Amnat Charoen is a City in Isaan (North East Thailand), and the Capital City of the Province of this name. It is pronounced "Am-nart Ja-rern" in Thai.

Although it is a small and tranquil town, Amnat Charoen has various attractions. Visitors to Amnat Charoen can stroll around to see sacred Buddha images, picturesque rice paddies, and fruit orchards, rocky rapids of the Mekong River in dry season, and excellent handicrafts, particularly silk.

From Bangkok, head north via Hwy 1, then Hwy 2 to Nakhon Ratchasima. After that take Hwy 226, Nakhon Ratchasima-Surin, then Hwy 214, Surin-Amphoe Suwannaphum, turn right onto Hwy 202 via Yasothon and Amphoe Pa tio to Amnat Charoen. This route is 585 km. Or motorists can take Hwy 1, Hwy 2, then Hwy 226, Nakhon Ratchasima-Ubon Ratchathani, and Hwy 212 to Amnat Charoen. This route is 704 km.

By bus[edit]

Scheduled buses and air-conditioned coaches leave Northeastern Bus terminal Mo Chit 2, Kamphaeng Phet Rd, for Amnat Charoen daily.

Tourists who travel by plane or train can head for Ubon Ratchathani first, then take bus to Amnat Charoen, 75 km away.

There are local buses or minibuses every hour or so from nearby towns such as Mukdahan and Yasothon.

Amnat Charoen's remote bus terminal is several kilometres north of the centre, off Highway 212 towards Mukdahan. Motorbike taxis go from the terminal to the town centre for around 60 baht, or try to board or leave your bus when it passes through the centre. There is only one big 4 way intersection in this City, so get off close to here.

White minibuses to Ubon Ratchathani leave from a more convenient stop on the east side of Highway 212 a short distance south of its intersection with Highway 202 (the main crossroads in the town centre).

Get around[edit]

There are plenty of motorcycle taxis here, and also several tuktuks. These latter tend to hang around the market close to the 4 way main intersection in the City.

As you come into the City there is only one large four way intersection and it has traffic lights. This is the Clocktower one, and the Clocktower is a little difficult to spot as it is to the left as you reach the intersection.

As you stand here and look to the north (towards Mukdahan and away from Ubon) -

-To the left is the main shopping strip on the other side of the intersection. The markets are here, up the streets to the right hand side as well as the only (apparent) internet cafe in the City which is on this road. About a kilometre along is the Faikit (or Faikid) Hotel.

-Directly ahead is the bus station several kilometres distant, with very little in the area at all.

-To the right about two hundred metres on the left hand side is a 7-11,with the Prince Hotel a couple of hundred metres further on the same side. Another 200 metres on the opposite side is the Mansion Hotel (written in Thai), and another 100 metres along on the left is the L J Emerald Hotel (also written in Thai) and is next to a Suzuki dealer.

There are not many restaurants so you will need to walk around to find one.

Eat[edit][add listing]

There are restaurants around the place, but the menus are totally in Thai - few tourists ever come here. There are also street eats near the market, but no tables to sit and eat were noticed. There is a reasonable restaurant some 300 metres from the intersection to the right, on the right hand side. Everything is in Thai, but the lady is very helpful. They also have beer if you want this. This place is quite cheap!

Since you may find that some of the hotels do not have a restaurant if you want breakfast, you have two options. There are cooked snacks available at the 7-11, or close to the four way intersection there are a couple of restaurants open in the morning.

Sleep[edit][add listing]

  • Prince Hotel - Is in Aruprasert road, which is the right hand road from the four way intersection.

It is about 400 metres along on the left hand side. The hotel sign is in English. It advertises rooms at B350, and from the outside, there are aircon rooms. Phone is 045511251, 0967893639.

  • Mansion Hotel - is in Aruprasert Road about 600 metres along on the right hand side. The hotel sign is in Thai,(แมนชัน) and the hotel is up a laneway. It advertises rooms from B300 to B2500 (fan rooms), and B350 to B3500) aircon rooms. Phone 0901815488.
  • L J Emerald Hotel - is in Aruprasert Road, about 800 metres along from the 4 way intersection,on the left hand side. There is a Suzuki dealer immediately before the hotel. The hotel sign is in Thai- โรงแรมแอลเจ - which translates as "Hotel L J".

This place is actually quite good. It is reasonably modern, very clean with aircon, hot water, multichannel TV and barfridge. No English is spoken, but they are very friendly. A decent aircon room will cost B350, which is ridiculously cheap! There is no operating restaurant here, so head back up the road to the 7-11 or the intersection to eat!

  • Faikid Hotel(โรงแรมไฝ้ยขิด). This hotel is probably the upmarket one in the City. 449 M.12 Samranrad Arunprasert Road. It is to the left of the 4 way intersection, and about one Km along on the left hand side. It advertises rooms from B450 to B1300, including breakfast.

Get out[edit]

  • Ubon These go regularly from either the bus station, or from close to the four way intersection about 200 metres back towards Ubon.
