Hiya Evan. I miss your constant input to the site. Would you please comment on the above topic on VFD. Seems to be a conflict in policy. Once again, to you and the wife. GREAT IDEA on Wikitravel. Hopefully, it will be around, long after you and I are gone. Best wishes!!! 2old 14:39, 15 October 2007 (EDT)

Vandalism policy?

I don't know about you folks (I'm sending the same message to several), but I for one am getting sick and tired of the intentional vandalism that's going on here. I am trying to start a discussion on Wikitravel talk:Community policies as to whether something more forceful needs to be in place to deal with it. Historically, we have bent far over backwards to avoid punitive action against vandals and have simply gone in and cleaned up the messes they create. However, the frequency of vandalism is growing, and I am not convinced that we are doing Wikitravel a service by tolerating it. This said, I'm not at all sure what the "right" response is.

I'd appreciate your participation in the discussion on that talk page. Let's see if we can come up with something appropriate. -- Bill-on-the-Hill 11:40, 19 October 2007 (EDT)

Cross-lingual mediawiki typo

Hi Evan, I hope your anniversary went well!

Would you please take a look at shared:Tech:Typo_in_recent_changes_message. It is a very simple bug to fix, but it requires sysop-level access across multiple language versions—for some of which you are the sole admin. Fixing it only requires following the mediawiki links on the bug report page and replacing the existing text with:

Below {{PLURAL:$1|is '''1''' change|are the last '''$1''' changes}} in the {{PLURAL:$2|day|last '''$2''' days}}, as of $3.

Thanks! --Peter Talk 03:00, 25 October 2007 (EDT)

Hi Evan! Would you please take a look at this page. I've been waiting your answer for some months. Can I run my bot? Thanks: Dorgan 06:24, 31 October 2007 (EDT)

wikitravel : United Kingdom - 9 cities list

Hi there Evan, I have recently added to the discussion on the United Kingdom entry, regarding the 9 cities list ( under "the old city problem" headed "new for 2007" ). I have asked for a consensus on a new proposal to make the 9 cities list more accurately represent the previous consensus which was to base the 9 cities on visitor numbers. So far the majority have been For this change. There appears to be lots of people in support of the proposal. I have messaged some of the other users who were vocal in participation before, however for many of them they have not been active since 2006, which means chances are they will not reply. Also, it is worth noteing that for the current list of 9 cities, there was ever any concensus, and ironically, my recent proposal surpasses what was previously proposed in terms of number of people supporting it. Id therefore like to ask you to contribute to the discussion with a view to alter/amend the list using ur experience. --Daniel robinson 15:12, 3 November 2007 (EDT)

MediaWiki OpenID extension

Hi Evan. I have an issue getting the OpenID extension to work on my local wiki. I want to add proper i18n for it (not that difficult), and I need to know if things still work as expected after my code changes :)

Setup (following ./README in the extension directory):

  • OS: Windows Xp with Wampserver
  • Application server:
  • PHP: 5.2.3 (openssl extension added)
  • MySQL: 5.0.41-community
  • MediaWiki: 1.12alpha (r27750) (SVN head)
  • OpenID: SVN (no other extensions installed)
    • ran sql script
    • LocalSettings.php: require_once("$IP/extensions/OpenID/OpenID.php"); (at the bottom)
    • php-openid-2.0.0-rc5 (installed in D:\mediawiki\phase3\extensions\OpenID\)
    • php.ini: include_path = ".;c:\php\includes;D:\mediawiki\phase3\extensions\OpenID" (had to add the second path to make Special:OpenIDLogin display.

Now I get this error after I fill in an OpenID URL in Special:OpenIDLogin and submit it:

Fatal error: Define Auth_OpenID_RAND_SOURCE as null to continue with an insecure random number generator.
in D:\mediawiki\phase3\extensions\OpenID\Auth\OpenID\CryptUtil.php on line 52

I am not an experienced programmer; more like a monkey that learned a small PHP trick ;). I hope you can help with it. Please drop me a line on my Betawiki talk page. Cheers! siebrand 17:50, 22 November 2007 (EST)

You wrote, "The "List of Unions" needs to be broken down into regions/cities like other Wikitravel guides." I am interested to comply. Could you please guide me to a couple of appropriate examples (I have checked a few, but those models would be impossible to be replicated on this article)? You can reply to the artcile talk page, so that other editors get to use the examples as well. Cheers. Aditya Kabir 11:51, 2 December 2007 (EST)

hi, thankyou for everything you've done on wikitravel, it really is brilliant, have used it on my (financially) limited travels many times and edited it to improve the service. Anyway, I've been doing a lot of work on the East Sussex page, and was wondering if you could put me in contact with anyone who wouldn't mind making a map for the area? I've had a go myself but other than looking like a strange post modernist painting I've not come up with much... although the help file on how to make a map was useful... just my skills that aren't. thanks in advance --Prof Jack 20:32, 8 December 2007 (EST)

