Have something to say about my edits to an article? Say it on that article's talk page, not here.

Script nomination on ja:

Hello Jani-san,

I'm going to use pywikipedia on the Japanese version of WT with modification; e.g. adding "/Run" pages check. Today, I submitted a request for bot approval to ja:Wikitravel:スクリプト登録依頼#Tatatabot. Would you approve it? -- Tatata 11:47, 4 January 2009 (EST)

Dear Mr. Patokaillo

it's obvious you have a lot vested in the site. you've written a couple of guidebooks and you spend A LOT of time on it. but the bottom line is, whatever you write on it is free for anyone to edit or replace if they are offering an updated or better version without getting hassled on it for really no apparent reason other than...what...a wounded ego? of all people, bureacrats (a befitting title) which you are one should be more aware of this than anyone [[1]]. i will continue to go on editing your or anyone else's work if need be and if you want to nip at my heels for some personal reason I find childish, then do as you wish. it is just unfortunate how you're turning a very good and earnest idea (Wikitravel) into something annoying and tedious. Jani, I did not block EE in regards to his behavior on his talk page. I did so in regards to his edit warring, adding abusive comments on my talk page. Unblocking him was innapropriate. This case has been discussed here, and it would be better to discuss it there than to override me for following that procedure well within the bounds of what we were discussing. --Peter Talk 03:12, 7 January 2009 (EST)

And actually, so was unprotecting. As far as I know, what I did was perfectly within the bounds of our current policy, if perhaps not explicitly sanctioned by it. Discussing first would have been a better way to deal with this disagreement. --Peter Talk 03:27, 7 January 2009 (EST)
One thing that is not explained and I want you Peter to explain it - how am I being abusive? The only reason why I 'edit war' is because you won't even give me the time of day and that really makes me mad. edmontonenthusiast [ee] .T.A.L.K. 21:20, 7 January 2009 (EST)/

Feedback Appreciated

Wow, I am flattered to be nominated. As for Colorado's Wine Country and the "purple prose," please feel free to get out the hedge clippers and trim away my excesses. Sometimes, its hard to see the edits after staring at the screen for so long, reading and rereading. If there's anything else you'd like to see added or fleshed out about the area, I can work on it so that the article doesn't end up in the slush pile. I will hunt down some maps next. Winery Placement

Hi Jani. I'm keeping abreast of the discussion about the article nomination, and would like to weigh in on the placement of the wineries. I'd rather see them listed in Colorado's Wine Country than in the break downs for individual wine communities. Won't this help the article in its comprehensiveness and further it on its way to becoming a star? Other developments: I have a map on the way from the Palisade CofC, and should have a jpeg (and permission) by Monday for submission. The other cities under Wine Regions will take a little bit of time to flesh out. WineCountryInn 15:47, 9 January 2009 (EST)Talk

Hi Jani. The map is now up at Colorado's Wine Country. WineCountryInn 19:30, 11 January 2009 (EST) Talk

Listing editor on zh

Hello Jani-san,

Someone has started hotel listing on the Chinese version of WT.[2]

I think it's nice to enable the listing editor to be working on the version. If I was admin there, I could set it up myself. Would you set it up, or just flip my sysop flag? -- Tatata 02:05, 9 January 2009 (EST)

Thanks for reverting this edit. I looked at that edit this morning and somehow convinced myself that it updated the regions to correctly match the map and marked it as patrolled - my bad. Apparently I need to start drinking stronger coffee... -- Ryan • (talk) • 22:49, 16 January 2009 (EST)

Sorry to jump in - I suspect it's a Pulp Fiction quote that, taken out of context, looks unbelievably harsh. Given the edit that was reverted it's quite funny if you get the reference, but given the fact that many people won't recognize it is something that probably requires explanation. -- Ryan • (talk) • 01:35, 17 January 2009 (EST)

Remember I mentioned in the Saudi Arabia talk page that I said Pokemon is banned in Saudi Arabia. Well this based of these articles (there was also a CNN article, but it was removed):

[3] [4] [5]

And what gives on removing that gay part in Zimbabwe, I'm warning travelers not to go there since it is illegal there and chances are gays and lesbians may get beaten up.

