Welcome, Aleksandra!
I guess you understand both Russian and German, eh? --W. Franke-mailtalk 19:34, 11 October 2012 (EDT)
Hi W.Frank! Thanks for welcoming me! I do speak English, German, French and Polish. Started learning Spanish! ( "Hola!" ). Unfortunatelly, no Russian as for now. IBAlex 19:44, 11 October 2012 (EDT)
You must be quite young then - prior to 1989, I think everyone in Poland learned some Russian at school, didn't they?
PS: Just call me "Frank" it's my rufname --W. Franke-mailtalk 12:54, 12 October 2012 (EDT)
Frank, in 70ies and 80ies nearly everybody was learning Russian at school, it changed in 90ies. Russian language is not that popular anymore in Poland, however you can still find many people speaking it. Among younger generations English, German, French and Spanish are the most popular. how are you? Glad to see a Internet brands person on wikitravel! --Snedka71 14:05, 12 October 2012 (EDT)

Hello! I'm doing good, thank you for asking. I really enjoy working on Wikitravel- a great place for all of us who love discovering new places around the world. How are you?

Good faith edits by casual editors

I realise you have a tough job battling automated spam robots and commercial touts right now, IBAlex, but I would like you to cut our casual editors (who make good faith edits by adding useful information for travellers) a little more slack.

Here's an example of the sort of edit I'm talking about.

This IP editor improved our article for the traveller by adding five separate "eat" listings (where before there were none at all) and consequently, is very unlikely to be a commercial tout. By reverting all these painstaking edits you are likely to have at least two negative effects:

1) The traveller reading the article now has no "eat" information to view

2) The casual IP editor may be discouraged from ever editing again!

In these sort of cases, I believe it's much better to let the (improperly formatted) edits stand - but mark them by perhaps adding a {{style}} template so that somebody more experienced can come back later and do a copy edit (retaining the useful information. --W. Franke-mailtalk 15:28, 15 October 2012 (EDT)

That's right, Frank! I will take your suggestion into consideration in the future! Thank you! IBAlex 17:36, 15 October 2012 (EDT)
Thanks for being so understanding, Aleksandra! --W. Franke-mailtalk 17:52, 15 October 2012 (EDT)

Request for 2 hour block of IP

We currently have an IP editor that is not willing to consult our Manual of Style [1]. I would request a 2 hour block to give the IP time to read and inwardly digest, Aleksandra.

(It is also a moot point whether the external link to the IP's own website is an appropriate warning to travellers or harassment...) --W. Franke-mailtalk 14:17, 16 October 2012 (EDT)

Dear Frank! Thank you for your message. I understand your concern but I cannot block the IP address of the other user in this situation. After reviewing the Page History it seems to me that this person is writing in good faith. Try to encourage the other user to talk about all those edits on the Discussion Page. Thank you for your understanding! IBAlex 14:38, 16 October 2012 (EDT)
I'd love to have a reasonable discussion - unfortunately you just seem to have deleted (by mistake) User talk: and with it my post (and the IP's response)! --W. Franke-mailtalk 15:30, 16 October 2012 (EDT)

Deleting a user's talk page

Thank you for restoring the talk page.

Kinda lonely around here, ain't it?

Wikitravel german

Please look at the german side.

-- Knuth 15:11, 22 October 2012 (EDT)

Knuth, thank you for your message! I will have a look at the German site right now. Please let me know if there is something particular you would like me to have a look at, thank you! IBAlex 15:15, 22 October 2012 (EDT)
I have just blocked many Spammer accounts on German Wikitravel. They have done lots of damage with inserting many unneeded external links. Thank you again for your alert! IBAlex 19:22, 22 October 2012 (EDT)

Marathi Wikitravel

Hi IBAlex,

I am user from India and would like start work on Indic languages. Pls. let me know what needs to be done to start Indic Wikitravel like Marathi Language, Bangoli language, Gujrathi language etc. Kalakar 12:19, 28 October 2012 (EDT)

Hi Kalakar! I was truly happy to get your message! That is a great news you would like to start new language version. Please get familiar with the steps on how to start a new language version and the discussion on that page . I am sending you also the language version policy that would help you get started.
Please, let me know if you also speak Hindi and would be interested in starting a WT Hindi version since it could be potentially understood by a larger number of users.
Kalakar, I am looking forward to your response. Warm regards, IBAlex 15:11, 29 October 2012 (EDT)

Recommendation of the administrator(ja)

Hello Mr. Alex. I am the administrator of the Japan Kentagon(ja's name 木更津乃風).

Recommended as an administrator of three users(ResTpeRocNY066白銀) in Japan Wikitravel. I think they are in normal activities, such as participation in discussions for the maintenance and development of this site, and there is a suitability as administrator.