Geographic Co-ordinates

Evan - has WT settled on a standard way to collect and display geographic co-ordinates? There has been some discussion at about enabling OSM users to link their map data with WikiTravel pages. WP seem to be using Template:Coord and at Yellowikis we haven't got much further than using a simple <geo> tag - any thoughts? --Payo 08:46, 12 December 2007 (EST)

Hi Payo, I'm not sure if Evan is checking this page anymore. You might want to have a look at Wikitravel talk:How to draw a map#OpenStreetMap and perhaps raise your questions there; there is considerable interest here in cooperation between Wikitravel and OpenStreetMap. Sorry I can't personally be of more help in answering your question. --Peter Talk 02:30, 15 December 2007 (EST)

Hi, i would like to ask for your permission to make the phrase books into mobile readable edition. I have emailed you the detailed information. Thanks.

Can we enable $wgAllowUserCss = true;

Could you add $wgAllowUserCss = true; to the main LocalSettings.php file? This setting allows users to create their own CSS files and customise the experience a little. Personally I prefer the body text to be 125% so that's how I use it. Cheers - chmac 01:35, 30 December 2007 (EST)

Evan i have a complaint they keep vfding my articles outlines or deleting them like cjensen and 203 ip user along with oldpine and many others read this Make outlines. Don't be daunted by the task of writing all of the article about Russia -- just get it started with an outline. People are much more likely to change or add to articles than to start them from scratch. We have a bunch of handy templates for destination guides, which you can use. If you only know a teensy bit about a subject, go ahead and add it in. We currently have a huge backlog of stub articles that shouldn't really be there. It is easy to create an outline for most articles and move them to the next level. You can help there. it tells ya right there from now on i will make outlines and people can add on if they want k peace -- 13:16, 27 January 2008 (EST)

Great site

Hey Even,

I really like wikitravel. I am working on a similar site, on a different subject. I was just curious if you'd be willing to give me some pointers like how to add blogs and the voting thing and such. Thanks in advance! Michael

Evan look ip number for lone.guner can u tell me how long i'am banned for? anyway how are ya i'am fairly new and i love wikitravel and wikimedia so i make outlines in my spare time look at ip numbers 203 58 and so on they don't like me here creating stubs or isin w/p/ or outlines i need your help to convince them that i'am not a troll i'am a human being like everyone on this earth thanks --Lone.guner 17:54, 29 January 2008 (EST)

Buenos Aires

Hi Evan. We'll do a meetup of Wikipedians in Buenos Aires next February 9th. If you want to come, give me a msg at my talk page in Wikipedia or contact me in IRC. Regards, Loco085 10:20, 2 February 2008 (EST)

I notice you are the only sysop listed for this language version. The place is currently a spam heaven, can it be killed off if it is not actually going to be used? --Nick 15:31, 8 May 2008 (EDT)

Form extension patches

Hi Evan,

I emailed you a series of patches for your Form extension recently. I just wanted to make sure you saw these. I can go ahead and commit them to SVN if you'd like. Please let me know one way or the other. You can reach me at or on my talk page on Wikipedia, [1].

Hats Off

Evan. Thanks for contributing to a great project. wikitravel is gaining steam. Your choice to remove ALL external links seems to have resolved the issue of "intentional vandalism". Citing sources of information is more journalistic in nature and will continue to enhance wikitravel as a credible travel source.

Please pass this to anyone who may be more appropriate.

In using & contributing to pages for several locations, have often wished there was major section specifically for (links to) photos and maps. Would help everyone focus there when trying to visualize a location, with opportunity to insert or use many more sources.

Section need not be at expense of photos/maps scattered throughout current articles.

Regards, john henne

Evan, the Helsinki article seems to have problems. I received the following error message Warning: gzinflate() [function.gzinflate]: buffer error in /var/www/wikitravel/mw-1.11.2/includes/Revision.php on line 595

Separating interwiki & interlanguage

Hey Evan! On Wikitravel:19_January_2006, you wrote:

I've separated the "other sites" interwiki links from interlanguage links.

May I ask, how you did that? This feature is pretty cool, but I can't find it anywhere in mediawiki. Have you written it yourself? --MrTweek ( 15:49, 25 August 2008 (EDT))

Collapsible TOC Sub-List

Hello. I've been researching a way to make collapsible table of content sub-list with mediawiki. Can you possibly give me some help figuring this out, such as the code you used or a quick tutorial?

I noticed somebody else was looking for the same information in an early post on your talk page. It might be beneficial to the mediawiki community to make a tutorial available for this modification or an extension.

Thanks. Philbar 00:16, 15 November 2008 (EST)
