 people.

By ferry[edit]

Caledonian MacBrayne operate ferries from Oban to Scalasaig - the main village - seven days per week (three between October and March), and from Kennacraig and Port Askaig on Islay twice per week during the summer season. Be aware that motorhomes and caravans are not normally permitted on Colonsay, although you may be able to obtain permission by contacting the Colonsay Estate on +44(0)1951 200211 prior to departure.

By plane[edit]

Hebridean Air Services operate four flights per week to Colonsay from Oban and Islay.

Get around[edit]

There is no public transport on Colonsay. The island's facilities are concentrated in Scalasaig, however a car is useful if you wish to visit the more remote parts of the island.

  • The general store is located in Scalasaig. Open Mon-Sat 0900-1730, Sun 1130-1230.
  • The Bookshop - specialises in books on local subjects. Also sells local craft items. Open Mon-Sat 1530-1730 during the summer season.

  • The Colonsay Hotel has a restaurant that is open to non-residents.
  • The Pantry is located near the pier in Scalasaig.
  • The Garden Cafe at Colonsay House Gardens is open on Wednesdays and Fridays from 1200 to 1700.

  • The Backpackers Lodge - the island's youth hostel is situated in the centre of the island 2km from Scalasaig. Sleeps 16 people. Free WiFi. Check-in takes place at the Colonsay Hotel.
  • There are also numerous self-catering cottages and bed-and-breakfast accommodations on the island [1]
