The Travellers' pub - your watering hole on Wikitravel

The Travellers' pub is where Wikitravellers of all languages get to together to talk about Wikitravel, and where you can ask for help if you're confused, lost, afraid, tired or annoyed by Wikitravel. Please check the FAQ and Help page before asking a question, though, since that may save your time and others'.

If you have question about travel, not the website, try the Wikitravel Extra Forum.

If you are having a problem that you think has to do with the Mediawiki software, please post that on the technical requests page instead.

Please add new questions at the bottom of the page and sign your post by appending four tildes (~~~~) to it, but otherwise plunge forward!

ja: bug report along with the system maintenance held in the end of this March

Hi IB techs, a bug report from ja:.

(Probably) along with your system maintenance held at the end of this March, we have some malfunctioning on the ja: pages as listed below:

When we edit and browse the ja: pages under the log in status:

  • The page index at the top left of the pages does not display (when we browse the pages under the log out status, that function (i.e. display the index) is totally no problem).
  • The "months" index, usually displays at the bottom of each sub page of 祭やイベント (events and festivals) (by using {{Month}} tug) does not display (ditto).
  • Tugs at the top of the user preferences page are unusable (so far the page is fixed at the "user profile" tug, and we cannot change the pages even if we click the other tugs).
  • For admin users, part of the collective patrol functions seem to be disabled (we can check and patrol some previous edits at one time, but we cannot display each edit one by one, even if we want to).

When we browse the ja: pages regardless of log in or log out status:

  • "Related pages" (the function for displaying the related pages on the sidebar, by using the {{Related}} tug) is malfunctioned.

Also, here is a resubmit request, the bug on ja: Wikitravel Mobile Version once reported by 木更津乃風.

We think some of the vital functions are disabled so far, which cause us very much inconvenience when we want to edit and browse ja: pages.

We are very happy if you could check the system and fix them as soon as possible.--Shoestring (talk) 11:06, 20 April 2013 (EDT)

Shoestring, thanks so much! I reported all the bugs to our IT department. I will keep you posted how things are going. Thank you so much! Warm regards, IBAlex (talk) 13:55, 23 April 2013 (EDT)
Dear Shoestring, we are trying now to fix all the bugs you mentioned. Could you please provide some screenshots that could help us with solving the problem. Thank you very much for your cooperation! Warm regards, IBAlex (talk) 13:39, 26 April 2013 (EDT)
Hi Alex, thank you very much for your response and sorry for not to give you any reply soon (I had no chance to check the pages for a couple of days).
I checked ja: pages concerning the requests I gave you the other days, and umm...it seems so far that nothing has changed yet.--Shoestring (talk) 10:33, 28 April 2013 (EDT)
Shoestring, thank you for your response. We are still working to fix those bugs and we would appreciate some of your help. Could you please send us screenshots with the issues, with log in status and log out status,together with the page links. We would need screenshots and links for the following issues:
  1. The page index at the top left of the pages;
  2. The "months" index;
  3. Tugs at the top of the user preferences page;
  4. collective patrol functions, admin users;
  5. Related pages on the sidebar;
Looking forward to your answer! Thank you! Warm regards, IBAlex (talk) 13:09, 29 April 2013 (EDT)

Hi Alex, I apologize for my delayed response. I went to Southeast Asia last week.

In regard to your request, I uploaded screenshots as follows:

Request "No. 4" seems recovered, so I don’t upload the shot this time. Your cooperation would be very much helpful.--Shoestring (talk) 00:15, 12 May 2013 (EDT)

Respect

There is a big mistake about Topic - Respect.

I am a frequent traveller to Kuala Lumpur, and I have a lots of friends being the members of Barisan National. I don't see there is any "danger" to stay along with them. Obviously, the message in "Respect" is composed by the opposition party with disrespect and bias.

