Akhmeta is a small village in the Kakheti region.
- hire a taxi (literally five minutes) to the first of 5/6 villages which have merged along the main road in one continous linear settlement- the largest is Duisi. It is completely safe, if anything the place is slightly dull. If you plan on staying overnight then try and organise in advance. The hills and river are beautiful in the summer, the people nice (if surprised to see you) the food is bland and heavy. Beyond the last village, it just gets progressively more mountainous and there are no roads- just a few farmers for about 70/80 km until you hit the Russian border to the North. Its really just a quirk of history, a long day trip is sufficient to answer all your questions.
