Berau is in East Kalimantan.
The town Tanjung Redeb commonly called by tourists as Berau. It is mostly used as a transit hub for tourists visiting Derawan, Maratua, Biduk-biduk or Merabu Village. The town thrives on coal mining industry. The Segah river in Tanjung Redeb provides the lifeline to the town where coal ore are transported in barges and pulled tug boats.
Berau region despite being known by industrial activities especially coal mining and extensive palm oil plantations, hold and extremely high potential of Marine Biodiversity. The study carried by Marine Conservation Agency found, that the area holds the second highest diversity of coral reefs in Indonesia after Raja Ampat and the third in the world. The ecosystem covers coral reef, mangrove forest and sea grass. As a result, Berau Marine Conservation Area was formed in 2005 which covers 1,321 million hectares area between Pulau Panjang (Long Island), Karangtigau Cape, and Baliktaba Reef.
Kalimarau Airport also known as Berau Airport services Berau Region. It is located about 10km from the city center. There are at least 10 flights daily to Balikpapan.
There is no public transport in the town. Private taxi drivers are operating in the area. Ask your hotel to organise transport for you. Alternatively, some hotels and guesthouses will have a motorbike for rent at a 50 000 IDR per day.
The street alongside the river at night transforms into a street stalls avenue where a lot of people enjoying local food and juice drinks. Otherwise there is a lot of Indonesian food places (Warung). It is difficult to find other than Indonesian food restaurants in the area.
There are plenty of hotels ranging from cheap guesthouses to exclusive hotels.
Regarding buses Berau to either Sangatta or to Samarinda (September 2019). From the ticket office at the bus Terminal in Berau, there are no direct buses Berau to Sangatta, and there are no direct buses Berau to Samarinda. Shared taxis (Travel) seems to be the option. Berau to Nunukan. Berau to Tarakan. From the Berau Bus Terminal Rinding (on Jalan Marsma Iswahyudi, near the junction of Jalan H.A.R.M. Ayoeb), a bus departs each day at 09:00 (Not sure about Sundays or Public Holidays). This bus will take you to the ferry terminal at Tanjung Selor. Arrival time at Tanjung Selor is around 12:30 to 12:45. Cost is 50,000 Idr. There is a fast boat to Nunukan scheduled to depart Tanjung Selor at around 13:15. Cost is 330,000 Idr. And depending on the weather, will take about three and a half hours. Fast boats also leave from here to go to Tarakan, but not sure of either timings or costs. (From the main road, the Bus Terminal Rinding has the appearance of a military compound). The fast boat does not dock at the main ferry terminal (Nunukan to Tawau terminal - Terminal Penumpang), but a a small terminal about three kilometers from it.