Also, a month ago, I added a tip for gay and lesbian travelers in the China article, since you been to China, I was wondering if can full confirm this:

China is relatively safe for gay and lesbian travelers, as China has no laws against homosexuality. However, the government currently does not recognize same-sex relationships, and homosexual related contents in the media are often censored or banned in China (the controversial film, Brokeback Mountain, is banned in China because of this). Homosexuality is still taboo in China and many Chinese would not like discuss homosexual related topics. Regardless, violence against gays and lesbians are relatively rare. --Dark Paladin X 23:59, 27 January 2009 (EST)

Too late. I reverted it before you even commented. Texugo 23:13, 30 January 2009 (EST)
I would not panic about it. The reversion is justified because only Logged On Users should be editing their own user pages. It is quite appropriate to revert the page, and possibly appropriate to ban the IP for the rest of the duration of the user ban too! Guilty until proven innocent, in this case, I say. Perhaps we should consider this to be included in any user ban policy too. In any case he did promise not to edit - for a month. - Huttite 23:24, 30 January 2009 (EST)

Pullman Hotel

Hi Jpatokal,

Yes, I removed this hotel because it is not even remotely close to the Sukhumvit Road area. I did add a note explaining this in the Discussion area of the Sukhumvit article, in which I also mentioned that I added two other 5 star hotels along Sukhumvit Road which were missing from the article, plus removed one other - The Amari Watergate - which is also not in the Sukhumvit area. Small bit of help required

I made a mistake I'm wondering if you can help me to rectify. I meant to add a new section in the shopping area of Bangkok/Silom for "Malls" but when I tried to do this, it just added a small bullet point in the main shopping intro area. Without any obvious way to undo this, the nearest way I could find to delete this was to delete the text in the bullet point - but this didn't quite work, and so now there's a stray bullet point left hanging above the "Markets" heading! How can this be removed?

Incidentally, what I was doing (and still intend to do) was to add a new section on Malls to include The Silom Complex, Central Silom and The Thanyia Center. The former of that list would be moved from it's current location in "Stores".

Thanks! Dantilley 23:59, 4 February 2009 (EST)

Layover in SIN city

LH/SQ changed my flight and therefore I now arrive with some buggers in early March at 6 AM in SIN. Do you have a tip for a nice breakfast place in town to chill a bit (nice view)? Thanks in advance and have a good time in Laos. jan 14:22, 18 February 2009 (EST)

Jani, i didn't expected to see you in Changi at 6 AM ;-) I stay from 7th March 6AM until 8th March afternoon in Singapore with mum & sis to meet Singapore National Parks @ Fort Canning Rise. They open from 9AM onwards and the sunrice restaurant their opens at the same time. A mixture of Western & Asian food would be great to get a taste and not always the same hotel breakfast sausages... Please do not remove changes that were already talked about. Look at the discussion page before you edit. the proposal to change the regions in israel was up for disccusion for over 2 weeks, and was also posted on the pub discussions to make sure no one objects to this change. As no one objected to update and improve this value, i see no reason to delete things. If you have any objections, please use the discussion page?

i'm sorry to say, but your behavior is a bit rude. the subject was brought up in a public disccussion on the ISRAEL value page, and also posted on the public disscussions. i asked for any objections. i cannot make people comment. no one objected for over a week, and therefore, i changed it. this is the way wiki works, people change and improve values, they do not need your personal consent, its ment for everyone to edit, as long as the information is true and valuable. and as i said, i've also posted it in public a long time before i edited, to make sure no problems like this will occur. if you had or have any problems with my edits, you could and can use the disscussion page. you did not, instead you simpley delete everything. you didn't bother to disscuss it with anyone but yourself and you didn't even had any objection to the actual text. i doubt thats considered working under the rules of wiki, and i doubt its contributing to the wikitravel. i ask you again to stop discouraging people from editing, especually after it was done properly.

