search rankings

Yandex is the major search engine for Russian users, and our position on it is poor.

First, we never mention "бесплатный путеводитель" or "скачать", as far as I can see. Second, there's some chance that Yandex robots were blocked by Wikitravel tech administrators -- at least it's not available from office network of Yandex for several months now. --DenisYurkin 16:47, 5 July 2010 (EDT)

how to promote

Igor mentioned that a better way to attract Russian contributors will be through press releases, not search engines, and that this is how ru:wikipedia has had success.

I would also consider researching habrahabr.ru (geeks-oriented community-written news site)--for example we can regularly create some event / post a milestone passed. But it needs research, I'm not very familiar with it.

Second, I believe partnership with some travel-centric communities (like livejournal.com/~ru_travel) can help--but we need to be creative in how to approach that. --DenisYurkin 16:51, 5 July 2010 (EDT)
