Wow! Thanks for all your contributions to [[Turkey]]. I guess we're a little late with the official welcome, but here goes:

Hello Vidimian! [[Wikitravel:Welcome, newcomers|Welcome]] to [[Wikitravel:About|Wikitravel]].

To help get you started contributing, we've created a [[Wikitravel:Tips for new contributors|tips for new contributors]] page, full of helpful links about [[Wikitravel:policies and guidelines|policies and guidelines]] and [[Wikitravel:Manual of style|style]], as well as some important information on [[:shared:Copyleft|copyleft]] and basic stuff like [[Wikitravel:How to edit a page|how to edit a page]]. If you need help, check out [[Wikitravel:Help]], or post a message in the [[Wikitravel:travellers' pub|travellers' pub]]. If I can be of any help, don't hesitate to ask. -- [[User:OldPine|OldPine]] 19:55, 12 February 2008 (EST)

Thank you. I've been reading Wikitravel for a long time but I've recently started writing seriously. I guess I can find out how to do but thanks for your suggestions anyway.--[[User:Vidimian|Vidimian]] 20:38, 12 February 2008 (EST)

Thanks for all of your cleanups and updates to add [[Template:isPartOf]] and WikiPedia links. One tip - [[Template:isPartOf]] is preferred to [[Template:isIn]] since it doesn't require any escaping, meaning that something like <nowiki>{{isPartOf|South (United States of America)}}</nowiki> is totally valid. -- [[User:Wrh2|Ryan]] • ([[User talk:Wrh2|talk]]) • 20:44, 19 February 2009 (EST)

: No problem! I just happen to have some free time. I prefer isin over ispartof just because it's shorter and quicker to type, but I'll try to use ispartof more often from now on.--[[User:Vidimian|Vidimian]] 20:48, 19 February 2009 (EST)

: I think it's pretty much OK. I especially liked your selection of "other destinations" - may [[Ephesus]] and [[Pamukkale]] added as other destinations too if they won't clutter the map? D400 -the highway running along the Med coast- may also be added, it possesses some touristical importance and right now it looks like there is no major highway along the length of a third of that coast. Just adding a line along the coast would do that fine. And there is a typo at ''Doğebeyazıt'' - it should be Doğ'''u'''beyazıt.--[[User:Vidimian|Vidimian]] 04:59, 8 June 2009 (EDT)

Destination of the month
I wanted to say thank you very much for all your help with regionalisation discussion and implementation, particularly for southeastern Europe. Absolutely invaluable. You are probably aware of our [[Wikitravel:Regions_Map_Expedition|mission to conquer the world]] :), and you will see that after the recent push, there is very little [[Wikitravel:Regions_Map_Expedition#European_countries|left to do in Europe]]. Indeed, there is relatively little left to do period, and the end is in sight for what was a truly mammoth task. Your help is especially appreciated in this field, as there are few Wikitravellers willing to to do the rather unglamorous region-related work.--[[User:Burmesedays|Burmesedays]] 09:29, 27 April 2010 (EDT)

: It is a pleasure for me to help on regionalizing work :). Yes, I am well aware of the expedition, and in fact I've tried to do a couple of Turkish regions maps (not really related to this particular "conquering the world" project at the moment) but just couldn't figure out how to use Inkscape in the end, so I guess I won't be able to help with actual drawing of the maps, at least in a foreseeable future. As to what I can do/have done to help the expedition, as you possibly have already noticed, I try to join discussions on regionalizing whenever I spot them on recent changes or the expedition page (so those "see discussion" links next to the country names are really useful!) if I feel like joining the discussion; and I try to clean up country articles after the regionalization is implemented (descriptions, moves, redirects, breadcrumbs etc). Is there any particular discussion or particular regionalization work I can help at the moment? – [[User:Vidimian|Vidimian]] 09:51, 27 April 2010 (EDT)

::As for discussion, I think we are almost there, bar for small islands.

::*Two major countries which may still present some issues are [[Talk:Portugal#Regions|Portugal]] (been a problem child for a long time) and [[Panama]] (I think there are too many proposed regions - they outnumber the city articles).

::*[[Guatemala]] is a major outstanding country - the regions seem sensible but I have no idea where the borders should be set. Additionally the country article is in a bit of a state.

::*I have just finished [[Slovakia]] and I am sure the regions could use some better descriptions etc....--[[User:Burmesedays|Burmesedays]] 11:35, 27 April 2010 (EDT)

:::I have pushed on with the Bosnia map as per Stefan's scheme at [[Talk:Bosnia and Herzegovina#Regions]], and ought to have it finished within a day or 2. If you wanted to start the regionalisation work as per that scheme, then the timing would be excellent. I will chip in as well of course but help would be much appreciated. --[[User:Burmesedays|Burmesedays]] 00:59, 3 May 2010 (EDT)

Eindhoven is dominated by industrial development as the city's history is inextricably linked to electronics giant Philips, and to a lesser degree, DAF. Although those industries have mostly disappeared, they have left the city a rich industrial heritage and a lot of museums. In addition, over the past decade the city has become the so-called capital of Dutch design. (more...)

– [[User:Vidimian|Vidimian]] 12:59, 8 May 2010 (EDT)

I know you like helping with this sort of thing :). I am doing a proper map for Poland (richly deserved) and am finding all sorts of articles which are more or less orphaned. A lot have come as being in the vovoidship article but not the region. I suspect few users look at the low level vovoidships, so these are close to being orphaned. I have a found a lot and am putting that right but I am sure there are more! This also means we can now have some ODs listed in the main country article - there were none. That was sad to see for country with such amazing National Parks. The map is coming together really well and will look good I think.--[[User:Burmesedays|Burmesedays]] 08:17, 15 May 2010 (EDT)

:The new map looks great, especially compared with the old one that I remember seeing, but I wish that non-contiguous "Eastern" region could be reshaped into a region with better defined borders in the process, though no big deal really. I'll take a quick look to what I can see at the moment, but due to a trip early in the tomorrow morning (and preparations thereof), I'll be offline in the coming few days, but I'll be glad to help when I return. Just for the record, these vfd'd articles can be really helpful: [[National Parks in Poland]], [[Poland:Mountains]], [[Poland:UNESCO World Heritage Sites]], [[Poland:Spas]], [[Poland:Lakes and Coastlines]]. – [[User:Vidimian|Vidimian]] 14:48, 16 May 2010 (EDT)

::Oh my. This proves to be harder than I initially thought. And most subregions have up to 9 cities anyway, which means we shouldn't really be moving cities from them to a region one level up in the hierarchy, so is there any better solution short of creating full sets of sub-sub-regions for unknown and far away lands? – [[User:Vidimian|Vidimian]] 16:14, 16 May 2010 (EDT)

:::OK, I checked all subregions (voivodships) and their subarticles (if exist), and, as far as national parks are concerned, all are listed in the highest level regions of Poland, so a big applause to you! As I can see from a quick look, some subregions and possibly many city and OD articles need their breadcrumbs fixed though, I'll try to take care of them when I have more time. – [[User:Vidimian|Vidimian]] 16:32, 16 May 2010 (EDT)

== Flemish ==

You're right, Flemish is not a language, the only official language of Flanders in Dutch. But the Dutch in Flanders is pronounced differently, that's why Flemish people tend to call it "Flemish". However, you're right that we dont have to complicate readers with these linguistic details. --[[User:Globe-trotter|globe-trotter]] 07:17, 19 June 2010 (EDT)

:Yes, I've made that change after taking a look at relevant Wikipedia articles (plus, it would be silly and potentially confusing to have one "Flemish" in the article while throughout the article elsewhere it is referred to as "Dutch"). What would you think about having a sole mention of "Flemish" in [[Flanders#Talk]], such as "''... is Dutch, locally called Flemish...''", would it be helpful for travellers or would it be needless hairsplitting? Having such a mention may preempt possible future edit wars based on linguistic (over)sensitivities. – [[User:Vidimian|Vidimian]] 07:28, 19 June 2010 (EDT)

Hi,

I was a bit surprised to find that after adding a listing to the Istanbul/Galata Eat section, it disappeared, only to be present in the history section. How odd! Looking through the bug reports, it looked to me as though it may be a recurrent problem after an admin edits a template. Do you agree?

The previous anonymous user did the wrong thing by simply erasing part of the climate section of Eskişehir, which looks like vandalism.

If you do not mind and object to me editing, which I do rarely because I only contribute (very infrequently) if I know the subject well or if I have updates avialble – in this case about climates.

The phenomenon of winter rain is false because it is not a feature of the climate of Eskişehir or indeed most of the interior and high Anatolian plateau, it also not a feature of Istanbul or the Blcak Sea coast for that matter. This is only restricted to those places in Turkey which do have a mediterranean climate . During winter, precipitation is mostly in the form of snow (I live there ''ve Türkçe konuşabiliyorum''), because Eskişehir despite being in western Turkey, has a slightly harsher winter and indeed slightly drier climate than Ankara to its east. This is due to to its topography apart from its altitude.

