Monastery of S. Miguel de Refojos.

Cabeceiras de Basto [4] is a Portuguese town of about 4400 inhabitants in the Minho. Located in a valley surrounded by mountains in the heart of the Terras de Basto by the River Tamega, is known by the Monastery of San Miguel de Refojos de Basto, an important pilgrimage center in the Middle Ages.

It can be concluded that Cabeceiras de Basto dates back to BC because of the existence of dolmens and some Celtic ruins around. Also in Roman times there was a settlement in this place, as evidenced by the existence of a vestal temple on the outskirts of the town and by the finding of ceramic objects, statues, etc.

The name of the town probably comes from Bastos, people who coming from Andalusia, passed through this region and here founded a city called Basto, near the Monastery of Santa Senhorinha in the year 711.

Cabeceiras de Basto has always been a land of great prosperity, as evidenced by the Monastery of S. Miguel de Refojos, which was the richest of Minho, but only in 1514 is when Manuel I creates the county. It was also an important center of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages.
