Wikitravel Press publishes first books

It's been a long road to get here, but today I have the immense pleasure of announcing the publication of the first two books from Wikitravel Press:

We have a solid pipeline of more books coming up soon and, thanks to data from OpenStreetMap, we'll also be upgrading and creating many new great maps for Wikitravel: see Wikitravel talk:How to draw a map#OpenStreetMap for the full scoop.

After extensive discussions on shared:Talk:Advertising policy, we have also launched advertisements in the right sidebar, as you can see on this page. These are only visible on those articles included in the books above (that is, Singapore and Chicago districts), so the rest of your Wikitravel browsing experience is unaffected.

I'm happy to field any questions, bouquets, brickbats or bug reports about the books, pricing, ads, technology etc, but please do take a peek at the FAQ first. If you'd like to join our mailing list or propose your own guide, take a look at Contact. Jpatokal 23:06, 31 January 2008 (EST)

I'm really glad that we're at this point too. It's been a goal of the Wikitravel project since day one to create printed guidebooks, and I'm glad that we've finally reached a point where the quality and volume of information on Wikitravel justifies making these books.
Thanks to everyone who's made Free travel books possible. --Evan 09:49, 1 February 2008 (EST)
I just wanted to chime in and say how great it is to see our dream of providing up-to-date printed travel guides become a reality. We've come a long way from a crazy idea on a Thailand beach and it was only possibly because of the great community of travellers who shared our frustration with traditional travel guides and knew we could do better! Thanks everyone! Maj 12:19, 7 February 2008 (EST)
