Chillán is in Central Chile, about 405 km south of Santiago de Chile.


Chillán is famed for regional specialties (such as "Longanizas de Chillán", a type of sausage), the Termas de Chillán which are 82 km east of Chillán, and being the birthplace of Chile's founder Bernardo O'Higgins.

By bus[edit]

Chillán is easily accessible by bus from many cities/towns throughout Chile. There are many bus companies in Chile, so lookup which serve your outbound location. You can buy bus tickets online at, the prices are the same as the ticket office if you have a Chilean card or at a slightly higher price in US Dollars via PayPal for international cards.

From Santiago de Chile there are many regularly scheduled services throughout the day and overnight. The trip takes around 5 hours, depending on the service.

By train[edit]

TrenCentral offer service from Estación Central (Alameda station) in Santiago de Chile to Chillán (final stop). The trip takes 4 hours and 40 minutes, with 10 stops in between. Prices range from $4.860 CLP to $12.000 CLP for the standard cabin, and $19.100 CLP to $24.300 CLP for the premium cabin. There's also a windowless cabin at a standard price of $5.700 CLP. You can purchase tickets online: TrenCentral (international cards accepted) or (slightly higher price charged in US Dollars via PayPal for international cards)

By car[edit]

Chillán is right along the Ruta 5, Chile's main highway, a modern well-maintained toll road with a 120kph speed limit which is part of the Pan-American Highway system.

From Santiago de Chile it's a 5 hour drive along Ruta 5.

By plane[edit]

The closest airport to Chillán is Concepción's Aeropuerto Carriel Sur, or simply Aeropuerto de Concepción((IATA: CCP) (ICAO: SCIE). The national airport offers flights between select cities in Chile. The airport is 100 km west of Chillán, and roughly an hour drive along the Autopista Del Itata/Ruta 152 toll road. There are also many bus services from Concepcion to Chillán.

Escuela de México, a primary school with famous murals painted by Mexican artist David Alfara Siqueiros and Xavier Guerrerro. The murals are named Muerte al Invasor (Death to the Invader) and De México a Chile (From Mexico to Chile). The former is a combination of Cubist and Impressionist styles and alludes to the struggles for independence, and the latter has a Realist style and depicts many scenes of Mexican and Chilean people. Hours: Monday - Friday: 10am - 1pm & 3-6pm. Saturday: 8am - 6pm. Sunday: 8am - 2pm.

Visit Mercado de Chillán, Chillán's indoor food market where you can find the fame regional specialties of Chillán and other Chilean staples. Hours: Monday - Friday: 8am - 7pm. Saturday & Sunday: 10am - 6pm

Visit Viejo Chillán, the old city center before the city was relocated. There's an expansive stone mural on the main plaza, next to Chile's founder ancestral home. They also have the remains of Bernardo O'Higgins and his mother.
