Banyumas is a small sleepy historical town in Central Java. It was the first capital of Banyumas regency. It is approximately located 20 km southeast of Purwokerto, and 12 km south of Sokaraja. Although distance from Purwokerto is not too far, Banyumas is 180 degrees different from Purwokerto's hustle and bustle. It is very sleepy and little bit deserted. It is also offers the harmonious mix between traditional Javanese houses and Dutch-style buildings. For historical-sightseeing lovers, this town is recommendable for a visit.
The nearest bus station is in Purwokerto. Some of buses passes Banyumas, especially for those who heads to Yogyakarta, Solo, and other southern Javanese cities from Purwokerto. The Efisiensi Bus, which serves routes from Purwokerto to Yogyakarta (or vice versa) always passes Banyumas.
Purwokerto Railway Station serves as a main railway hub in the region. There are many of trains from major cities such as Jakarta, Cirebon, Yogyakarta, Solo, and Surabaya passes Purwokerto. From the railway staion, go by the road to Banyumas.
Traditional three-wheeled pedal-powered carts known as becak can be found in most part of Banyumas, especially in Alun-Alun (town square) and the market.
Entering Banyumas will feel as we were on 1940s or 1950s. Banyumas has plenty of historical buildings that worth a visit.