Therefore, according to the rules of Japan Wikitravel, We are planning to hold a vote of administrators nominations for 14 days. Please be aware.--Kentagon 09:55, 30 October 2012 (EDT)

Dear Kentagon! Thank you for your message. I have been following all what is going on on JA WT regarding the Administrator's Nomination Discussion. IB will look closer into contributions of each candidate but from the preliminary review it looks that they benefit the JA Wikitravel community in a good way. Do I understand it correctly that you propose 3 candidates: (ResTpeRocNY066白銀), and user Kisarazu no Kaze (木更津乃風) proposes 3 following candidates: 白銀さん, NY066, ResTpeRoc? Could you please clear it up for me.
I am looking forward to the community decision on JA Wikitravel. please keep me posted. Thank you very much! IBAlex 12:24, 30 October 2012 (EDT)
Hellow! IBAlex. JA's WT is in the middle of the current selection. Since there is no dissenting votes so far, on the 19th of three candidates is determined administrator. Since selection period until November 19, Please wait...--Kentagon 09:02, 13 November 2012 (EST)

You should look at the user contributions of User:Phidias81, Aleksandra --singaporeAlice 17:41, 2 November 2012 (EDT)

Thank you for notifying me! As for now, I face difficulties deleting and blocking this user but I'm watching him and i will stay alert to every single change he/she is going to make. Anytime you see somebody suspicious, i would highly appreciate if you could let me know. Thank you! IBAlex 17:53, 2 November 2012 (EDT)
He does appear to be linking to secondary sources, which is not permitted. I'd contact him and link the policy to him. He's probably a spammer and won't care, but you never know. Always better to take a chance at rehabbing a possibly constructive contributor.--IBobi talk email 17:59, 2 November 2012 (EDT)
Done and external links taken off:) IBAlex 18:02, 2 November 2012 (EDT)

Hello, I'm not a spammer, I'm just a new user, and I was trying to add an external link related to the topic. My fault that I didn't read all the guidelines before doing it. Btw, I don't get why you think that on the page it was inappropriate to add "Ice Hotel" under the things to see (if it was you to delete it), when the field is completely empty? While on the things to do I see a commercial offer that wasn't deleted and that is even pointing to a dead link. Quite difficult to understand to me the criteria used.

Hi Phidias81! Thank you for your prompt reply, highly appreciated! The reason why we thought you could be a spammer is because we already had so many cases similar to yours and in many of them the person was a real spammer. But anyways, I apologize for the wrong assumption.
Happy to have you here on WT! In order to help you start contributing I sent you many links about WT policies and the way the listings should be formatted.
I would love to see a proper listing of "Ice Hotel"- please include something more than just an URL.
If you see any listing that in your opinion serves promotional interest, please let me know and I will take care of that.
Thank you again for your message and sorry for all the confusion. I am looking forward to your contributions! Cheers! IBAlex 18:31, 2 November 2012 (EDT)

Chinese Wikitravel

Wt zh.png

Hi Alex, on the Chinese Wikitravel, can you remove the docentheader and aboutdocent from the sidebar? Thanks. sumone10154(talk) 16:23, 4 November 2012 (EST)

Hey Sumone -- is this because it's in English? Is there a similar section in Chinese on the page? Are there docents on the ZH version, or do you think there just should not be?--IBobi talk email 14:23, 5 November 2012 (EST)
Docents are not used at all on zh. And the & lt ; symbols look ugly. sumone10154(talk) 17:41, 5 November 2012 (EST)
Do you know why docents are not used on ZH? Also, where do you see the & lt ; symbols?--IBobi talk email 18:29, 5 November 2012 (EST)
Because they never decided to use them... And the symbols are next to docentheader and aboutdocent. sumone10154(talk) 18:33, 7 November 2012 (EST)
I'm not seeing the symbols; I just see "Docents" and the link to "About docent" between the NAVIGATION and TOOLBOX sidebars.
Do you think there's a reason to remove docent functionality? Might it not be used in the future?--IBobi talk email 18:42, 7 November 2012 (EST)
I have posted a screenshot. I'm using Firefox 16.0.2 on Windows 7.
The about docent page isn't even translated into Chinese, so I find it very unlikely to be used in the future. But if you are so strongly opposed to removing it, I do not care; this isn't too important. sumone10154(talk) 16:38, 9 November 2012 (EST)

Reply to question on my user talk page

Hey Alex, I just replyed to your question on my user talk page User talk:Dangrec and I wasn't sure you'd see it there if I didn't put a comment here. Sorry, I'm not up with the WT procedure on that. Thanks, Dangrec 20:21, 5 November 2012 (EST)