In a travel advising website, accusing a political party is completely unrelated to tourist. I urge this website to correct it ASAP and gives the international traveller a true, fair comment about Malaysia's political environment. —The preceding comment was added by 223.16.199.154 (talkcontribs)

223.16.199.154, thank you for this message! Please know that Wikitravel is a guide written by the Travelers for the Travelers. Anybody can edit Wikitravel and add their own information as long as it meets our policies. Feel free to plunge forward and edit Kuala Lumpur page on your own. Here is a Quick Contribution Guide that can help you with that. Happy editing! Warm regards, IBAlex (talk) 13:27, 6 May 2013 (EDT)

Getting OpenID back

Is there any chance that the OpenID log-in will be enabled again? I seem to have lost access to my account, because I have used the method and without registering password and email. (ok, it could have been months since it was disabled - I'm an infrequent user) --27.253.199.217 11:16, 8 May 2013 (EDT)

I don't believe it was possible to register via OpenID in the past, which is why it was disabled. What is your username? You may want to simply register a new account.--IBobi talk email 13:30, 8 May 2013 (EDT)
It's no huge loss but does looks very amateurish to disable it and then have it still mentioned on the log-in pages.
Has all technical development now ceased?

It would be good to provide a map for each travel site described.

Listing on Australia page

This business closed six years ago. It should be removed from the Wiki Travel Australia website. My wife and I owned and set it up and ran it for six years. The property now appears to be run as a holiday house to let under the name Blue Water House. It is not the same business.

Which business are we talking about? Caould you please provide some details? Thank you, IBAlex (talk) 14:13, 3 June 2013 (EDT)

Abuse on Johannesburg page

I noticed what appears to be spam in the Johannesburg page. I have no knowledge of this location, it just seems obvious! It appears at the very end of the "See"section. This is a copy of the text in question: Janine, Parkmore, Sandton, ☎ 0726218581, [33]. Save up to 50% on Shuttle Services, Taxi and Cab Services, Limo Hire and Party Bus Hire. Hundreds of Companies compete for your business on MyRide edit 24.108.16.122 05:00, 3 June 2013 (EDT)

Dear 24.108.16.122, thank you for letting us know! We appreciate your help! I have just removed this spam information. Obviously, Shuttle Services don't belong to section "See".
Just to let you know, it is a good idea to create your own account on Wikitravel because it will give you various benefits:
  1. Ability to communicate with other writers about your edits and travel tips
  2. Ability to turn off advertising in your Account Settings
  3. Credit for your travel writing/edits, which will be attributed to you rather than just an IP address
  4. Your contributions will be more trusted as you become familiar to other Wikitravelers
  5. No need to pass recaptcha test
All the best, IBAlex (talk) 14:10, 3 June 2013 (EDT)

Please fix your problem in introduction! -VANK, a non-governmental organization of Korea-

Hello, my name is Park Ha-eun, and I am a student of Dokjeong elementary school in South Korea. I am a member of VANK, which is an abbreviation of Voluntary Agency Network of Korea. VANK is a non-governmental organization, and we take a great effort to solve history distortions or wrong image of Korea.

We found out that your picture in the introduction about Japan has a slight mistake. The body of water between Korea and Japan has been marked as "Sea of Japan". However, evidently, "Sea of Japan" is not a correct name at all. It has been called as "Sea of Japan" since Korea has been Japan's colony. But, now we are a independent country as Korea, and the exact name is "East Sea".

Additionally, the worldwide mapmaker, National Geographics, and the travel guidebook, Lonely Planet Publication, has promised us to use the name "East Sea" as well. We would be delightful if you mark our sea as both of the names, "Sea of Japan" and "East Sea". Thank you for reading and we would appreciate your favorable consideration. We would be grateful for your explanation as to why you chose to use ‘Sea of Japan’. Please email us at haeunpark@naver.com.

Sincerely, Park Ha-eun

Hello, I have several months trying to add a hotel to the list of hotels in Taganga ads (Santa Marta, Colombia) can you tell me what to do to make the ad remains on the list, thanks.

—The preceding comment was added by User:190.68.143.52 (talkcontribs)

Hello there. Well first of all listings as well call them in Wikitravel can not be promotional aka in the interest of the business owner, but need to be for the interest of the travelers. Secondly in the listings we do not use first person pronouns (I, You, We, Us and so on) as User:IBAlex stated in her summary in the history of page edits on the Taganga page. Please comment underneath here if something remains unclear. Lastly you could create a user so we can communicate better, you'll get your own shiny space to edit and for people to talk to you! --OVK (talk) 13:01, 7 July 2013 (EDT)

Houston 1940 Air Terminal Museum

I am a new contributor to Wikitravel. I made a recent addition i.e., the 1940 Air Terminal Museum in Houston, Texas. I made at least two errors, but don't know how to correct them.

