  • Donsol is considered the whale shark capital of the world and is said to have the largest number of sightings of these gentle giants anywhere in the world. Unlike in other countries, these creatures are seen all-year round and are in groups. The only limitation is that they hide when there is a typhoon when the waves would also hamper any snorkeling interaction.

Other Eco-tourism includes firefly watching where you see fireflies gather and cover whole trees in the mangroves. Scuba diving is also available by going to the Manta Bowl in nearby Ticao where manta rays and whale sharks are seen regularly.

  • Donsol is the most convenient place to stay if you plan to interact with the whalesharks, visit Mayon Volcano and other ecotourism places in Bicol.
  • Gubat is an up and coming surf area. Lola Sayong Surf Camp is located on Gubat Bay. They have simple Nipa huts and friendly locals. From Legazpi just take a minivan to Sorsogon (2 hours, 90 pesos)then a jeepney to Gubat ( 40 minutes, 29 pesos) Once in Gubat, you can take a tricycle to Lola Sayong Surf camp. Surf board rentals are 200 pesos/hour, 500 pesos for half day, and 800 for full day. Lessons available as well. It's a perfect laid back, uncrowded surf spot, great for beginners and experienced surfers as there are reef and sand breaks.
