The Travellers' pub is where Wikitravellers of all languages get to together to talk about Wikitravel, and where you can ask for help if you're confused, lost, afraid, tired or annoyed by Wikitravel. Categories for food and maps

I've plunged forward and created a Category:Cuisine of Singapore, under Category:Cuisine and Category:Singapore, to file away the increasingly large pile of food-related pictures for the country. I would suggest replicating this for all countries, and also creating "Maps of X" categories. Jpatokal 03:30, 19 February 2009 (EST)

I think the style of the food is more important than where it was taken, so it should go under Category:Cuisine of Vietnam -- with a note that it's actually taken in the US and of dubious authenticity. Wikitravel down?

It seems as though Wikitravel (especially :en) has basically been down all day. Without notice. And on the same week that Wikitravel was named Voice of America's website of the week—the egg's on them for every hapless reader they send here only to find out that the relationship between the wiki and the server owners is completely dysfunctional, and that our website is unreliable from a technical standpoint.

Given that Brent was the guy interviewed in that article, I'd figure IB would at least be aware of the fact that this is a bad time to let the site languish like this, but I have no idea how things are run at that company. --Peter

Pages for non-English version users

Since I noticed that en:MediaWiki:Upload was changed to "Don't upload file", I proposed to ja: in Travellers' pub that we should hide the link of Spcial:Upload in toolbox by using CSS[2] and change the link text of the link to shared in navigation box from "Wikitravel Shared" to "アップロード" ("Upload" in Japanese). In the discussion, it is pointed out that we need consideration for users who are unfamiliar with English. So now, I'm thinking to create new pages in Japanese on share; "メインページ" or "Main Page/ja" corresponding to "Main Page", and/or, "ファイルをアップロードするには" or "How to upload files/ja" corresponding to "How to upload files". Is it OK to create non-English pages on shared? Comments, welcome. -- Tatata 01:10, 22 May 2009 (EDT)

I would be very happy to do this. Is it necessary, though, to have the multilingual information directly on shared? I'm a big fan of Ricardo's Shared portal in Portuguese. But then again, there is detailed information here, like how to upload files, that would be good to have available in other languages. /ja format might work pretty well. Ah, I didn't think about linkage between languages in the same wiki. Though I don't know it should be call as the multilingual information directly, OpenStreeMap have multilingual information in the same wiki and they put a template[3] at the top of Main Pages like this[4]. How about that way?
As for CSS, we don't need IB's help now, because MediaWiki:Common.css is already enabled. I added "wikitable" class into ja:MediaWiki:Common.css for table format. -- Tatata 02:18, 22 May 2009 (EDT)

Before creating Main Page written in Japanese, I created Welcome, newcomers/ja and How to upload files/ja first. Also I created Template:Language-wn and Template:Language-up to provide language links for the same pages written in other languages.

As for Main Page, may I rip off "Picture of the Moment" thing from Main Page? I'd like to make it into a template, since I think it's nice if the Main Page written in Japanese have it jointly with the current Main Page. -- Tatata 05:01, 4 June 2009 (EDT)

Main namespace

At some point we decided to move our Shared policy articles into the main namespace, since, unlike with the language versions, we don't have any articles here, only categories, images, templates, and tech requests (each of which have their own namespace). But it turns out there are a bunch of non-policy pages that have been created in the main namespace, most of them redirects to categories. One has also come up as a vfd in the past month. This strikes me as undesirable—we should be able to use that special page to find all policy articles in one place.

So I see basically two options: 1) Allow pages for geographical locations and move all policy articles back into the "Wikitravel Shared" namespace, or 2) Delete all pages in the main namespace that have been created for geographical locations.

