Wikitravel uses the MediaWiki Wiki software created for Wikipedia, with some minuscule local modifications. MediaWiki is written in the PHP language and uses MySQL for database storage.

Wikitravel.org is owned and paid for by founders Evan and Maj and the server is hosted on a shared commercial Web-hosting service. As of March 2005, our network service can handle a little more than 20 times our current bandwidth requirements (300Gb/mo compared to 14Gb/mo for Feb), and about 50 times our current disk space requirements.

Note that Wikitravel is run independently and does not use the servers, administrative staff or funds of the Mediawiki Foundation.
