The Church of Scientology has a rather large presence in Clearwater, which serves as the organization’s “worldwide spiritual headquarters,” especially in the downtown area, where CoS owns most of the property. Many of the buildings are functionally empty, and much of the independent businesses have left said area. That said, it is worth taking a look at their historic properties, such as the Fort Harrison Hotel, which operates as the flagship building of Flag Land Base and long predates the Church’s ownership.

You are likely to see Sea Org members as young as adolescents walking around the downtown area. Understand most Sea Org members, who do not have much outside influence, are 2nd, 3rd, or even 4th generation Scientologists who have never known anything else, or had much choice in their religion. Attempting to “talk them out” of their religion will only put them in a difficult situation where they will be interrogated about and blamed for your actions. If they are kicked out of the Sea Org they will be asked to pay a “freeloader debt” for all of the services they’ve received, which would add up to a hefty amount that would be highly unlikely to be paid on a Sea Org member’s stipend. Do not contribute to a possible family disconnection. Do not yell things at them to cause an effect.

Do not take video on or of Church property without permission while on foot. They utilize both private security and the Clearwater Police Department to enforce anti-trespassing and loitering laws, and there are security cameras recording both video and audio on most corners of their buildings. While they are not physically dangerous to the average person, they have been known for their legalistic efforts. Don’t give them a reason to get you a ticket a best, and a lawsuit at worse. Be respectful if you do decide to visit one of their properties i.e. Don’t put their clergy or parishioners in an uncomfortable position by gawking, harassing, yelling, or asking culturally loaded questions only the top tier of management would know on a need-to-know basis. This puts both you and the other party in danger.
