Bishnupur pics[edit]

Thanks. I did not think the pics to be bright enough for Wikishared but now that you want it I will do it on some other day, but don't worry. I will remember. I will upload a few more pictures in the nexr few days for some other pages. I have earlier uploaded Scotland pics for Wikishared. -- P.K.Niyogi 10:31, 30 December 2006 (EST)

Wikitravel:Discover criteria[edit]

copied from User talk:203.144.143.10

Thanks for your interest in keeping Wikitravel:Discover high-quality, but I think you may have gone too far. Note that the guidance says that referenced articles "should" have a status of Usable or above, not that they must have such status. Because the list of trivia there is not very long, we are being forced to use some material from Outline articles to avoid running out of stuff. I wish it weren't so, but since it is, I've reverted your changes. (Incidentally, I echo Ryan's entreaty to create an account.) -- Bill-on-the-Hill 09:38, 3 January 2007 (EST)

As in another case I've had edits reverted for pretty much the exact opposite reason, I've clarified the Wikitravel:Discover#Criteria section - hope the wording is acceptable to all. Apologies for making it necessary to revert, thanks for taking the time to explain. ~ 203.144.143.10 11:14, 3 January 2007 (EST)
That wording looks like an improvement to me. Thanks. -- Bill-on-the-Hill 11:41, 3 January 2007 (EST)

Admin nomination[edit]

I've nominated User:Cacahuate to become an admin; please comment on Wikitravel:administrator nominations when you have some time. --Evan 01:25, 6 January 2007 (EST)

Hi Bill - As this heading is applicable, I'll add my reply to your invitation regarding the admin post here. Thanks for your kind words. However, I still feel that I'd prefer to just plod along as a casual visiting-editor adding info to articles about places that I am familiar with. Also, at the moment I have some free time to play around on the computer. Later this Spring and also later in the year I may not even have access to the web, so there will be a long periods of inactivity. So, I again reiterate my original response, though I appreciate your invitation to become a more committed member of the WT community. Take it easy. WindHorse 00:31, 10 January 2007 (EST)

Island Peak edits[edit]

There was nothing at all wrong with your edits that I rolled back. I simply screwed up -- meant to click the "Patrolled" button and clicked the wrong button (one that we admins have) to do a revert. Sorry about that. I've undone the damage I did. -- Bill-on-the-Hill 10:42, 13 January 2007 (EST)

No problem and no harm done - but I appreciate you letting me know. WindHorse 10:51, 13 January 2007 (EST)

Wikitravel:Votes_for_deletion#Image:Example.jpg[edit]

I saw your request for me to explain my suspicions about this image. I explain my suspicions tomorrow. It's been about over a month since I requested information about the image so I'll have to do a little more detective work as to what my initial objections were. I do remember seeing the image being used in some very unusual, and somewhat suspect editing. If I recall correctly, I deleted the image from several pages because it's supposedly an image of Bophut Beach, but was on pages that were in no way connected to Bophut Beach. Anyhow, I'll see what I can come up with and get back to you. -- Andrew H. (Sapphire) 00:24, 14 January 2007 (EST)

Well, someone's been adding this random photo to random pages again. See Talk:Chinese phrasebook - Traditional and South-western provinces (Papua New Guinea). I'd delete these pages, but I'll keep them around so you can look at them. This is similar to what I encountered a while back, but it was on all kinds of other pages. Anyhow, I'll give you a more definitive answer later. -- Andrew H. (Sapphire) 00:29, 14 January 2007 (EST)

Now, that I've taken a closer look I may be paranoid about a user who accidentally adds the image to pages by typing "example" a lot. Anyhow, I've sent an email off to the user and a Google search leads me to believe that the user did spend upwards of 11 years in Thailand and may have recently moved to the UK so hopefully if these are the same persons he'll be able to afford a few minutes to respond. -- Andrew H. (Sapphire) 00:56, 14 January 2007 (EST)

Stars in the making[edit]

Hey Bill! Any further thoughts on the discussion you started and that I ran away with? Cacahuate 09:20, 19 January 2007 (EST)

RE:Hiking in South Africa[edit]

Used to hike and camp quite a bit when I was younger, but priorities change and currently I don't really have a lot of time for that.

I've have a look at wikioutdoors, but since I have not actually hike the trails (or at least not done so lately) I don't think I am the best person to supply detailed information on them; the best I would be able to supply is consolidations of other people's reviews. I'm not sure I would like to go into that level of detail anyway; I'd rather put my efforts into growing and improving articles under South Africa on wikitravel.

Linking with wikioutdoors seems like a good idea and once I have more information on wikiitravel, I will definitely look at what content can be linked between the two to improve both wikis. NJR_ZA 02:45, 20 January 2007 (EST)

JensAndMarian Discussion[edit]

I've moved the JensAndMarian discussion to Wikitravel talk:Copyleft since ultimately the issue was whether or not someone could revoke the CC-SA license. Hopefully that seems like a reasonable place to archive it, but as always feel free to revert if you think terms of use is more appropriate. -- Ryan 10:42, 2 February 2007 (EST)

Cambridge for DoTM[edit]

Bill. I've asked a couple of questions about you (opposition) to Cambridge as DOTM. I would be grateful for your feedback. -- DanielC 14:35, 4 February 2007 (EST)

Re: Regions in New Mexico[edit]

Hey there Bill, I moved them to comply with anc/regions, and as you point out, forgot to deal with the redirect links... I'll get on that now, sorry for the mess  :) - Cacahuate 12:03, 24 February 2007 (EST)

