Baiyu is a small Tibetan town in Ganzi Autonomous Prefecture, very close to the border of Tibet Autonomous Region. It is a gateway to the historical hillside monasteries of Dzongsar and Katok, with an altitude close to 5000m.

Yarchen Gar
  • Yarchen Gar - (Tibetan: ཡ་ཆེན་སྒར་, Chinese pinyin: Yaqing si) Second largest Tibetan Buddhist institute in the world, having about 10,000 monks and nuns living in self-built wooden houses. Men are not allowed to enter on nun's side of the river. It's in an isolated valley 2 hours drive to the east of Baiyu town.
  • Katok monastery - One of the six important monasteries of Nyingma school of Tibetan buddhism, situated on the hill about 40 km from the town of Baiyu
  • Dzongsar monastery - Historic monastery found in 13th century on the hill between the towns of Dege and Baiyu. Possible to be reached by car, or about 10 hours of trekking.
