==Catch-all pattern==
+

+
I added the following pattern on jamwiki.org a while back, and it seems to catch a significant amount of spam that hits that site.  The pattern will block any list of ten or more URLs of the form "http://example.com http://example2.com..." that is added - as far as I can see there shouldn't be any legitimate edits that use that pattern, but spammers do it all the time.  I'd like to add it here, but if it is found to block any legitimate edits please revert.

: I tweaked the pattern slightly to also ten of more URLs of the form "[http://example.com] [http://example.com]...".  It doesn't catch links of the form "[http://example.com text] [http://example.com text]...", which is probably the next iteration that will be needed... -- [[User:Wrh2|Ryan]] • ([[User talk:Wrh2|talk]]) • 13:38, 16 March 2008 (EDT)

:: I wrote a new one '''<nowiki>((\[https?://(\S*\.)+\S+\ .*\]\s*)|(https?://(\S*\.)+\S+\s+)){6,}</nowiki>''' to catch '''<nowiki>[http://example.com text] http://www.example.com.na [http://example.com]</nowiki>''' in any combination. Works perfectly in kregexpeditor, but for some reason it does not work on the blacklist if I look for 10 repetitions. Seems to work fine for 6 though.

== removal romantica tours dot com for spam list ==
+

+
Hi Ryan, I am writing this to you regarding the black listing of romantica tours dot com
+
I recently hired a company to optimize our website and improve our ranking with the search engines. By browsing the internet I find out they used unethical techniques, and one of them was to add content on Wiki Travel without my permission in various sections related to Italy. I was horrified that their stupidity had led us to be black listed on this reputable site. I proud myself to have created a company based on good and ethical practice in growing its business and I ask if you could please take romantica tours dot com off the black list.
+
I assure you that our link will not be associated again with any content on the website and please forgive me for my lack of supervision.
+
Thank you and best regard,
+
Aldo

: Hi Stefan, I don't exactly understand what was wrong with my tentative posting (did it 3 times, thought it was a bug with my proxy). Could you please explain me why parisforrent dot com could not be mentionned in this directory, I tought it was just on spot, totally compliant with the policy and the posting was pretty clear and informative. Thanks, Xavier
+
:: Hi Xavier.  An external link from Wikitravel to this site is likely against the policy consensus.  See [[Wikitravel:External links]].  Wikitravel is ''not'' a directory, but a travel guide.  It aims to put travelers in direct contant with any acccommodation providers in the destination, and does not generally allow consolidators, and similar. (An exception to this is sometimes made for local agent with a local address, where an apartment is placed with local lessor).  If after reading the policy, you still think a listing for your site is appropriate, please discuss.  I hope you can find some travel information to share on some destinations, Paris or otherwise.  --[[User:Inas|Inas]] 23:34, 8 February 2009 (EST)

Hi All, thanks a lot for these useful explanations. I was a little lost, and didn't understand why my tentative listing kept disapearing without any explanation.I thought it was a kind of bug...
+
I have read carefully the policy links you refered at and I still think that ParisForrent is perfectly legit and wikitravel policy compliant. We are an "real" agency, focused only on Paris vacation rentals with more than 10 years of business history. We do have an physical address, both in the US and in Paris and most of the apartement we offer belongs to us directly. I would really appreciate if somebody could review our website and explain to me why we are less relevant than the other listed in the Paris Sleep section. In any case, could you please take us off the "blacklist" because it is bad for our reputation and could impact our google ranking, something that would be totally unfair. I won't of course try again to publish us if you decide that we should not be there, even I don't realy understand why...
+
Thanks for your help! Xavier
+

+
: I've removed the listing from the blacklist.  I don't have time at the moment to review your site, but hopefully someone else can take a look and suggest how you might be able to integrate it into Wikitravel.  At a minimum you can [[Wikitravel:How to create a user account|create a user page]] and identify yourself and your site there.  See also [[Wikitravel:Welcome, business owners]] for helpful info. -- [[User:Wrh2|Ryan]] &bull; ([[User talk:Wrh2|talk]]) &bull; 13:49, 9 February 2009 (EST)

::  In general, agencies are outside policy.  If you run a tour, thats okay.  If you are an agent for a tour, it is usually not.  If you run a hotel, that okay, if you are an agent for one, it is usually not.  Apartments get a little hazy, because often an apartment cannot be let individually, because the owner only rents through an agent.  This is the basis for policy.  Your site only accepts payment in US$, it only gives a US phone number, it doesn't give a local address in Paris to pick up keys etc.  If this site were allowed it would be difficult not to allow any apartment consolidator.  I think it lies outside the policy.  --[[User:Inas|Inas]] 17:58, 9 February 2009 (EST)

lostpaddlerafting dot com seems to be a legitimate business, but despite requests in edit comments and on user talk pages the site has been added to everything from unrelated Colorado cities like Denver to the USA article, most recently using the edit comment "grammatical", apparently in an effort to disguise the change.  There are plenty of rafting outfits in the Rockies to choose from, so I don't think it hurts us to blacklist this overly-aggressive operator.  To the editor who has been adding these listings: please read [[Wikitravel:Don't tout]], which outlines the policies for listing a business on Wikitravel. -- [[User:Wrh2|Ryan]] &bull; ([[User talk:Wrh2|talk]]) &bull; 22:13, 10 April 2007 (EDT)

Why can't I add the agency link back? Which policy? I have been studying wikitravel policies these days. In this page http://wikitravel.org/en/Wikitravel:Activity_listings it says if the tour operator meet the certain conditions it is okay to list.
+
The conditions are
+
1.The operator must have a "real world" office with a phone number and address.
+
2.Do not list tour operators that act as a booking agent or travel-planner for the traveler—tour agencies should offer something as a supplement, rather than a replacement for Wikitravel guides. Listed tours should count as an activity available at a destination (e.g., a helicopter tour of a city, or a camel expedition into the Sahara).
+
3.Do not list resellers of tours, only list the actual tour operators.
+
4.Always list tour agencies if they are requisite to visit a certain area. Examples include tours required by law (e.g., Panmunjeom) and tours required due to exceptional danger (e.g., war zones and extreme environments such as the Amazon, Antarctica, Space, etc).
+