It seems to me that Evan created those pages in main namespace like Wikimedia Commons while he was irresolute about them. Also, it seems to me that he created them for the purpose of testing. -- Tatata 21:54, 3 June 2009 (EDT)
I don't really see what the real-world problem is. Annotated galleries of pictures are nice, and not having to type "Wikitravel Shared:" every time you want to link to a policy is also nice. Does either option actually make using the site better?
I'm OK with setting a policy that annotations, galleries etc should always be done on the Category page, but I don't think redirects to that category from the main namespace do any harm. Jpatokal 13:20, 9 June 2009 (EDT)
The real world problem is that lumping the policy articles in the main namespace with endless redirects will make Special:Allpages useless to find policy articles. And just how often do you need to find a list of all policy articles by looking at Special:Allpages? The set of policies here is much shorter and virtually static compared to the main WT; bring Category:Wikitravel Shared meta pages and/or Wikitravel Shared:Namespace index up to date once and we're done. Enforcement a license selection

I modified current upload.js to force a license selection by disabling "Upload file" button until a license selected, and test it as a local file with Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari on my Windows pc.[5]

Before I file a tech request, I'd like to ask advice here.

  1. Since this script force uploaders to select a license, I think it's better add an option to select a licence after upload with Template:Dont know or something like that, in order to avoid an inaccurate license selection. When uploader select this option, license tag must be corrected within 24 hours. If there is no correction by the uploader, we send that file to vfd and wait 2 weeks. How about this?
  2. I guess this script will affect whole site; all language version and shared. The trouble is that it has a side effect; "Upload file" button will always be disabled on language versions which don't have MediaWiki:Licenses.
  3. After I file a tech request, should I add it to Roadmap, or just send an email to tech team? Roadmap#Nominations seems too complex to add/update, and recently the page itself seems to be paid no attention.

Nice work, this is a good step forward. [Template:Dont know] is irrelevant now.... we already have a policy that uploads without license selected are automatically ccbysa 1.0, and always have been. The point of forcing a license selection at time of upload is to make it even more clear, and move us forward.... adding an option to select a license later would be a step backward, and we definitely don't want that.... it would defeat the whole purpose of forcing a license selection at upload in the first place – cacahuate talk 12:27, 9 June 2009 (EDT)

Better formatting on language-specific sites?

When looking at the image page of a shared-sourced image on any of the language-specific sites (as you would by clicking on an image in any article), it doesn't format the templated information at all. Although you can click through to shared to read the image information and licensing, it would be nicer to have it display the same way on both sites -- which is already how it operates between Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons (examples: Commons-sourced image on WP, same image on Commons itself). Can we go about this without tech team involvement? I tried copying over Template:Information directly, but without success. - Dguillaime 20:31, 25 June 2009 (EDT)

Attribution when translating

Nice, it doesnt show the other language versions contributors when printing the page though. I don´t rember if the printed page is supposed to hold all info or if it is supposed to be accompanied by some other texts, like in wikipedia. Yeah, there isn't a great solution, as regular users (including admins) can't edit the names displayed at the bottom of the page. Pasting the credits-page from the original version into the article itself is really a non-starter, since previous discussions have shown Wikitravelers to be pretty adamant about keeping travel content and meta content separate.
On the upside, Wikitravel is in no way liable for printed versions—re-use is the responsibility of the re-user. The sorts of users that this could make trouble for would, I'm guessing, be re-users like hostels that print and distribute articles to their guests. Given the obscure translation process, obscure difference in print & web display, and then obscure usage, I doubt anyone in that model would ever run into trouble with the law. --Peter Talk 23:36, 17 July 2009 (EDT)

Bot vandalism on hebrew

Does anyone have admin rights on hebrew? I think we need to clean up there, page up and page down of the annoying "nice site" crap topped of with a nice seasoning of link spam. It may be why the bot keeps probing us, so I think we have better give it clean up. And maybe close it down for anonymous contributions, or altogether. Sertmann 14:16, 23 July 2009 (EDT)

