Welcome, TrekEarth members
This article is specifically for TrekEarth community members who are interested in the opportunity to showcase their work on Wikitravel.
Exposure Wikitravel gets over 300,000 daily visits from users all around the world. Having your pictures featured in Wikitravel articles gives you a great opportunity to show your art to the wider world. Everybody loves pictures and they certainly make travel articles look more attractive. A good picture in the article is immediately noticed by a reader. Our London article is a great example.
Moreover, your pictures could be featured on Wikitravel's Main Page which is our most popular page and gets over 15,000 daily views.
And of course, the appreciation and exposure run both ways; since the Wikitravel community is much larger than TrekEarth, we hope that photographers around the world will follow Wikitravel links to your TrekEarth gallery and become a part of the Trek community as well.
You can create an user account with links to your professional website or online portfolio. In this way, people interested in your pictures would be able to easily get in touch with you and see your other pictures. Here is a sample user account who is a member on both TrekEarth and Wikitravel.
You can create your own Wikitravel Gallery that will showcase all the pictures you uploaded to Wikitravel. Please attribute all of them. That means that you can link them back to your website, online portfolio or TrekEarth gallery where interested people could see more of your work. Please see here to see how to attribute the image.
If you would like to create a gallery of all the pictures you uploaded to Wikitravel on your user page, please use the format below:
Joining Wikitravel doesn't mean that you will have to share your pictures here. It is absolutely voluntary. It's your decision if you would like to share your art with Wikitravelers. We would be delighted to have you here!
Images uploaded to Wikitravel are subject to Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 (CC-by-SA 3.0) license and can be redistributed. That means that every picture that you upload to Wikitravel can be reused on different websites that have the same license as Wikitravel (for example Wikipedia). However, everybody who reuses Wikitravel pictures will have to attribute its authors. Attribution takes the form of clearly specifying who the image creator is and of linking back to the original picture source (your website or TrekEarth gallery). Remember, after uploading a picture to Wikitravel you are still the author of that image and you own all the copyrights. Also, Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license only affects the pictures that you upload to Wikitravel and not the other ones that you have on TrekEarth.
How to upload pictures on Wikitravel
We upload pictures to Wikitravel Shared, which is a central coordination point and a shared repository for images and other media for all language versions of Wikitravel. Since Wikitravel Shared is a different website you will be asked to create a separate account for Wikitravel Shared and for Wikitravel. Please use this page to upload pictures. You can read the instructions how to do it.
After you upload your picture you can add it to a relevant Wikitravel article (article of the place where the picture was taken). Please check out the article first and see if there is a space for any additional picture. If you think that your picture would make a good addition to our article, please plunge forward and add it there. The picture can be added to every language version of that article (provided different language versions exist). For example: Lacoste- street view picture was added to our Lacoste article on English, French and Dutch Wikitravel.