+
Is there anything that I miss? I don't want to be again the rules again. Thx!
+

+
: Your question has been answered many times, in many places on Wikitravel.  But for completeness, I will answer it again here.  Wikitravel aims to put travellers in direct contact with tour operators, who add substantial value at a destination.  Agents for tour operators cannot be listed.  At this point, I would suggest that you do not add the listing back, but if you believe that you have a complying listing, that you discuss it first on the talk page of the relevant article(s).  See  [[Wikitravel:Activity listings#Tour listings]] and [[Wikitravel:External links]] --[[User:Inas|Inas]] 02:06, 30 April 2009 (EDT)

Hi, there! I already read the two links above again. However, I still think I have the right to put it back:-)
+
Because 1. as business owners, my friend and I own ''**** (TLT)''; 2. **** is NOT agency for any tour operators. We have our own tourguides, cars, offices and we offer the final services to travelers directly without any agency. Our head office is just 5mins' walk from train station and thousands of travelers have joined our tours; 3.if needed you can leave an email add for me here then I can email you our license as a qualificated tour operator in China.

But no worries, I won't edit it back until I can show you that **** is NOT tout.

Hello Ryan and Evan
+
I am writing in to ask for rtwflights dot com and roundtheworldflights dot com to be removed from your blacklist, I hope this is the correct section to ask. Also to apologise - didnt realise you werent allowed to link to specific page tables. Had being doing it for ages mainly because I had written and updated a lot of the content - most of that was without links. Also didnt realise there was the talk section till someone showed it to me yesterday. Yeah as you say wasnt malicious but breaks the rules. Realise its a big no no now.

: If you could please confirm that you've read and understand [[Wikitravel:Don't tout]] (specifically: don't list the same site multiple times and don't use overly promotional language) and [[Wikitravel:External links]] (don't link to aggregator sites) then removal shouldn't be a problem.  Please also note that replacing an official link with your own (such as in this edit: [http://wikitravel.org/wiki/en/index.php?title=Round_the_world_flights&diff=993705&oldid=993699]) is a considered a fairly serious breach of etiquette on Wikitravel.  We appreciate the contributions, but current policies and guidelines have been set up to ensure that the site's primary focus is on travelers rather than on promoting specific businesses or organizations. -- [[User:Wrh2|Ryan]] &bull; ([[User talk:Wrh2|talk]]) &bull; 18:18, 11 July 2009 (EDT)

:: Hi Ryan Yup I now have read and understand the touting rules (specifically: don't list the same site multiple times and don't use overly promotional language) . In fact this whole talk section has been a bit of a revelation about what you can and cant do and the direct links into sections wont happen again. Apologies again. I would like to update the RTW rule data (mainly because the info in it is a good year out of date) but I'll stick to the technical data and not touch any links or use self serving language. Would having one link within specialist Travel Agents be ok? Am asuming it would? But wont put it till you guys okay. Cheers again and have a good Sunday

::: I've removed the blacklisting - thanks for reading the guidelines.  It's probably fine to add a single link in the [[Round the world flights]] article, especially if it's done in the context of a section that provides travel advice to users who want to book these tickets through such an agency (specifically: what are the advantages / disadvantages, things to know, etc).  Since such a link is somewhat of a border-line case (it isn't to the airline's own site, but is to a source that is useful specifically for the travel topic) I suspect that if the section eventually turns into merely a list of dozens of links that a future editor might remove or trim down the section, so the most important thing would be making sure that such a section is written for travelers, is not overly-promotional, and provides useful information about the businesses being linked.  Hope that helps! -- [[User:Wrh2|Ryan]] &bull; ([[User talk:Wrh2|talk]]) &bull; 17:02, 12 July 2009 (EDT)

I've cleaned up a number of expressions in the blacklist that were escaping (preceding with a backslash) a number of things they didn't need to.  For reference, the only ''literal'' characters that need escaping are:
+
* Punctuation: '''.  $  ^  |  *  \  /'''
+
* Brackets: '''( ) [ ] < > { }'''
+
Things that ''don't'' need escaping include spaces, colons, and hyphens.  In some cases, including an inadvertent escape can cause your expression to fail in unexpected ways - "dull" would block the word dull, but "\dull" would only block "0ull", "1ull", ..., "9ull".  Similar problems meant a few items on the list were previously ineffective.  - [[User:Dguillaime|Dguillaime]] 21:23, 22 July 2009 (EDT)

== span on<!-- -->mouseover ==

This is one of the identifying characteristics of a long-running, utterly incomprehensible bot (or very bored human) that adds chunks of auto-translated text to pages -- usually Dutch, but the most recent example is Swedish instead: [http://wikitravel.org/wiki/en/index.php?title=Kanchanaburi&diff=1211455&oldid=1207493].  The phrase is part of some assorted HTML that always accompanies the edits, which references some JavaScript that doesn't exist.  I can't imagine we'd ever want any on<!-- -->mouseover() events in text anyhow, so it should be safe to block.  - [[User:Dguillaime|Dguillaime]] 15:56, 2 August 2009 (EDT)

+
: Would anyone be opposed to simplifying this pattern to just "on<!-- -->mouse"?  I can't think of a case where adding any JS mouse events would be appropriate, and the more general pattern protects us from all sorts of potential spambot annoyances. -- [[User:Wrh2|Ryan]] &bull; ([[User talk:Wrh2|talk]]) &bull; 16:04, 2 August 2009 (EDT)