Shutting down anon contributions would be the best tack. Zvika & Orel are the only admins, neither of whom is active. There are no active bureaucrats, and Zvika declined on the basis that the site is basically dead. (Wish she had accepted anyway, since we would in this case be able to get a hold of her via email...)
Cleaning up the mess would probably either require doing it by hand w/o admin rights, or a motivated admin here requesting sysop privileges from IB. --Peter Talk 18:52, 23 July 2009 (EDT)
I checked around a bit more—there are a bunch of language versions where the spambots are more or less running free: in addition to :he, there are :it, :fr, :hu, and :pl. :pl at least has one active contributor, who is catching some of the bots.  :it & :fr have been basket cases for some time. Despite being some of our most developed language versions, they have virtually no moderation to speak of, which just lets them slide further and further away from usefulness. That was happening to :es for quite a while too...
It might be a good idea for us to come up with a strategy to help revive some of these language versions. To start up a new version, or to resuscitate a dead one, requires we have at least one dedicated user who is working on the site near-daily, and who does the necessary janitorial work, as well as some high quality content generation work, and who welcomes new users and answers their questions. Without a "leader" like that, wikis will not gain regular contributors, and will remain wild. Both :it & especially :fr would be top priorities to get restarted, IMO.  :es would be good too—I don't have the time (or the language skills, really) to do much beyond keeping a lid on spam/vandalism. --Peter Talk 00:09, 24 July 2009 (EDT)
For each language versions which don't have active bureaucrat, how about to recruit 2 or more new bureaucrats from users who already have sysop on other language versions? Of course a "leader" like that is the best, but I think that a bureaucrat whom we can get in touch with is better than no bureaucrat at all as a first step to revive those language versions, if the bureaucrat can't speak that language or can't work on that language version daily. If an active bureaucrat is there, we can consider to recruit temporary admins from other language versions in case of emergency. -- Tatata 03:24, 24 July 2009 (EDT)

Bureaucrats, are only useful if there are people who wants to be promoted to admin or if the admin rights are to be redrawn. Active adnins and active users can take care of Spam as well. on fr: the problem is that there no active admins at all. I patrol as user some Wikitravels, and yes, sometimes I mis the extra buttons. Right, the point of the bureaucrat nominations is so that we have someone who can make other users admins on language versions like :he—if an admin from Shared wants to join in the effort to clean up a dead language version, then that's something we should try to make possible. Searching through namespaces

Currently, images on Shared are tied to a location only through the Category system. This makes searching for a location from the "Search" box on the left pointless, because it only checks the main namespace by default. Either we should change the default search behavior to search the Category namespace as well, or we should begin widespread implementation of mainspace articles named after locations (e.g., Portugal, which is currently up for vfd). Changing the search bar to search categories by default would be useful. I'd recommend creating a feature request, with the knowledge that it won't be fulfilled under present realities. Shouldn't be too big a deal, though, since Shared seems to be visited only by uploaders or experienced users looking for images. --Peter Talk 23:06, 18 August 2009 (EDT)

Updating thumbnails

I have uploaded a new version of a map, which does not appear in the thumbnail in its new form. The new image is there if you click on the enlarge button, and purging the page cache does nothing. Changing the thumbnail size brings in the new image, going back to the original size brings back the old thumbnail. With 99.99% probability, the image has been replaced fine, there's just a cache in your browser/ISP/Wikitravel that's showing you the old image. Ctrl-Reload may (or may not) help, but rest assured, within a day or so everybody will see the new version. Jpatokal 09:31, 15 October 2009 (EDT)

WT articles in the Japanese book

I read the Japanese book titled 「サバイバル時代の海外旅行術」("How to information for overseas travelling at the age of survival" (well…, sort of…), written by Tsuyoshi Takashiro, ISBN978-4-334-03518-1) and find that it briefly introduces the English Wikitravel as "a useful information next to CIA World Fact Book, and the informative Dominican article is an example" (this one also says that still blanky Japanese page(s) as something of challenge…).

The author severely criticizing the too-commercialized Japanese travel guide books as "books not for travelers but for Airlines and other sponsors of those travel guide books".
