Vardø is a village in Finmark. It is the easternmost point in Norway and, strange as it may seem, it lies east of Istanbul!

Get in

It's a port on the Hurtigrute and a quick visit to the fort can just be managed on the southbound voyage.

Get around

See

The fort is impressive but has never fired a shot in anger - only as a welcome for the return of the sun in February after the season of continual darkness.