:: Having just spent thirty minutes chasing down car rental listings I'd suggest that Wikitravel probably needs to be very suspicious of car rental listings that show up here.  While some may be valid, it looks like a vast number of aggregators (or potentially just a handful that own multiple domains) are using Wikitravel and other sites for search engine optimization, and they are significantly more advanced than the spambots that hit us (search for rhino car rental - there are tons of blog postings and such, but they all look to be manufactured).  Anyone willing to investigate further will probably find a number of listings currently on the site that need to be removed. -- [[User:Wrh2|Ryan]] &bull; ([[User talk:Wrh2|talk]]) &bull; 02:08, 3 September 2009 (EDT)

Budget dot co dot uk are legitimate in the UK and easycar partially. easycar is part of the easy group (like the budget airliner easyjet) and have some of their own fleet. rhinocarhire, anycarhire and the others mentioned are all brokers.
+

+
Hi, would you please consider removing rhinocarhire dot com from the spam blacklist.  We are disappointed to see ourselves listed in this directory and the practice that seems to have led us there is certainly not condoned by our business.  We have traced the issues back to a former editor / SEO specialist who has not been involved with the company for some time now.  I would welcome any comments or advice of any further actions that we would need to undertake to be removed from the blacklist.  Many thanks in advance. {{unsigned|86.27.41.222}}

: Given the problems with this company in the past, and the fact that your web site claims to have rental fleets in places where you do not (I live in LA, and despite what your web site says you do not own a rental fleet here) then I think it is highly unlikely that this site will be removed from the blacklist.  If you have a strong argument for its removal please state it, but know that once on the blacklist the bar for removal is pretty high. -- [[User:Wrh2|Ryan]] &bull; ([[User talk:Wrh2|talk]]) &bull; 12:07, 16 January 2011 (EST)

Hi Ryan, thanks for your feedback.  We understand the wiki policy on external links and where not to link (brokers / aggregators) and accept that this has happened previously, however as stated this was traced back to a former editor who is no longer involved with the company.  I am at a loss to see what else we can do to be removed from the list.  We accept that the actions carried out on our behalf breached the wiki guidelines and for that we apologise, however this practise is not condoned and no action of this nature has taken place for some time.  I would be most grateful if you could further advise the next course of action, or reconsider our removal from the list.  I hope on this occasion you are willing to accept good faith and our acknowledgement of previous mistakes. We do not attempt to be listed on wiki as understand the rules on brokers, however are powerless to prevent spam from third parties that could be detrimental to us.  Would it be possible to create a separate list where we can self impose a listing so we cannot be listed in the main pages, however not be labelled as spam?
+

+
: A note was left on my talk page asking that I respond, so I would re-iterate that I don't believe that there is any value in removing this company from the blacklist.  It takes repeated spamming for a company to be added to this list, and once on the list it's up to the company to show why removal benefits Wikitravel.  Since this particular company rents cars from other companies it's not a primary source, and thus wouldn't qualify for listing on Wikitravel.  More importantly, there have been major problems with spam in the past, the company appears to have engaged in deceptive business practices by claiming to operate in locations where they were merely renting another company's vehicles, and it has set up fake blogs to boost the SEO value of the company, all of which have eroded the assumption of "good faith" and led to a situation where I honestly don't feel confident that the company is one that Wikitravel should be recommending that any traveler should trust. -- [[User:Wrh2|Ryan]] &bull; ([[User talk:Wrh2|talk]]) &bull; 11:40, 20 May 2011 (EDT)
+

+
Ryan, Thank you for the reply, however I do not see the justification for our site being labelled as spam by wiki travel any longer.  We accept that previous practices led to our listing, however we have been punished by this now and understand the rules and assure that any such practices are not condoned or permitted by the company.  As for claiming to have cars at locations where we do not, this is not true, we are a broker like many car hire sites and market products that are available to our customers from us.  We have an official car hire blog within our site, I am not aware of any fake blogs that you mention, please provide further information.  We are not requesting wiki travel to recommend our company, however to continue to label us a spam is unreasonable in our opinion.  I would like to point out that we were awarded Best Car Hire Website 2010 at the Travolution Awards and so find your comment regarding your recommendation not to trust our site unjust.  I would welcome the opportunity to discuss this matter further, can you please advise the best way to contact you.

: I included a bed and breakfast that is relevant to York, Yorkshire and East Yorkshire, with numerous other bed and breakfast listings under the default accommodation category.  I am not at war or a spammer.  The information is relevant to the page and improves the content for visitors interested in travelling to these areas.  I don't want to upset anyone or cause any harm.  I'm sorry if I have offended you in any way.  Perhaps if adding the listing to these three categories is too much we could at least add the listing to the East Yorkshire page which doesn't have much content?

If you have found any other listings braking our rules, please feel free to move them to the most exact destination article, we don't always manage to catch everything all the time. : Could you confirm that you've read [[Wikitravel:Don't tout]]?  Specifically, only list your business once, and only within the article for the location in which you actually operate, and do not use promotional language in the listing.  Generally if a site is removed from the blacklist, if the business in question violates the policy a second time then they are permanently blacklisted, so I'd just like to make sure that you understand where and how a business should be listed here before taking you off of the list.  Thanks! -- [[User:Wrh2|Ryan]] &bull; ([[User talk:Wrh2|talk]]) &bull; 12:27, 7 December 2009 (EST)

: I've removed the blacklisting, but please note the warning above - a site generally has to violate Wikitravel policy many times to be blacklisted, but after removal a second violation is generally sufficient for a permanent blacklisting.  Please make sure that you have read [[Wikitravel:Don't tout]], and note that even if it is not on the blacklist, editors may still remove your listing given that Disney-area articles generally have too many hotel listings to be useful. To help avoid that possibility it would be great if you could read [[Wikitravel:Welcome, business owners]] and add content to some of the articles about cities in your area, including info such as overviews of where the lodging is clustered, what to expect in terms of lodging quality, etc. rather than just adding a single business listing for your own advertising and promotion.  We often make the assumption that businesses willing to take time to work with Wikitravel are more likely to treat travelers well. -- [[User:Wrh2|Ryan]] &bull; ([[User talk:Wrh2|talk]]) &bull; 11:05, 10 December 2009 (EST)

