In the weird catastrophes of 25 November 2004, the server we ended up on at Canaca turned out to have pretty crummy PHP support (CGI interface, no Turck or Zend Optimizer -- see http://wikitravel.org/phpinfo.php for a full info page). I've scheduled some time with them to move the site to a more PHP-friendly computer this weekend.

There will also be a lot of file-upbacking and data-outdumping and all that fun stuff. Canaca quoted me 2 hours for their work, and I'll estimate about the same amount of time on my side, for a total of about 4 hours of downtime. It's going to require a change of IP addresses, but since wikitravel.org will be on the same DNS server, there shouldn't be much of a propagation delay. Therefore, we should be back on the air by 00:00 UTC.

Yes, this is the third scheduled work in a week, but there's a pretty serious backlog of sysadmin problems to deal with. Hopefully we'll end up with a faster, more responsive Wikitravel. (Note also: in the next couple of weeks there should be some fixes to the caching-related bugs noted on Wikitravel:Bug reports 1.3.5.) --Evan 07:40, 9 Feb 2005 (EST)

Scheduled downtime 12 Feb 2005 18:00 UTC

Mirrors list

I started Wikitravel:Mirrors to collect some of the known Wikitravel mirror sites. --Evan 09:08, 9 Feb 2005 (EST)

Valentine's Day

Any ideas for something special to do for the upcoming Valentine's Day? --Evan 09:18, 9 Feb 2005 (EST)

Credits block

Is anyone smart enough about HTML and CSS to figure out why the credits block at the end of each page scrolls off to infinity on the right? I really want to fix it. --Evan 09:35, 9 Feb 2005 (EST)

in main.css you have to get rid of the following line: --JanSlupski 09:52, 9 Feb 2005 (EST)
head:first-child+body #footer li { white-space: nowrap; }
That did it! So, since this is wrapping correctly now, I've set up MediaWiki so all credits are shown. --Evan 11:08, 9 Feb 2005 (EST)

Upgrade for today

I'm late by about 15 minutes on my estimate, but the work needed for tonight is done. Wikitravel is now running MediaWiki 1.3.10, and the move from /language/article/title to /language/title seems to be close to complete. I have to change the interwiki prefixes in the database, but that doesn't require the db to be offline. So, please alert me to bugs but otherwise enjoy (for a few days... until the next scheduled downtime... bwahaha!). --Evan 22:16, 9 Feb 2005 (EST)
