Brändö

Default Banner.jpg

Brändö is a municipality and a group of islands in the province of Åland, Finland.

Understand[edit]

Brändö islands are located north east from the main island of Åland, quite close to the Finnish mainland. The islands are located on a popular route from Finland to mainland Åland and the proximity of mainland Finland makes them a relatively easy destination for an archipelago trip.

There are about 450 permanent residents living on these islands. Due to their remote location Brändö islands are probably the last part of Åland archipelago being permanently inhabited. The earliest mention about Brändö is from the 16th century as a part of the Kumlinge parish.

Jurmo island is one of the major attractions in Brändö. Notice that there is another attractive island called Jurmo located in Turku archipelago.

Regions[edit]

Brändö consists of the villages Lappo, Asterholma, Torsholma, Baggholma, Brändö by, Björnholma, Korsö, Fiskö, Åva and Jurmo.

Villages Lappo, Asterholma and Jurmo are located on separate islands and visiting them requires another ferry trip.

Talk[edit]

The municipality is unilingually Swedish speaking.

Get in[edit]

You can reach Brändö only by a ferry or by your own boat. Place for a car must be pre-booked to the ferries operated by Ålandstrafiken.

Ålandstrafiken: Norra linjen[edit]

Ferries operated by Ålandstrafiken[4] serves the Northern Line from Osnäs/Vuosnainen in Kustavi in the Finnish Mainland to the village of Åva (M/S Viggen) and from Hummelvik in Vårdö on the main island of Åland (M/S Alfågeln) to Lappo and to Torsholma. Both connections are operated several times a day. Ålandstrafiken is free of charge only for passengers. Bicycles, cars and motorbikes are subject to a fee.

Vuosnainen ferry jetty is accessible from Turku by bus at the weekends once a day.

Ferentes: the Houtskari route[edit]

There is a ferry connection by Ferentes[5] from Houtskär/Houtskari (mainland Finland) islands to Torsholma (M/S Karolina) jetty. The ferry has a timetable but visits some of the islands only by request. From Houtskari you need to call it by phone at least one day in advance. Phone to the vessel is +358 40 717 3455. As the vessel is small, remember to tell if you have a bicycle with you. M/S Karolina is free of charge.

Get around[edit]

Most of the major Brändö islands are connected to each other by bridges or causeways. To reach the separate islands there are smaller ferries. See the timetables between Åva-Jurmo and Torsholma-Lappo-Asterholma. Note that some arrivals need to be booked in advance.