We've been having a great deal of trouble with anonymous edits on [[Buying or renting a car in New Zealand]] with edit warring, inserting multiple links, improving their entries while simultaneously degrading their competitors' entries, and so forth.  Most recently they've simply replaced links to other companies with their own, e.g. [http://wikitravel.org/wiki/en/index.php?title=Buying_or_renting_a_car_in_New_Zealand&curid=55665&diff=1329053&oldid=1324277&rcid=1306424].  Attempts to communicate via [[User_talk:125.239.232.214|talk pages]] have been unsuccessful.  - [[User:Dguillaime|D. I've been wondering about this for while; Either all the touty hotels added to our Italian guides are done by the same person/agency, or there is some sort of tool to format the listings into Wikiformat, possibly automatically, since they all take a form like this recent addition:

They all have those distinct dots, and ''always'' include the address written exactly this way. I was wondering if we could blacklist "Cap:", and see what happens. I did a quick search, crawled through a dozen of the search results, and cannot did not find anything innocent this would block, as long as the colon is included in the expression.

And maybe add a comment to the line like <nowiki>Cap: <!-- Please use the Hotels: template in the button of the page, and skip postcodes --></nowiki>

: In pretty much your on words... because you do not rent out cars. We only allow for companies that actually do the renting. How many competitors do you have, 300-400? now imagine if each and every one of you added yourself to the 17.000+ locations, and it's easy to see why this would render our pages useless. Much more manageable with companies who has an actual office at the destination, and even then we don't allow any if there are more than 10. --[[User:Sertmann|Stefan (sertmann)]] <small>[[User_talk:Sertmann|talk]]</small> 07:29, 26 December 2009 (EST)

Revision as of 16:53, 12 November 2011

If reporting a problem with a domain, please write the name as site dot com instead of site.com, or you will trigger the blacklist again! If your site is currently on the blacklist and you wish to have it removed please comment below under the section about why the site was blacklisted in the first place (if there is no such section create a new section). Note that sites blacklisted due to violation of Wikitravel policy will only be removed once the editor in question has indicated that they have read and understand the relevant Wikitravel guidelines. Repeat offenders will generally not be removed from the blacklist.

removing backpackerscarmarket dot co nz

we would like the black list to be removed for our link, we were unaware of the rules about the numbers of links in each section and appologise for this. as for removing competitors i think this subject needs to be looked into further as you will find that our entry was the first to be removed and then degraded with libelous comments edited into information about our company. the information we left was informative and unbiased and at no stage did we degrade our competitors. we did remove the competitors that had written untruths about us, and in retrospect perhaps this was over zealous, however we were not familiar with this section of the website and didn't know how to make our grievances known. there is still a lot of information that is incorrect in this section, and we will continue to optimize this section so that it can be as useful as possible to visitors to New Zealand. We have now created an account as this seems to be the best way to go, and have read and fully understand the rules on these topics, many thanks.

Welcome to Wikitravel. You can review the history of the article [1] to get some idea of how disruptive your editing was. The article had to be protected due to the frequency of your disruptive edits. You were left multiple messages, but continued unabated until your site was blacklisted. There is no right of any business to be listed on Wikitravel, and I'm not convinced that you have the best interest of travellers to NZ in mind. --inas 18:18, 5 January 2010 (EST)
i can only appologise for the changes made, it appeared to me that someone was editing our entries/ and at times removing them completely as i assumed this was a competitor whose company was listed around the same time and started leaving all sorts of untruths about our company. as for messages i was unaware of any messages perhaps this was due to not having an account??? i would be interested to hear why you think these things. if you were to ask the 1000's of travelers that we have helped/ provided a good service to over the past 8 years i m sure they would disagree. but that is your opinion.
If you now have an account, can you please start signing your edits on this talk page? The signature button is second from the right on the toolbar of any edit screen. I will leave it to others more familiar with the history of your case to comment specifically. However, I will say that vandalising competitor listings and making other disruptive edits, and only thinking to stop and talk to us after you had been blacklisted, is not very smart. --Burmesedays 00:17, 8 January 2010 (EST)
ok thank you i didnt know how to do this, i understand that all records of edits can been seen so if someone would take the time to review them you will se that we were not the first to remove or vandalise anybodies edits. and as i have previously mentioned this section of the site was not known to me.--Backpackerscarmarket 19:42, 9 January 2010 (EST)

so if anyone actually bothers to check the edit history it is clear to see that i removed an edit from another, at the time, anonymous user which was making liabolous comments about my business whilst promoting another competitors business....mmmm. none of my edits have ever been abusive or liabolous. since that edit was made two or three users including inas have reverted my edits back to this anonymous users entry......a bit unfair and un substantiated dont you think??? i was as i have previously mentioned i was unaware of the login being so important nor of the rules about links or the talk facility etc so all i saw was various users continously removing my edits and replacing with lies made up by a competitor. i have since ceased removing these edits but still left a little confused as to the involvement of some apparently well respected members of this community in purveying malicious rumours. if someone would be so kind as to look into this and resolve the matter that would be great.--Backpackerscarmarket 22:38, 8 February 2010 (EST)

i have read and fully understand the relevant the wiki travel guidelines--Backpackerscarmarket 22:41, 8 February 2010 (EST)

