Batutumonga is in Tana Toraja.
Batutumonga is a beautiful village that is situated 18km from Rantepao.
It's a convenient starting point if you want to explore the area north of Rantepao. There are a few basic accommodation options to spend the night.
Easily reached by public transport. Catch a bemo at the main road in Rantepao to go to Bolu (5.000,-) and from there to Batutumonga (20.000,-).
Gunung Sesean. Hike up to the summit of Gunung Sesean, the highest mountain in the region, which takes around 1.5 hours. The trail starts in Batutumonga and is easy to find. No guide required, nor did anyone approach me. The trail is a little bit steep at times, but it doesn't take any climbing skills to reach the summit. Roundtrip from/to Batutumonga 6km.
Village trek to Tikkala. It's an easy 12km trek that takes around 3 hours. First stop is Lokomata, a tiny village located 3km further. There you can see the traditional graves in a huge rock which is located right next to the road. I passed by an ticket office, I assume they usually charge an entrance fee of 20.000,- The second stop are the hanging Graves in Pana. To get there backtrack your way 2km the same road until you spot an unmarked trail leading downhill on the right handside, see GPS The graves are well marked, you might be asked to pay an entrance fee of 20.000,- Finally, follow the road to reach Tikala from where you can catch a bemo or bentor to Rantepao. There are few signs along the way, just keep asking along the way and you won't get lost. People hardly speak any English, but they will point you towards the right direction.
There are only a few basic accommodation options which don't require a reservation, at least in low season:
Mama Rina's Homestay. 150.000.- per person incl breakfast, dinner and traditional private bathroom
Mama Yos Homestay. 125.000,- per person incl breakfast and dinner
