Users with an OpenID account, or an account on any of the Wikitravel:language versions of Wikitravel can log into any other Wikitravel language version with that account.

The steps are listed below; the term home wiki refers to the wiki you contribute to most often; the local wiki is the wiki you want to login to.

If you don't already have an account on the local wiki

  1. Go to Special:OpenIDLogin on the local wiki.
  2. Enter the address of your user page on your home wiki (if you're reading this, it's probably English). This can be either the full url of the page (like http://wikitravel.org/en/User:Evan) or the Interwiki format (like en:User:Evan).
  3. You'll be redirected briefly to your home wiki, and you may get asked to log in to your home wiki, and to allow the software to share your information. Do those things.
  4. When you return to the local wiki, you may be asked to choose a new user name.
  5. In the future, you can go to Special:OpenIdLogin and you should be able to skip most of the confirmation steps.

If you already have an account on the local wiki

If you already have an account on the local wiki, you can convert it so you can log into it with OpenID.

  1. Go to Special:Userlogin on the local wiki, and log in to the local wiki account with your username and password as usual.
  2. Go to Special:OpenIDConvert on the local wiki (respectively localized pages like de:Spezial:OpenIDConvert).
  3. Enter the address of your user page on your home wiki (if you're reading this, it's probably English). This can be either the full url of the page (like http://wikitravel.org/en/User:Evan) or the Interwiki format (like en:User:Evan).
  4. You'll be redirected briefly to your home wiki, and you may get asked to log in to your primary account, and to allow the software to share your information. Do those things.
  5. When you return to the local wiki, it will be confirmed.
  6. You can log out of your local wiki account by going to Special:Userlogout.
  7. In the future, you can go to Special:OpenIDLogin and you should be able to skip most of the confirmation steps. You shouldn't ever have to go to Special:OpenIDConvert again.

Q & A

Why do I log in using the address of my user page?
This single-signon system uses a technology called OpenID. In the OpenID world, you identity is linked to an URL. For Wikitravel, your identity URL is your user page.
Can I log in to Wikitravel Shared or en using an OpenID from another Web site like MyOpenID, GetOpenID, TypeKey, or ClaimID
Yes. You can log in to a Wikitravel wiki with an ID from another site or service.
Can I log in to an OpenID-aware Web site like LiveJournal or Zooomr with my Wikitravel ID?
Yes. Just use your User: page address as your ID.
What's the ultimate vision here?
To get the login-register-login-again cycle out of the way of people who want to help out. Eventually people will be able to log in to Wikitravel using OpenID accounts from sites like Wikimedia, Wikia, WikiHow, and other MediaWiki sites as well as Movable Type and LiveJournal. And that Wikitravellers can use their Wikitravel IDs to log into those other sites as well.
Can I log in with my Yahoo! account?
Yes, using idproxy.net.
Can I log in with my AOL or AIM account?
Yes, using your AIM screen name. Just use "http://openid.aol.com/yourscreenname" as the OpenID, lowercasing all the words and leaving out any blank spaces.