Nonsense. I did no such thing. My only experience with and knowledge of your business has been your behaviour and interaction on this wiki.
I don't accept your naivety, the comments you claim you didn't see would have been right in front of you when you reverted the edits that you did. --inas 23:44, 8 February 2010 (EST)
Of course your edits have been abusive. You've been deleting competitors repeatedly [2][3], deleting them while simultaneously adding yourself [4][5][6][7][8], replacing their links with your own [9], replacing other companies with your own [10] and these are just a sample -- none of which involve even a negative comment about your company. Now, there was another anonymous user that was briefly involved in similar behaviour [11], but that was a single edit, subsequently reverted, and in no way justification for an ongoing edit war two months later after that user had left. -- D. Guillaime 00:48, 9 February 2010 (EST)

At this point I'm not sure there is a precedent for leaving a site on this list once the author is engaged, unless someone else knows of one. However, there is no guarantee your site will be listed here. --inas 23:44, 8 February 2010 (EST)

Actually, I do think there's precedent to leave sites on the blacklist despite author engagement. If either the behavior was egregious or the author is unrepentant, I don't see much reason to remove it. An apology and a clear commitment to not add their site again and to stop vandalizing articles would go some way towards building the good will for a removal, but I think we are under no obligation to poorly behaved touts. --Peter Talk 14:22, 9 February 2010 (EST)
The listing in question has been re-added to the article, albeit using a subpage of a consolidator webpage. Personally, I don't see it as an attempt to work within the guidelines, but rather a further attempt to work around them. We are talking used-car dealers here, I don't really know what standards of propriety we should expect. The options would either be to add the subsequent URL's here, or just take on the issue at the article itself. I'm inclined towards the latter. --inas 21:10, 10 February 2010 (EST)

my appologies inas i have taken another look back at the history and you are correct it wasn't you that reverted the edit back to the abusive edit that caused me to respond[[12]] , just to clarify we are not used car dealers, we do not sell cars we are a market, and we sell space to travelers to sell their own cars in. i have recently taken over the business and i have had a lot of problems with competitors trying to bad mouth us to bring the reputation of my business into disrepute and perhaps this is why i took the matter so personally, i can however promise that i will not involve my self with such behavior on this site again. --Backpackerscarmarket 15:00, 12 February 2010 (EST)

Seven Windmills B&B

Keeps double listing his business in several Amsterdam districts, despite numerous requests to stop. Hope this will get some attention. --Stefan (sertmann) talk 05:01, 14 January 2010 (EST)

Hello

I am Seven Windmills B&B owner. Firstly, let me say what a wonderful site this is.

The Amsterdam main page 'Sleep' section suggested with hyperlinks that visitors only stay in the Old Centre or South district for accommodation.

This discriminated against the grachtengordel area and other areas of the city like the Jordaan where most of the better, safer accomodation actually is.

Berfore the 'Amsterdam' page was restructured so that the city is clinically divided into administrative regions, we had many enquiries and lots of happy guest (mostly families) staying in our B&B. When the format of the page was changed, and no link to the grachtengordel area existed in the 'Sleep' section our page hit rate went to zero, and enquiries virtually stopped because of the way the main page was written - with a focus on cheap travel for singles.

It took me a while to figure why the enquiries had stopped. When I saw this new format it was clear that this situation might not be considered fair by some inckuding myslef, with my small business.

I also noticed a saw a block of text from the CityMundo booking agency in the 'Sleep' section directing everyone to their booking engine - and also notice they are not blacklisted here like my business ? How can this be so ?

So, in response, may I ask that I be allowed to advertise on Wikitravel under the grachtengordel section, and that my alteration to the 'Sleep section' whith a link to the grachtengrodel be allowed to the remain on the Amsterdam page ?

Many Thanks, Kerk

I've removed your blacklisting, I can't find any links to CityMundo, but if you come across such links, feel free to remove it, as links to booking engines are not allowed per our external links policy. As for the nitty gritty bits on how the sleep section on the main page is set up - I hope some of our Dutch users can comment on that, maybe you can take the wording up on Amsterdam's talk page. --Stefan (sertmann) talk 21:07, 22 January 2010 (EST)

To avoid spending 4 years on this user as Wikipedia has done, since he is apparently both relentless, persistent and thoroughly unable to work within online communites, I propose a blanket ban (blacklisting) on all Edgewater Investment Group websites.

Given some of the rather shocking reviews and postings online, in combination with the user's on-site behavior, I wouldn't be opposed, although I'm also somewhat uneasy with the precedent of a preemptive blacklisting. Would it be acceptable to simply blacklist URLs that have been added to Wikitravel articles in the past, and state that future URLs added by this company are also subject to blacklist? -- Ryan • (talk) • 13:56, 15 February 2010 (EST)
Fine by me, although a cursory look at the Wikipedia debacle over this user, the huge number of websites and url's employed by this company, seems to be related to their inability to work with online communities. Roman Homes

Hello, I am not familiar with editing in Wikitravel, and so I am not sure that this message will be read. If it is, please reply to this problem. I tried to write (in the "sleep" section of Rome) a brief description of our company Roman Homes, offering vacation rentals in Rome, also mentioning our website romanhomes dot com, but it doesn't go through. Seemingly our site is blacklisted. I read here that it could be that someone "removed competitor information". Now a few days ago an employee of mine said that because the policy instructed not to edit the website URL, than he removed all the URLs he found in the "sleep" section, because he believed that other competitors were violating your rule (!). Today I went to see the page he mentioned, and I found that the links of these competitors were there, and it wasn't possible to include a link to our site romanhomes dot com. Now I read that removing competitor information is a breach etc. Again this employee of mine thought that he was doing a good thing (!). Only now I understand that it was bad, and I am also glad that one can publish the URL of a website, to inform visitors about it. Can you kindly remove the "ban" on romanhomes dot com, as now we understand your policy, and we will abide by it? Thanks in anticipation. Mauro Abate - owner of Roman Homes, website romanhomes dot com —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Romanhom (talkcontribs)

There have been repeated instances of this company removing competitor URLs, as well as numerous pointers provided to the apartment rental listing policy since this company does not seem to have a "real world office" listed anywhere that I could see on their web site. While the URL removals may indeed have been an honest mistake, based on past behavior and the fact that the site would not seem to qualify to be listed here I'd be hesitant to remove it without first getting some assurance that the site will not again engage in anti-competitive behavior, and that they have read & understand the guidelines for when it is OK to list a rental agency. -- Ryan • (talk) • 11:53, 7 March 2010 (EST)

Hello Ryan,
I apologize again for the deletion of the URLs etc., as mentioned it was done in good faith by a collaborator of mine, who understood wrongly your policy (he believed that URLs should not be published, in fact he mentioned to me that he did not delete any text, but only the URLs, as you problably noticed).