i don't know why, but you seem to ignore the fact that there is no objection ! you offer to open this for debate on the discussion page of Israel... i already did it 2 weeks ago. as you said yourself, if there are any objections, there should be a discussion about it first before the edit. that is why i opened it for discussion prior to editing. no one objected, no one objects now either. if it was opened up for discussion and no one decided to object, you cannot claim that its a debated topic that needs a consensus. therefore, i see no reason to remove the improvement. either everyone so far agree with the change, or no one cares. either way - this topic is not disputed.

and furthermore, i agree, lets not turn it into a you-VS-me, think about what contributes to wikitravel most and please do not delete an edit that wasn't disputed and didn't get any objections even when it was posted publicly on the discussion page 2 weeks prior to the actual editing. this is exacly what u offered - it was already done, and apperantly, the new edit is a consensus.

of course. thats why i opened it up for discussion prior to the edit, to make sure no one have any strong objections towards it. but please, only if they object to the actual change in the array of regions and for a reasonable reason !! not if another person simpley objects the idea of change in fear that it might not be a consensus, without even addressing the actual information that was changed. on a personal note, i don't understand why you seem very eagered to delete this new version instead of helping to improve this value. If you wish to keep this value under the consensus lines (as do I), it doesn't mean you can't support an improvment and helping it pass, as long as it provides true and accurate data and doesn't offend anyone (and so far, it doesn't). its a bit redicoules that after i made sure no one has any objections, you wish to delete it claming that its not a consensus because no one argued with me about it on the discussion page. also, your "request for comments" was more of a pointless slander. if you have any problem with the devision or graphical design, you can imrpove it instead of deleting. thats how wiki gets better. Also, if you expect to have an orgenized county devision in the ISRAEL value like in other countries, you probably don't know Israel well then. Israel isn't devided into clear official devisions. NO region in israel has a 100% clear geographical border, there are many diffrent devisions of the regions, and all of them overlaps each other. That is how Israel is built, if you prefer the orgenized european or chinese methods, i suggest you'll skip Israel in your travels, or send an anrgy letter to the Israeli government?

"Offbeat Guides"

Hi. I actually deleted those listings on purpose because they didn't have a phone number or address. Would you be able to put that information in?

I've tried looking them up and couldnt find any other information, which is why I deleted those listings. Maybe you'll have better luck!

I'm not sure about that Samara move, I would have no objects if there wasn't already a Samara, but there is, and having just a accented á to distinguish the two, doesn't really seem right to me. --Stefan (sertmann) Talk 22:19, 30 March 2009 (EDT)

Thank you for your comments. I only changed the spellings from British English to American English because I wanted to follow the wikitravel style manual as closely as possible.

I will be sure to follow your advice about the currency listings and temperature measurements. I apologize for deleting the section headers; I didn't think it was visually appealing to have a bunch of empty sections. But I understand that people will want to fill it in if they see that it is empty.

From now on, I will be sure to explain my changes in the discussion sections of the city.

Cricket in India

Test matches are always international. And ODIs are One Day Internationals, different from test matches. ODIs are 50 ovs per innings, test matches are 5 day 2 innings a side Upamanyuwikitravel( Talk )( Travel ) • 10:29, 1 April 2009 (EDT)

yeah, you're right, people outside the 10 cricket playing nations won't have a clue. I merely wanted to draw your attention to the fact that you had deleted the ODI reference. Upamanyuwikitravel( Talk )( Travel ) • 07:15, 2 April 2009 (EDT)
Er, I'm a little confused. Do we write the cricket section assuming that people who come to watch cricket follow it? Or do we explain stuff in detail, so that everyone can follow the cricket section of the travel guide. Upamanyuwikitravel( Talk )( Travel ) • 07:15, 2 April 2009 (EDT)
Yup, you're right, but cricket is probably the most confusing sport in the world, and unless you've grown up with it all your life, it's nearly impossible to follow. Upamanyuwikitravel( Talk )( Travel ) • 07:42, 3 April 2009 (EDT)

