The Travellers' pub - your watering hole on Wikitravel

The Travellers' pub is where Wikitravellers of all languages get to together to talk about Wikitravel, and where you can ask for help if you're confused, lost, afraid, tired or annoyed by Wikitravel. Please check the FAQ and Help page before asking a question, though, since that may save your time and others'.

If you have question about travel, not the website, try the Wikitravel Extra Forum.

If you are having a problem that you think has to do with the Mediawiki software, please post that on the technical requests page instead.

Please add new questions at the bottom of the page and sign your post by appending four tildes (~~~~) to it, but otherwise plunge forward!

Admin on Arabic Wikitravel

I have been doing some work on the Arabic Wikitravel, which is only starting out with a small number of pages, such as: ar:أفريقيا. It would help if I could delete pages and do other such maintenance tasks, so I am requesting admin tools. For example, there is some spam to delete: [1] I have been an admin for a while on English Wikipedia, so know what I'm doing. On English Wikitravel, I'm editing pages about Egypt. Aude 23:32, 25 September 2008 (EDT)

I think that would be helpful, I commented on Arabic Wikitravel Expedition, JuCo, can you make this happen, and then re-enable anon edits for AR since someone will keep an eye on it now? thanks! – cacahuate talk 12:33, 26 September 2008 (EDT)
Aude is ready to go. We moved servers today and weren't able to re-enable the anon edits but will do that in the coming days. Thank you! JuCo 20:29, 26 September 2008 (EDT)
Thank you for setting my user rights. I got rid of the spam and will keep monitoring changes. Aude 20:48, 26 September 2008 (EDT)

We've re-enabled anon edits on AR. Thank you, Aude! JuCo 12:52, 29 September 2008 (EDT)

Burocrat on wt:nl?

Is there an active bureaucrat on the Dutch Wikitravel? --Rein N. 01:31, 8 October 2008 (EDT)

No, you might want to ask User:KevinSours to take care of whatever needs taking care of. If someone on :nl has been selected to be a bureaucrat, he can take care of that for you too. --Peter Talk 16:48, 9 October 2008 (EDT)
Actually if you can address issues to User:JuCo or User:Khoerling it would be better. My time is being taken up with other projects right now and I may not see things addressed to me on the site promptly. KevinSours 18:11, 9 October 2008 (EDT)
I've nominated you for the task Rein, please see Wikitravel Shared:Administrator nominationscacahuate talk 00:14, 11 October 2008 (EDT)

Hola, can you have a look at #Thumbnail shows up as gray box above Tech:New server bugs, and let us know what can be done... this still hasn't been resolved, it's quite an important issue... thanks! – cacahuate talk 12:34, 11 October 2008 (EDT)

US Maps

I just ran across this Public Domain source of US Maps: http://nationalatlas.gov/printable/fedlands.html Specifically, Federal lands (parks and military bases) divided by states. Small images available in GIF format, larger ones in PDF format. Help yourselves. Gamweb 17:33, 10 October 2008 (EDT)

Thanks for that. I used that source for my Colorado map and then forgot about the source! --Peter Talk 14:32, 11 October 2008 (EDT)

bugs and feature requests

Can everyone who cares take a moment and glance through the open bugs and feature requests, some are quite old and, while shamefully neglected by those who have the power to fix them, may well have fixed themselves in the last year or two. Let's all help to keep the list as short and tight as possible, making it even easier and more alluring for IB to fix the real issues. I also propose re-merging the "backburner" ones into the regular category, or they'll never get fixed – cacahuate talk 04:38, 14 October 2008 (EDT)

Ok, I remerged the backburner bugs and closed a bunch more, any help with sorting out the feature requests would be much appreciated – cacahuate talk 02:52, 26 October 2008 (EDT)

Help with Image

Could some experienced users take a look at this image [4] and help make it work? maybe move it to Norrebrogade.jpg instead or something, as the issue might be with the "ø"?