We read well your policy, which I found in the link you prompted me to, and we agree with them. We honestly don't understand why you could not find the address and details of our agency, which I wrote in the edited text, and which can be also found in our website (please see the entry "Meet your guests" in the "Overview" drop-down menu of our site. The details are as follows. Roman Homes, address: Via Nettunense Nuova 65, 00040 Marino Rome (Marino is a little village in Rome's periphery, it is more ancient than Rome itself). Our phone numbers are: (+39) 069352216 or (+39) 3332420210. Our agency, working usually with exclusive rights agreement with the owners of vacation rental agencies, is one of the oldest and most reputable of Rome, operating since 1997, although it was active since 1990 as a cultural society of Rome University, hosting people coming to Rome for cultural purposes. Throughout the years, we have been pioneers in many aspects of this activity in Rome (first agency to organize in the 90s a network of room rentals for people coming to Rome solely for cultural reasons, first website in Rome to use digital photography and especially panoramic photos, first agency in Italy to organize online a car service etc.). Usually, our website is sadly plagiarized by copycats, for which we had to resort to lawsuits. Among the copycats, some of the other agencies edited in wiki Travel. For ex. the agency Rome Sweet Home began in 2001, editing their website largely by copying/pasting text and photos from our website, which is considered one of the best and most complete presenting Rome (and not only the sheer apartments rented). Should you require additional information, I will be glad to provide it. Thanks, and keep up your good work. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Romanhom (talkcontribs)

I've removed this URL, but would encourage the site owner to carefully read the apartment listing policy as well as Wikitravel:Don't tout. -- Ryan • (talk) • 10:54, 8 March 2010 (EST)

Thanks Ryan, and before posting anything I will read well again the apartment listing policy and also the "Don't tout", although it is sometimes hard to understand the borderline between the allowed or correct listing information, and what is touting. I will do my best, hopefully it will work out. Regards, Mauro.

This is a second message, after reading the apartment listing policy and also the "Don't tout" policy. We understood well both, and we'll do our best to follow the guidelines and the policies. Thanks again Ryan. Regards, Mauro Abate

You persistently edit-warred after your link was correctly removed from Vienna. If you took the trouble to read Wikitravel:Accommodation_listings#Apartment_listings you would see why - no real world address provided amongst other things. On top of that your listing was badly formatted with a front link drawing attention to it, and kept appearing at the top of the list, rather than in alphabetical order. Messages to this effect were left in the edit history at Vienna but ignored.--Burmesedays 09:55, 30 March 2010 (EDT)

I'm afraid you haven't made a very good case as to why your site should NOT be blacklisted. Sites aren't added to the blacklist unless there have been repeated violations, including ignoring pointers left by other users. If that's the case with your business then I'm not sure that Wikitravel is an appropriate venue for you to advertise on. -- Ryan • (talk) • 10:37, 7 April 2010 (EDT)

swept in from pub:

For the skype uninitiated, could someone explain why edits like this [15] are occurring? Is there anything we can do to stop this from happening? --Peter Talk 10:29, 7 April 2010 (EDT)

Peter, Skype is similar to an instant messenger but when you look at a page and skype is activated plus the skype highligt you can immediately call the number. It's rather a nuisance imho because when a page is full of it then virtually any number can be imediately called via your skye account. It's called skype out and you can call through this any phone number in the world. In essence it turns an article in a virtual yellow page site and you can call all phone numbers. I think it's a promotional tool and therefore i work hard to delete it. Also it's against our way we format listings because it doesn't benefit the reader (and especially the editor) and is just a tool to easier call a business. jan 10:39, 7 April 2010 (EDT)

YOUR most recent edit removed your competitor's listings, so it's a bit disingenuous to say that you are a victim here. Hi Ryan, sorry I am not real sharp with a computer. Since those listings contained incorrect phone numbers, I didn't see the harm. If you look at the history you will see this spammer has been up to this for awhile, just recently posting other companies. The spammer is only out to cause harm. I asked Jan for help in my talk section awhile back, but I must have done something wrong. If I goofed I apologize.

I noticed the http://wikitravel.org/en/Wikitravel:External_links#What_not_to_link_to states " Rental cars operators, in cities where they are common (10 or more operating in the city). Typically we don't provide details of national car rental chains in local guides. Providing details at the national level, and mentioning the name and location at local level is sufficient if required."

Since GRC is the only car rental agency in Playa El Yaque, I am requesting that a link be permitted to be placed under the Playa El Yaque portion. If you think it should say something other then what it does I will need help in formatting because computers are not my bag. Thanks MustSee 16:23, 17 October 2010 (EDT)

Time to trim the blacklist?

There are some disadvantages to having a long blacklist - large regular expressions are slower, it's tougher to manage a long list, and some of our patterns may be overly broad or targeted to specific users who are no longer vandalizing the site (example: (Yangshuo).*(Julie)). Would anyone mind beginning a process to try to trim this list down a bit by removing some of the more obvious cleanup targets? If something is removed that triggers an increase in spam we can always re-add it later, but I think it's probably time to get rid of some of the phone number patterns and similar items that may have outlived their usefulness. -- Ryan • (talk) • 15:03, 15 June 2010 (EDT)

Error in Digha article

When I wanted to revert this mass, unexplained removal, I've been notified about a blacklisted link in the article. As far as I can see, there is only one external link in the article (the one at the intro), and I can't tell whether it really is an official homepage (and thus really deserves to be at the top), but it certainly is not blacklisted (or, at least I couldn't notice it in the list). How to get around this problem? – Vidimian 04:52, 16 June 2010 (EDT)

Hi! I just tried and was able to save the article. Please try again and otherwise log in and out (sometimes that solves the problem). jan 05:05, 16 June 2010 (EDT)
Nope, logging out and in did not work. Could you please try undoing that edit I mentioned yourself, so we can see if the problem is somehow restricted to me or anybody trying to undo that edit goes through the same? – Vidimian 05:12, 16 June 2010 (EDT)
Burmeseday already did it. If the problem continues maybe ask Ryan as he knows a lot of good tricks. jan 05:16, 16 June 2010 (EDT)
Isn't that edit made after Burmesedays took care of something else? Or am I too sleepy to be able to see clearly? – Vidimian 05:21, 16 June 2010 (EDT)
I just tried to revert it as well, and also was blocked by the spam filter – cacahuate talk 05:46, 16 June 2010 (EDT)
One of the phone numbers in a hotel listing was the culprit. I think that this is a further argument in favor or pruning old blacklist entries as we seem to be causing some unintended collateral damage. -- Ryan • (talk) • 10:37, 16 June 2010 (EDT)

http://www dot sitio-do-alemao dot 20fr dot com/ Mariusm98 12:19, 23 June 2010 (EDT)

20fr dot com is being blocked from the main Mediawiki blacklist. We could theoretically whitelist it here, but in general we won't do so without a good reason - what is the site you're trying to link to? A gift shop owner has now re-added this listing to the Bali article four times and ignored requests to stop. Bishkek

Hello, I am trying to add a guest house I stayed at to the list of budjet accomadation in Bishkek. It wont let me and refers me here. Perhaps I am making some mistake, I am not sure. There are two email addresses and two phone numbers involved but I tried it without them, in otherwords just a sentence and I was still blocked. Could someone please explain this to me. Thank you.

What I want to add is:

Sabyrbek's Guest House, +996 312 300710, +996 312 300710, sabyrbek@mail.ru alymkan@yandex.ru The home of the famous Kyrgyz author T. Sydykbekov, is now managed by his son the amiable Sabyrbek. It is very centrally located. 21 Razzakova (just south of Moscovskaya), opposite the German embassy. Guests are welcome to use the kitchen facilities and internet is available.

It looks like you were able to add the business correctly in this edit. I tried a test edit on that article and didn't encounter any problems, but please provide additional information if you're still having issues. -- Ryan • (talk) • 14:01, 14 August 2010 (EDT)

Thanks, I have never done this before so I am not clear as to how it works. The first few times i tried to post it by editting the budget accomadation section that is when i encountered the problem mentioned above. I then noticed the add listing button for Sleep in general, that is the sucessful edit you have pointed out. However, I can only see that edit if I use the link you placed above. If I just open the Bishkek page it is not there...is there some delay? Also I dont see any way of placing the new listing under the buget heading instead it is alone above that between sleep and the budget subheading. How do I change this? I realize this is not really the place for questions like this but I dont know what is, if you could help I would really appreciate it.

You may need to reload the page in your browser to see the latest version. I've moved the listing to the "Budget" section, which can be done by clicking "edit" and moving the appropriate content. -- Ryan • (talk) • 01:56, 15 August 2010 (EDT)

Hello Ryan! I was trying to put the website onto the following pages:

I can only save the website as www.omeida\.com.cn. Whenever I try to save it as www dot omeida dot com doct cn it says "The page you wanted to save was blocked by the spam filter. This is probably caused by a link to an external site." The same thing happens when I try to save the email address info@omeida dot com dot cn on to the page.--Lsz0719 20:35, 13 September 2010 (EDT)[[User:lsz0719] • (talk) • 22:46, 12 September 2010 (EDT)

That pattern is on the base Mediawiki blacklist, which generally means that at least one of the Mediawiki sites has experienced significant spam from that URL. Given that they both point at what seems to be the same Chinese language school I'm hesitant to remove the pattern without a very good reason to do so - we've already got a number of language schools listed in our guides, so unfortunately I'm not sure that this one warrants an exception to the blacklist. -- Ryan • (talk) • 21:51, 13 September 2010 (EDT)

Thanks for your reply, Ryan. Is there any information we could provide to let you consider remove our website from the blacklist? Our school is the biggest Chinese language school in Yangshuo. I'm sure it is worth being listed on Wikitravel guides.--Lsz0719 03:11, 15 September 2010 (EDT)

Personally, I'd want to know why the site is on the Mediawiki blacklist. A site can get on that list because its owners spammed a Mediawiki site, or one of its servers was compromised and was used for spamming, or for several other reasons. My understanding is that it's fairly difficult to get on the Mediawiki blacklist, so once a site is on there I think we should respect that list unless there is a really good reason to make an exception. -- Ryan • (talk) • 10:10, 15 September 2010 (EDT)

This user has been busily adding the official tourism web site for the country of South Korea to dozens of articles. Since per Wikitravel:External links this link is appropriate for the South Korea article (and only the South Korea article) a permanent blacklisting is inappropriate, but how would people feel about temporarily removing it from the South Korea article and then adding it to the blacklist as a way to try and get this user's attention? It is a waste of time for the user to keep adding it to articles, and a waste of time for patrollers to then revert those additions. pbali dot com

pbali dot com appears to be a operation purportedly promoting villa rental and sales. Clickable links to their website have been placed into the Bali article and subsequently removed by myself and other editors. Both the User:Marine and User:Crewman appear to be accounts operated on the same campaign. The edit content is identical from both users and they have been placing the covert url link into the Bali article text. The link points to pbali dot com. The website has no contact details provided for the promoters other than a browser page contact form. I am wondering if they have been active elsewhere on WT as well.

The covert link edit is written as follows and inserted into the article copy.:

<span class="plainlinks">[http://www.pbali dot com/ <span style="color:#000000;font-weight:normal; text-decoration:none!important; background:none!important; text-decoration:none;">Bali Villas</span>]

This is an example of one edit.

It then displays as; Bali Villas and becomes clickable if rolled over -- (the bolding is my own emphasis).

The covert link points to pbali dot com when it is supplied with a correctly formatted address.

Talk:Tajpur notes on an edit/s and west bengal scamming activity

Upon tracking a suspect tel number to another article I came across the Tajpur article today. The entire Tajpur article seems a little dubious. It has the appearance of having been established for the purpose of listing either entriely fictitious or baiting accommodation listings attributable to known listing hijackers and listing vandals associated with articles in this region. I have removed the offending number and noted that the edit histories had evidence of another scammer involved with the article. I have now applied some generalised copy editing to the article to clean it up but it is still a bit questionable. I note that on (07:46) 17 May 2009 ChubbyWimbus raised some concerns aboout this article.

Upon examination of the various articles concerned and their edit and content history it appears that the contact numbers used have been those associated with previous misleading or hijack edits in various West Bengal articles.

Today I have made edits to the article and some others today that are displaying similar lineage and number commonalities I have removed +91 33 8100291011 from Hotel Sonarbangla Resorts in the Tajpur article as this tel number has beeen listed the Rojana Beach Resorts listing in Digha and removed in an edit today for that reason. The previous listing for Safarsonhee in this Tajpur article was removed by Peterfitzgerald on 11 oct 2010). The prior Safarsonhee listing used a number 90spamfilter51115228 listed to Safarsongee Tours & Travels, Kolkata, Telephone: (033) 4004spamfilter8685, 90spamfilter51115228, Address: 9B, Esplanade , Kolkata-700069, West Bengal. The Hotel Amorabati-Bakkhali has also frequently been listed to 90spamfilter51115228 on travel websites

As I know the activities of the west bengal idiots are of interest to others I thought this may be of interest here.felix 06:40, 16 June 2011 (EDT)

Rhinocarhire dot com Removal from Local Spam Blacklist Request

Swept in from the pub

We are seeking feedback / support for the removal of rhinocarhire dot com from the Wikitravel talk:Local spam blacklist#Various Car Hire Agencies. We have for some time been in discussion with a moderator who has recommended that we use this platform in an attempt to gain support for our removal from the list by consensus. We found ourselves added to the list in September 2009 where the route cause was traced back to an external editor / SEO specialist who took it upon himself to spam wiki travel with our website. Upon discovering such practices, this person ceased to work for the company and has not done so since. We have explained our situation in detail, however the perception remains that we will try to use Wikitravel for our own benefit and SEO purposes, which I can assure the Wikitravel community is not the case. We run an honest business and were awarded Best Car Hire Website at the 2010 Travolution Awards, something that the team worked very hard towards and are very proud of. Our integrity has been questioned on Wikitravel to the extent where we have been labelled not trustworthy, something we find unjust and unfounded. There have also been references to 'fake blogs' that we know nothing about and have requested further information to fully investigate, however no further information has been supplied. We have no interest in self promotion of our business on Wikitravel and are not looking for recommendations, however being listed as spam is potentially damaging for our business. We have been punished by wiki travel for 2 years now (listed on the spam blacklist) and feel that continued listing as spam for actions carried out by a 3rd party on our behalf (unknown to us at the time) is not longer justifiable. We would welcome to feedback from the community on this matter as we will continue our pursuit for removal from the list. Many thanks. Rhinocarhire dot com. (86.29.197.231 09:23, 30 August 2011 (EDT))

Congratulations on winning the Travolution Award. It wouldn't do for an award winner like yourselves to be on a blacklist so I will remove you. If you list again you will be re-added. If you ever feel like apologising for the hours of time myself and others have volunteered to keep the guide clean while your agents have done their best to disrupt it, that would be good too. --Inas 19:04, 10 November 2011 (EST)

Can't edit

Swept in from the pub

I can't seem to be able to edit Globe-trotters talk page, since my message is refused by the spam filter. What am I doing wrong? I wanted to post: "Hi, I appreciate your help but since I was still working on the text I've been getting edit conflicts on South Limburg. That is making it quite harder and frustrating, so I'll just stop editing until you're done. Could you give me a heads up when you are? Justme 12:54, 30 July 2011 (EDT) "

As to that last problem, is there a way to indicate that you're working on something and ask others to not edit for a while? These edit conflicts really are frustrating.. Justme 12:54, 30 July 2011 (EDT)

I can't edit his page either. G-t has something on his talk page that is activating the spam filter. On edit conflicts, I think if one user is significantly editing a page, it is good practice to let them get on with it and come back later. Otherwise, as you say, edit conflicts will drive you nuts.--Burmesedays 13:02, 30 July 2011 (EDT)--Burmesedays 13:02, 30 July 2011 (EDT)
That's my fault - a spambot has been hitting the site over the past several weeks using specific CSS, so I added that CSS pattern to the blacklist. Unfortunately it looks like several user pages are using the same pattern, so I've removed it from the blacklist. -- Ryan • (talk) • 13:57, 30 July 2011 (EDT)
Thanks. I'm done with South Limburg, so you can just continue editing there Justme. --globe-trotter 14:14, 30 July 2011 (EDT)
