Wikitravel:Abbreviations
In the body text of articles, the first occurrence of a term to be abbreviated should be spelt out in full with the abbreviation to be used in the rest of the article following immediately afterwards in parentheses. ContentsIn prose, do not use an ampersand (&) instead of spelling out "and" in full. Using abbreviations is especially encouraged in listings. Editors may want to choose the appropriate abbreviation from those below which are both widely understood and unambiguous. However, don't knock yourself out "correcting" Rt to Rte - there is more important work to be done in plunging forward and writing an up-to-date and accurate free Travel Guide!

Geographical[edit]
In body text, compass points start with a lower case letter if you're talking about a direction eg: "go north three blocks) but capitalized if talking about a region eg: "in the South you can find great seafood") (but not when just describing an area eg: "motels are concentrated north of Dunedin"). Addresses[edit]Especially in listings, we prefer to abbreviate street types. Use Rd instead of Road, St instead of Street, and so forth. Leave out any full stop after the abbreviation.
Buildings[edit]
US routes[edit]Numbered highways in the US may be abbreviated like the following examples:
