Sex tourism, for this discussion, is travel that includes engaging in sexual activities which might be illegal or less available in other areas.

Sometimes the term "sex tourism" is used specifically to refer to travel for the purpose of sex with children. We very strongly prefer not to include any information on that. Note that many Western countries have laws which allow prosecution of their citizens for this, even if the act takes place in another country.

Other aspects of sex tourism would include:

  • singles bars and other pickup spots
  • gay bars
  • prostitution
  • strip clubs or other sexy shows

For some destinations, these activities are an important aspect of tourism. Where that is the case, we should provide general information, enough to let a tourist find or avoid them as he or she chooses. For example, all of the following should be described:

It is also OK to give basic information on what can be found there. Warnings about any scams practiced on tourists or particularly high risks of sexual diseases are definitely appropriate. General information telling a visitor what to expect is also OK, especially if it is not what might be expected elsewhere.

However, going into detail is not required. For example, the following would be inappropriate:

  • detailed reviews of pickup prospects in a gay bar or singles bar. It is OK to give general comments, such as one place caters to a university crowd, another is mainly blue collar.
  • details on bordellos and bars where prostitutes can be found. Again, general comments are OK; one place is high-end, another ordinary
  • pricing info for prostitution, beyond a general comment on the range in a country or city article
  • "quality" information on prostitutes in different destinations, beyond a few general comments

So, for example, in describing Lotus Road in Zhuhai, one might say that there are hordes of streetwalkers, mostly young (18 to 25), and the going rate is 200 RMB ($25 US) plus the hotel cost for a brief encounter. More detail would be inappropriate.

Note that this policy applies whether or not the sexual activity in question is legal in the destination. If it is illegal, however, the text should include warnings about legal risks.
