Chishui (Chinese: 赤水; pinyin: chìshǔi) is a town of about 300,000 people in the northwestern part of Guizhou province, just on the border with Sichuan. It's a gateway to incredible scenic spots of natural biodiversity. Red rock landforms known as "China Danxia", can be found in several different places, and all of them belong to UNESCO world heritage sites. To plan a trip in this area, and visit everything properly, you need at least two days. Danxia landforms are divided into eastern and western sector. Western sector is larger and involves a national park, and various scenic spots on the way to the Chishui great falls. The most famous spot in eastern sector is so called "Buddha rock", but besides it there is a bamboo forest and few more smaller scenic areas.
The closest big city is Luzhou, in southeastern Sichuan (only 50 km away), and it's possible to get there by bus. If you are traveling from Guizhou province, there are regular buses from Zunyi (about 250 km away), and Guiyang. To get in the scenic areas, there are regular buses from the main bus station of Chishui. Ticket is 15 Yuan.
The most beautiful danxia rock scenic area, surrounded by hills, and an incredible waterfall in a huge red rock. It takes around 3 - 4 hours to visit the whole area. Entrance fee is 90 Yuan. If you want to take carts, it costs 25 Yuan more in both directions (May, 2016).
Another large scenic area leads you to one of the biggest waterfalls in China (76 meters high). It takes about one hour of walking through an incredible scenic area (passing by smaller waterfalls) to reach the great Chishui falls. Entrance fee to this place is also 90 Yuan plus 25 Yuan more if you want to take the carts.
Besides these two outstanding danxia rock formations, there are at least ten more places to visit in the area, in case you have time.
Between eastern and western sectors (about 40 kilometers distance), on the middle of the road, there's a charming ancient town, built on the rocks across the river. Besides authentic wooden houses, the town has some history left from the first Red Army and an interesting exhibition museum. Town entrance: 20 Yuan.
National park in the western sector, before Chishui great falls.
Danxia red rock formations in the river. Off the beaten path in the western sector (not many people go there as the road is bad).
Datong is a village as we like them in China because of its "local color". Nothing seems to have changed, people have forgotten time. We walk there without meeting too much tourists along the quiet streets lined with low houses. We can also visit a small distillery of sorghum alcohol. The Chinese national alcohol (free). Entrance fee is 20 Yuan. (https://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/07/b3/4c/83/datong-ancient-town-chishui.jpg)
