Arcot is well served by land transport, both bus and railways, although there is no railway to Arcot itself.
Arcot is 70 miles south of Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu. Arcot is situated on the National Highway which connects Chennai and Bangalore. Hence it is well connected by buses to the State Capital and the IT Capital of India. In addition, many buses ply to/from Arcot to the important cities in Tamil Nadu, such as Kancheepuram, Coimbatore, Salem, Erode, Chidambaram and Thanjavur.
Inter-state buses to Chittoor, Tirupati (the famous Hindu shrine), Mysore and Pondicherry also run from Arcot.
The nearest major Railway station to Arcot is Katpadi, which is a Junction in the Southern Railways. Almost all trains which run from Chennai to the other Southern cities (in-state and inter-state) go through Katpadi Station. Also, the trains running from Cochin, Mangalore, Coimbatore etc to the Northern States also run through Katpadi. Hence, it is quite easy to reach Arcot by either road or rail.
There are two main nearby towns, Walajapet and Ranipet. The River Palar separates Arcot from Walajapet and Ranipet. Ranipet is famous for BHEL and Walajapet is famous for Jaundice Medicine. A nearby railway station is located at Walajah Road and it is very useful for the passengers traveling to Chennai, Bangalore, Coimbatore and parts of Kerala.
