Get in

This is the easiest region of Newfoundland to reach, whether by air or sea.

By Boat

Many visitors still prefer the classic road trip. Following the Trans-Canada Highway you can reach Newfoundland by driving to North Sydney, Nova Scotia and taking the Marine Atlantic ferry to Port-aux-Basques. From this southwest corner of Newfoundland you have the entire island in front of you to explore.

A secondary option is to take the Labrador Straits Ferry from Blanc Sablon, Quebec to St. Barbe on the island's northern peninsula.

By Air

Western Newfoundland has 3 airports, 2 regional and 1 international.

Deer Lake Regional Airport - YDF - located 35 minutes north of Corner Brook. In order to reach Deer Lake you will have to route through either Halifax or Toronto first.

St. Anthony Airport - is the smallest airport in the region. This airport will require routing through St. John's to reach it from the mainland, but has many connections to Labrador.

Stephenville International Airport - YJT - located 45 minutes from the city of Corner Brook, and just minutes from downtown Stephenville, the region's second largest centre. Stephenville Int'l will require you to route through either St. John's or Toronto with Provincial Airlines or Sunwing, respectively.

Get around

  • Cow Head Lighthouse, Cow Head, Newfoundland (Travel across the thin strip of land which connects the old summer island and the mainland 'winter town.' You will see signs that point you to the lighthouse trail.). A 10 minute hike with some stairs will bring you to the renovated lighthouse. Very cool as it is open and you can climb up into the old lantern room and get a beautiful view of the Gulf of St.Lawrence. Free.