It does seem to me like it's the ø causing problems, although I don't know why that would be. We do not have a tool for moving images; I would recommend that you reupload the file to Norrebrogade.jpg. --Peter Talk 21:28, 18 October 2008 (EDT)
The char '&' is also unusable in an image name. See 'Image:State&Main.jpg" for example. Opening this file results in opening opening "Image:State". --Rein N. 03:49, 20 October 2008 (EDT)

Feature request

I just wanted to moot this before i made a tech request. How would people feel about adding a link to English Wikitravel in the navigation box - I know it may be a bit ethnocentric, but I can say this with clean consience, since i'm not a native speaker :) The overwhealming majority of traffic seem to be stemming from the English version, so I really think it can be justified, as long as the link is not just called Wikitravel, but Wikitravel:en or something. Sertmann 22:15, 22 October 2008 (EDT)

Well, we already have links in the "other languages" box on this page for example, and in recentchanges there's links to all language versions. I feel like we have enough links already in the navigation box, and even though English is the largest version, I think it's biased to only add that one – cacahuate talk 01:56, 23 October 2008 (EDT)
How about adding a link to http://wikitravel.org/ ? It's the same way as "Wikitravel Main Page" link in the Extra's navigation box. I can back to ja: by that link.
If you feel there are many links in the current navigation box, I'd like to make a help box and move "Help"/"Tech requests"/"Contact Internet Brands" into it. -- Tatata 08:05, 23 October 2008 (EDT)
I'm with Cacahuate on this—we already have a handy link to :en via the "in other languages" box. If anything, I'd like to remove a few items from the nav box, since it is long. --Peter Talk 11:24, 23 October 2008 (EDT)
Well it's no big deal, it just bugs the hell out of me that i need to press first main page, and then the other languages link to get back to wikitravel when I've uploaded an image - guess i'm just lazy Sertmann 23:26, 8 November 2008 (EST)

Searching Images

I have tried searching for images on the image search prompt and have never been able to find it that way. I would always have to resort to pressing recent changes. Is there some reason why this is the case?Paula 23:44, 4 November 2008 (EST)

The latest photo's are found by using the "Gallery of new files" in the navigation menu on the top left corner. If you want to know if there are any photo's of a place, yes, use image search, type in the place name plus check the square before image and Category, if they aren't checked automatically. --Rein N. 07:29, 5 November 2008 (EST)
Thanks that works. And no, you do have to check the boxes manually.Paula 19:58, 26 November 2008 (EST)
At the right top of all pages in the personal Preferences menu, tab search, you can preset those boxes if you want. --Rein N. 23:40, 26 November 2008 (EST)

Autotravel.org.ru images

There are a ton of images of Russia (like this one) that are owned by autotravel.org.ru, but for which the site has given permission to freely redistribute and to make derivative works, provided proper attribution (which seems to be simply a link back to their site). Would it make sense to create a template for copyrighted images requiring attribution, or should I just make a template for images from this particular site? --Peter Talk 17:55, 8 November 2008 (EST)

Tech Request: Print version

Before i file a request, has the google adds on the print version of articles been up for discussion before? Sertmann 23:27, 8 November 2008 (EST)

Reusing Wikitravel images on other sites

Alright I have looked for information on this and have had no results. So, I will ask. For the images I have uploaded, is it okay for me to re upload them to Flickr or Imageshack from there it could be posted on forums, and is it okay to copyright the versions on flickr or imageshack? Thanks an I amm sorry if it is here! Edmontonenthusiast 19:23, 11 December 2008 (EST).