1) I placed the article under the "Buy" section and it should be moved to the "Do" section.

2) The link to the museum web site, www.1940airterminal.org does not work.

Can anyone help me correct those errors?

Thanks —The preceding comment was added by User:99.45.100.108 (talkcontribs)

Thank you for you message! Everything should be ok now, please have a look. If you would like to add/ change information within the article, please click on Edit at the top right corner of each article (next to "Read" and "View History"). That's what I did to move your listing from section "Buy" to section "Do". The URL didn't work because it was missing "http://". I hope that now everything is clear. Please let me know if you have any more questions. Thank you for your contributions on Wikitravel! Please keep it up! Cheers! IBAlex (talk) 15:08, 8 July 2013 (EDT)

/* Cities */ Elko is in Northern Nevada

Elko, NV was listed as being in Southern Nevada. I deleted that, and it's also under Northern Nevada, where it belongs, but the top of the article still puts it under Southern Nevada. Can someone correct this. —The preceding comment was added by 67.118.51.31 (talkcontribs)

Malaysia page filled with racist and irrelevant information....

I like to read articles for balanced information. Unfortunately, the article on Malaysia has some paragraphs on Malaysia being a "shithole," with many derogatory comments about Muslims, including that they "breed 8-15 f**kt***ds" etc..... Seeing this interferes with my ability to enjoy reading the article, but I do not have an account. If someone could do something about this, that would be great. Furthermore, I wish to add that such comments do not belong on wikitravel, and I think they should be removed. —The preceding comment was added by 118.99.133.149 (talkcontribs)

Right or wrong uploads

I did upload several pictures by other authors and everything seems correct to me, but i have some doubts regarding few of them. So in order to save my time and time of others i would not want to wait until somebody will notice inaccuracies when everything is "too late". Can i ask to check my uploads and tell whether they are right (and therefore can be used on Wikitravel) or they are not appropriate and can't be used as illustrations on Wikitravel pages? I don't see where else i could ask such almost personal question. The problem is with people in the photos - i have read carefully everything what has been said in this respect and generally everything is clear and comprehensible. Still i have no competence to decide what kind of "crowd in public spaces" is suitable for Wikitravel, where is a line when people are already "peripheral to the picture content" and when they "are not peripheral enough" to be suitable for use of the photo on Wikitravel. In other words i need only clear instruction which pictures can't be used, no explanations are needed. The pictures are these: first, second, third.

One more similar question: if the "crowd" is in public space and all people are only performers and spectators, all are identifiable and not "peripheral to the picture content" because they are the content itself - what then? Not a crowd in a market or so, but a certain performance where everybody (both performers and spectators) are willing to be in the limelight, and the photo serves as an illustration of the certain event that travelers are more than welcome, and they of course would know that they can be photographed or filmed (by private person or TV) too. Such an informative picture of the crowd, non of the people predominates, no one plays to the camera. Yes or no?

It may be that in the future i'll have same question about other photos with other people - can i ask it again (then where) or should i not disturb? --Kazys (talk) 13:16, 25 July 2013 (EDT)

Kazys, thank you for your message! I'm happy you asked this question and I will gladly help you! Exactly as you said: identifiable people in a picture should be peripheral to the picture content. That's why all the pictures you uploaded are good as their main purpose is to show buildings, attractions and or city's infrastructure. People are just peripheral.
Your second question is more difficult. I would say that pictures that show crowd attending a public event or festival are fine. We do have exceptions for photos that show a particular sports or activities or crowd scenes or illustrating some costume or uniform. I saw many pictures like that, for example: here and here. That's why I would say that you are fine if you upload a picture that illustrates a certain event that would be of a traveler's interest. I would love to see those pictures. Maybe we can feature them on our Events News page? Thank you for all the pictures you have already uploaded! Great job! Please keep it up. If you need any help you can always write a message here on the traveler's Pub or contact me directly via my talk Page. Warm regards, IBAlex (talk) 13:52, 25 July 2013 (EDT)
Thanks for the answers. I'll contact you directly via your Talk Page. --Kazys (talk) 02:53, 26 July 2013 (EDT)