Collapsible Listings

Some of us have been discussing the use of collapsible listings as a solution to the issue of long consulate/embassy lists. When investigating how to make a template for this, I saw that you had already taken a stab at it. First, I'd like to invite your input in the discussion above. Second, what's the status of this template? Do you think it's possible to make it work on WT? Are there other ways of achieving this? I noticed that the Metadata Tables for images already incorporate a collapsible component, but I haven't found the code for it yet. Thanks. --Jtesla16 21:15, 7 April 2009 (EDT)

Tokyo Disney Resort Map

Tokyo Disney Risort Map.png

Your map of Tokyo Disney Resort is flawed. Not only is it geographically inaccurate, it is also outdated, as it does not show the Tokyo Disneyland Hotel or the Cirque du Soleil Theatre. I suggest you either create a new map or import this one from Wikipedia: Jonathan 784 12:03, 21 May 2009 (EDT)

Kyoto Districts

I've added a couple of notes to Talk:Kyoto on the matter of moving to district sub-pages. Please let me know what you think. Since I have exhausted my limited travel experience contributions to wikitravel, I recently found this new Wiki started in October 08. [7] They have few contributors at this time, but due to the topic, I expect they will grow fairly fast. I volunteered to be an Administrator, more like janitor. However, I do have some good things to contribute there. They are plagued by the dreaded spambot. Is blocking them the only solution, or do you have magic cure you could share with me? A while back I suggested you save some coins from your trips in Mylar flips, to avoid scratches. The sponsor of this wiki is PCGS. I can tell you, it does not get any better than them when it comes to grading and encapsulating coins. If you have saved any World Coins, I am sure they would appreciate the images. Stop by for a visit, Likely I will be making you feel right at home. Any comments would be appreciated. It is all about money. 2old 12:46, 27 May 2009 (EDT)

Daisen vs. Mount Daisen

I'm not sure where to ask this, but you are familiar with these things, so I figured I'd ask you: I was thinking about starting a page for Daisen city however, I know that Wikitravel likes to list mountains as travel destinations, so Mount Daisen should have a page... Most of the things that I have seen listed to do in the city are on or related to the mountain, so I was wondering if there was a rule with that. More specifically: If I start a page, should I create a page for the mountain or the city or should they both have a page (knowing that the pages would likely be nearly identical)? Sorry if that's a dumb question, but if I start a page, I know it's best to create the page that will be used. ChubbyWimbus 22:07, 16 June 2009 (EDT)

Thanks for the suggestion! I guess I'll make it a city page then! ChubbyWimbus 22:40, 16 June 2009 (EDT)

Follow-up question regarding placement of car parking articles

Hello again...Thank you for your suggestion on the placement of my car park articles. In looking at the different "(city)#By plane" sections, it appears that these are for travellers who are arriving at the specified airport, whereas car park information is almost exclusively going to be useful only to departing travellers. This makes me think that there must be a better place to put them, or that there might be a benefit in creating a category for car park information at airports around the world. What do you think? Or can you suggest someplace that might be more appropriate for this information? Thanks again.  :-)

Stefanchou 07:35, 26 June 2009 (EDT)

I was actually looking through the "usable status" articles in hopes of finding some that may be worthy of guide status. With Guanzihling, there were a few things that made it seem like an outline: there is only one listing (albeit an interesting one) in "See", the "Do" listing is somewhat of a nameless description of what is there (also only one), One "Sleep" and "Buy" listing, and nothing in the "Drink" or "Get out" sections (although the "Get out" section tends to be less important and probably easy to remedy). I won't lie and say that I have any knowledge of this destination, so if it is the sort of place that is so remote that what is listed is representative enough to call it "usable", then feel free to revert the status change.

In previous browses, I was able to find a few to upgrade and very few to move down. Today I wasn't so lucky and I only moved some down (as is typical, most were left the same, and I generally try not to move them downward). If you think this site (or any really) should not be changed, I won't argue if you decide to restore the usable tag. ChubbyWimbus 02:47, 27 June 2009 (EDT)