Kindest regards

I'm sorry to bug you with this, but could you please take a look at the [[Daejeon]] article is you have a moment? I'm hoping I'm requesting this in the right way. There's an issue there with [[User:Felix505]] initiating an edit war and I'd much rather call in third-party abritration than play along. I felt the need to revert a portion of his intial edits as they changed the article from correct to incorrect in more than a few places. Other edits were petty, right down to the old English vs American English chestnut. Regardless, he has since re-reverted those and taken now to reverting the revisions and any further work or additions to the page. Attempts to discuss this civilly with him have unfortunately failed. Please see his talk page for the discussion (I realise parts of that discussion should really be on the article talk page, and I guess parts will have to be moved over once things are settled - my bad on that :/)

I've included a comment on the Discussion page for the article listing some of the most recent edits. For the record, I actually live in the city at present (short term stay) and it's clear to me at least from the edits he has not ever been there (I'm actually going to suspect he has not visited the country itself given a comment about the country's national public transport links). Anyhow, the last accurate version of the page, in my opinion, is this: http://wikitravel.org/wiki/en/index.php?title=Daejeon&oldid=1635833

:No worries, I'm right on my way checking that out (and I see [[User:ChubbyWimbus|ChubbyWimbus]] already gave a shot at [[Talk:Daejeon]]), but I'll need to go through the versions and those lengthy discussions first. I'll too reply at [[Talk:Daejeon]].

Hey V, just wanted to see what you thought about

*My edits after describing the tourism development in [[Kabak]] in more general terms. I took out the negative references, but should I also take out the positive ones too, to be more balanced?

*I made a new article on [[Aphrodisias]], since there was nothing there before. How does it look?

*I've made some extensive edits on [[Bergama]]. How are those?

Please, be as critical as possible, since I am still relatively new at this.

Hello Vidimin, sorry, i made a mistake when i described Offenburg being located at the Rhine Valley. Its located at the Upper Rhine, which is not the same. I corrected this and deleted your link to the Rhine Valley. There is no atricle to the Upper Rhine so far.

Sorry, for putting the two different terminologies regarding Eastern Christianity in the country quickbar of Turkey. Eastern Rite is indeed the correct name, for the different (and independent) sects of Eastern Christianity. While I was clarifying the actual religious makeup of the Christians in the country, I certainly did not intend to confuse the readers even more. (Unfortunately for the readers, some of non-Eastern Orthodox churches such as the Syriac and Coptic churches use the term "Orthodox".) Again sorry.

Flyax enjoyed the song, and when I asked him about the two Greek lines that are supposedy in the Turkish lyrics, he thought they were Turkish because he thought he heard the word kemanlar (violins). Would you clarify that? (In my opinion, I find the song nice.) --[[User:CurvyEthyl|CurvyEthyl]] 17:51, 24 January 2012 (EST)

Hello Vidiaman, I am the user Faust 1976, however, I have forgotten my password and my password and in fact, the email address I used to become a member (I have a couple, initially used for separate purposes, but later I got less tidy in that). Is it possible to get me a login again, so that I may request some further assistance in the name of privacy? Please leave me a rely here, preferably with a way to contact you so that we might discuss some details privately? Thanks in advance.--[[User:81.68.73.34|81.68.73.34]] 16:16, 18 March 2012 (EDT)

:Hi Faust. I'm sorry that I can't help you with this I've been scanning various help pages for the last half an hour and couldn't come up with something that could help you. We have two active bureaucrats ([[User:Wrh2]] and [[User:Peterfitzgerald]]) and at least one sysop ([[User:LtPowers]]) who is extremely experienced in Mediawiki who ''may or may not'' be able to help you. If you need to access me through e-mail, first get another account (perhaps a throw away one), register an e-mail with it (no one will see it, don't worry) and then you will see a link saying "E-mail this user" on the toolbox to the end of the left navigation bar when you look at my user or talk page. By clicking it, you can send an e-mail to me, but please notify me here when you do, as I don't check my e-mail very often. – [[User:Vidimian|Vidimian]] 03:30, 19 March 2012 (EDT)

+
Thanks for the idea Vidiaman. I will email Wrh2 with my request, since a second request would involve him anyway (I wanted to contact him at first, but without a means to log in I could not edit his page, nor send him an email. It never occured to me hat I would be able to do so with an account.). Should he be unresponsive, I might knock on your door again. Thanks again! --[[User:ThrowAwayOne|ThrowAwayOne]] 08:39, 19 March 2012 (EDT)

:::Oh, okay. Thanks for the link to the pub discussion. I somehow failed to see that "E-mail password" button on [[Special:Userlogin]] at the first time I was checking it. I left a note on [[Wikitravel:How to create a user account]] that lost passwords are not possible to recover just in case — changes to wording or possibly a better help page to note it are welcome. – [[User:Vidimian|Vidimian]] 16:16, 19 March 2012 (EDT)

Destination of the month

Hull is a quintessential northern English city, and one which has undergone a transformation in recent years. Situated on the Humber Estuary in Yorkshire, the town has some very interesting historical sites, a fascinating museum district, and a multitude of places to eat, drink and sleep. (more...)

Off the beaten path

Eindhoven is dominated by industrial development as the city's history is inextricably linked to electronics giant Philips, and to a lesser degree, DAF. Although those industries have mostly disappeared, they have left the city a rich industrial heritage and a lot of museums. In addition, over the past decade the city has become the so-called capital of Dutch design. (more...)