If they are your photos you can do what you like with them, and licence them as many different times and ways as you wish you. What you do on flickr, or anywhere else is nothing at all to do with Wikitravel. You could question if there is any point in limiting their use on other sites, seeing people could simply copy the image from here if they wanted to, so this may cause you to think about what you are trying to achieve. As far as wikitravel is concerned, what you do on any other sites is your own business. Wikitravel doesn't own any of the images. --Inas 19:53, 11 December 2008 (EST)
Okay, thank you. In here, or on the talk, could you explain further on what you meant by "question if there is any point in limiting their use on other sites, seeing people could simply copy the image from here if they wanted to, so this may cause you to think about what you are trying to achieve" cause I don't really understand. Thanks. Edmontonenthusiast 20:05, 11 December 2008 (EST).
Take, an example. Consider your image Image:City-Centre.jpg. You uploaded it, and have placed it into the public domain. This means anybody can now do whatever they want with it. Anybody can copy it, use it on their own website, print it out and stick it on their wall, use it to advertise their fish and chip shop. Anything. They can sell it as a print. They can modify it and sell it as a print. You can do nothing to stop them, as you have give away all your rights, forever. So, if you now upload it to flickr, but with a more restrictive licence that prevents some form of use it won't really have any effect, as anyone can just download the image from here, and use it without restriction. So, you can use a more restrictive licence on another site if you wish, but the fact that it may have very little effect may cause you to think about what it is you are trying to achieve. Someone else could just copy the same image to flickr and place it there with no restrictions on its use. And just to complete my example, I just did it, so the picture is now on flickr with no restrictions or licence and no acknowledgement. --Inas 20:33, 11 December 2008 (EST)
Three things, 1, thank you! 2, I don't see it on flickr :S. 3, Can I implement a stricter license that says I have the rights blah, but it cannot be copied or used freely- I believe so, am I correct? Edmontonenthusiast 20:42, 11 December 2008 (EST).
No, you are not correct. All Wikitravel content can be copied and used freely (as in speech). That is what you agree to when you upload, and arguably it is the reason for the existence of the project. You can use CC-by-SA. All that says, additionally, is that you have to be acknowledged (by your pseudonym). The other conditions of the licence actually act to ensure that it can be copied, rather than placing any restrictions on copying. --Inas 20:52, 11 December 2008 (EST)
Yeah, I was reading into it, your right. I had no idea of that- now I'll be more careful of what I upload, ;). Edmontonenthusiast 21:02, 11 December 2008 (EST).
Or if it is just credit that concerns you, continue to upload pictures, but select a cc-by-sa license instead of Public Domain, which will then ensure that you are credited if someone uses it – cacahuate talk 21:07, 11 December 2008 (EST)
Yeah, I will put it on my list to change all my images licensing over the next while. Edmontonenthusiast 21:23, 11 December 2008 (EST).
The benefit to you is that everyone using it will have to give credit to some fictional psuedonym on wikitravel. A somewhat dubious benefit, I would have thought. There are possibly some other benefits to the communnity as well, however. --Inas 00:58, 12 December 2008 (EST)

Simple pagename function?

I asked this over on En:, but perhaps this is a better place, since it might turn into a feature request. Is there a function similar to {{PAGENAME}} that doesn't include parentheticals like (city) and doesn't include the hyphen or things before it? i.e. would display "Deep Ellum" instead of "Dallas/Deep Ellum", or "Vernon" instead of "Vernon (Texas)"..? I should think it would be useful if there were but have no idea how to make one. Surely something like this must exist, since the page name fed to the browser window doesn't include these. I was primarily thinking that if there were such a function or if someone could make one, we could plop it into our article templates, and it would eliminate the all-too-frequent occurences of new contributors making an article and forgetting to fill in the title blank, resulting in new pages that literally begin with, for example,

City name is a city in...

CeCILL

Recently, while writing about Ethiopia, I came across their national dish injera. I found an image on Wikimedia Commons and to my surprise, I noticed a free software license called CeCill. According to the article on Wikipedia, it is compatible with copyleft. So, my question is of course if it would be OK to upload such images to Shared? Riggwelter 12:10, 28 December 2008 (EST)

I'm going to say no, unfortunately. CeCILL is a copyleft license, but it's not compatible with ours, which is from Creative Commons. As far as I can tell, works that are derivative of CeCILL-licensed items must be likewise released as CeCILL (or as GFDL, if it includes GFDL content as well). I believe we can only upload items that are licensed CC-BY-SA 1.0 or above, or are in the public domain. LtPowers 17:21, 16 January 2009 (EST)
You can always request the copyright holder of the work to relicense it under CC-BY-SA 1.0 or a newer version. ksd5 12:01, 18 January 2009 (EST)