Removal of map contributions

Hi Aleksandra. I'm just curious as to the reasoning behind this edit. It seems that user made a comment back in 2008 offering maps for Wikitravel, yet you have removed them. Any reason? 01:02, 7 November 2012 (EST)

Hello! Thank you for reaching out! I removed the post because links provided over there were leading to another travel guide. WT has a policy that does not allow any external links that are not primary sources. I hope you understand. Please feel free to contact me at any time. Cheers! IBAlex 12:38, 7 November 2012 (EST)

Hi Alex, i saw that you unprotected a couple of joke articles. Is there any interest? I would like to see them protected as they have been a lot of fun and i would like to see them proected in their original way. Any objection? Jc8136 05:40, 9 November 2012 (EST)

Hi there! I understand your concern but if we make those articles open to the community they can even get better, what do you think? IBAlex 15:03, 9 November 2012 (EST)
Wrong. Jokes are not best manufactured by committee. An exception to the wisdom of crowds. --singaporeAlice 15:44, 9 November 2012 (EST)
No, please see the discussion at Wikitravel talk:Joke articles. sumone10154(talk) 16:25, 9 November 2012 (EST)
After reading, I'm gratified to learn that User:Jpatokal and many others share my opinion that Joke articles tend to get worse once they've reached their zenith and should be protected. If a Billy Connolly or John Cleese turns up here and registers an account they can always create an even more polished version in their own user space and we can then discuss on the joke article's discussion page whether it should be replaced in its entirety by the new oevre. --singaporeAlice 16:43, 9 November 2012 (EST)
Here's my 2 cents. A joke article like this great Mordor one is a joke in 2 parts. 1, that there's an article about a ficticious place on a real travel site. 2, the content of the article (i.e. the specifics of the joke). Changing the content does not affect the humor of part 1. It's still funny that Mordor is a place on WT. It *could* affect the humor of part 2. Making it better or (perhaps more likely but not definitely) worse. We can editorially correct for that, however, as we can for anything.
Moreover, most people who come to that article are coming from Google search (we're #4 for the search term "mordor"!). Meaning they're probably not familiar with Wikitravel. They might read it and not even know they're at a travel wiki. But if they try to edit the article, and are blocked from doing so, they *definitely* know they are not at a travel wiki, so we lose the opportunity to convert them from a LOTR fan to a travel editor.
Therefore, especially as all those WT editors who appreciated the joke in the first place have gotten the benefit of that appreciation, I'm leaning toward taking off the protection and keeping an eye on the page, just as we do with all of them.
Thoughts?--IBobi talk email 17:47, 9 November 2012 (EST)
I do follow the logic of that. In theory. However, until and unless you appoint more admins in different time zones, new readers may instead be greeted with obscenities and adverts for Vietnamese visa on arrival services or lawnmowing companies. --singaporeAlice 17:55, 9 November 2012 (EST)
We're working on that constantly. Qualified admins are hard to find; this will take time. Meanwhile, for the most part, we're in great shape and will only get better.--IBobi talk email 18:05, 9 November 2012 (EST)
Why EXACTLY do you think these two candidates are not qualified to be admins and why EXACTLY do you think this user (EDB) is so well qualified she was promoted before she had even made her first edit on the English version of Wikitravel and without notification or discussion, never mind community approval?
{In this edit, she (EDB) deletes one Accor Group hotel 3 km from another (differently named Accor Group hotel) either not realising they are completely different hotels or that our long established policies do allow for more than one hotel in the same group!}
{While I do agree with the motivation expressed in her edit summary, in this edit the reality is that she only succeeds in replacing a primary source URL with a secondary URL! Her heart is obviously in the right place but can you seriously say that she is better qualified than the two admin candidates who have been ignored for many weeks now? And please don't get me wrong: I don't want EDB sacked, I just want you to promote some of the very few established users who are still helping out to be admins to delete the spam pages and spam user accounts while IBadmins are getting their well deserved rest!} --singaporeAlice 00:08, 10 November 2012 (EST)
Dear Frank! User EDB is of a great help for us because she is going to fully take care of IT Wikitravel which is a very important foreign language version for us. Right now she has been patrolling the EN Wikitravel so that all of us, both IB and community, can help her grow and prepare her to administrate IT WT. As you know, everybody is going first through the learning curve and that is why some of her edits might be questionable for you. As an experienced contributor, please show her your understanding. Thank you! IBAlex 20:25, 12 November 2012 (EST)

Paul, got your point. IB does not control on the weekends and during at least 12 of 24 hours Mo-Fri. I would like to keep that historic article - i guess there will never be updates to Morder ;-) - protected because i'm pretty sure it will get worse. Call me old fashioned but unprotected history with limited patrolling is inviting spambots to target such a high profile page. Jc8136 14:02, 12 November 2012 (EST)