Alright, think I got them all - Cacahuate 14:40, 24 February 2007 (EST)
I double checked a lot of the ones that I was correcting and they seemed to be displaying correctly, which ones aren't? Just curious so I'm aware of the glitches and can avoid/fix in the future... - Cacahuate 17:53, 24 February 2007 (EST)
Ah, I see what you mean... I've come across that before, why don't they display and how can it be fixed? I see you making tiny changes to the articles, are you doing something in addition to that that fixes it? Just curious for future... - Cacahuate 18:01, 24 February 2007 (EST)
Every article that I touched I fixed the isin on, I think... something else of note, I was just looking at Taos, which had broken navigation, and I purge the cache for the page and then the breadcrumb worked correctly... - Cacahuate 18:14, 24 February 2007 (EST)
So actually this is now tying into the other discussion about orphaned pages... I fixed all of the pages that were linked to from the region articles, but anything that wasn't I would have no way of finding... is there a way to search by isIn? [IsIn=North (New Mexico)]? - Cacahuate 18:22, 24 February 2007 (EST)
Also I just went through all the other regions and corrected the ones I missed, just so you don't do double work... during the first round I was going from "what links here" on the region pages, which is why I missed some... still curious though, is there a way to search by "isIn" to find orphaned pages? - Cacahuate 18:48, 24 February 2007 (EST)

Los Alamos[edit]

Los Alamos? No wonder you think NM is higher in elevation than the rest of the Southwest. I can't believe that you reverted my edits--especially considering that the language in the earlier version was informal and not appropriate (who the hell calls it the "Rio" other than a reformed Texan?). Ph.D.? I can't bear to imagine the quality of your dissertation. If your reversion of my edits was out of spite resulting from my prior difficulties with you and your cronies, then I can only conclude that your refusal to accept obvious improvements to a compromised article is the product of imbecilic thought on your part. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 76.18.80.24 (talkcontribs)

I'll ignore the childish insults and stick with the facts. New Mexico has the fourth highest average elevation of any of the United States, behind Colorado, Wyoming and Utah, in that order; an almanac (for example the on-line netstate.com) will confirm this. It's therefore higher on average than "most of" the other Southwest states, i.e., Arizona and Nevada. Walk around any of the communities on the Rio Grande and you'll hear people refer to the "Rio" with complete confidence that their meaning will be understood. (Many of those people, btw, would be glad to take a large chunk out of you with a sharp object if you call them "Texans.") All of this just in case anyone is reading who isn't suffering from the same peculiar mental pathology as whoever wrote the rant in the previous paragraph. -- Bill-on-the-Hill 19:32, 24 April 2007 (EDT)

Thanks[edit]

Hi Bill - thanks for catching my mistaken attempt to create Wikitravel:Votes for deletion/March 2007. I'm not sure what happened there, but I'll go back and read Wikitravel:How to start a new page a few times to make sure it doesn't happen again. -- Ryan 20:34, 4 March 2007 (EST)

Job[edit]

It sounds like you have an awesome job. Thanks for keeping me safe! (What's Iran up to?) Also, do you have a license to kill? -- Sapphire(Talk) • 05:07, 12 March 2007 (EDT)

Arizona#Regions[edit]

If you have any input on Arizona's regions, check out Talk:Arizona#Cities. Thanks! -- Fastestdogever 08:48, 19 April 2007 (EDT)

Cloudcroft[edit]

A new user just created an article for Cloudcroft NM which opened with a few obviously untrue statements about the place (e.g. second largest city in the state) which I've removed. The rest of it looks fairly believable, but I figure a New Mexican might recognize any other fibs more readily than I would. - Todd VerBeek 09:25, 7 May 2007 (EDT)

Mount Donna Buang[edit]

Ah, OK. I'll treat those with a bit more care in the future then. --NJR_ZA 11:55, 8 May 2007 (EDT)

RE; Forest way[edit]

Hi, thanks for your 'talk' I'm gonna try adn get sustrans, the Uk cycle path building people to give me some information - so I could try and write a South East England Cyclepath page; it could be either an intinery, a travel topic or a simple article. there are loads of paths so people could travel as 'cycletourists'..... I don't really know, I'll write it and then see what other wikitraellers decide would be good

Admin needed[edit]

Hi, Bill. Wanted to advise that there are some new pages that are probably speedy deletes.. not sure how you guys patrol this. See Special:Contributions/123.112.100.111 -thanks OldPine 21:55, 30 May 2007 (EDT)

Got 'em. -- Ryan • (talk) • 22:07, 30 May 2007 (EDT)

New search engine[edit]

I just wanted to give a heads-up: we're testing a new search engine on review (http://wikitravel.org/review/Special:Search). It's the one that Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects use. It's nothing fancy, but it's more accurate and faster than the default MediaWiki search. Could you give it a couple of sample searches and give your feedback on shared:Tech:Lucene search? I think we want to roll it out in the next week or so, and it'd be good to make sure it's working OK. --Evan 12:51, 12 June 2007 (EDT)

Soviet Georgia[edit]

Hi Bill, just out of curiosity—how did you wind up in Soviet Georgia? --Peter Talk 00:41, 15 June 2007 (EDT)

Things to do in Uppsala when you're dead[edit]

Hi Bill, I added some entries to the Uppsala article's "Do" section. Do you think it would be OK to upgrade it to Guide again? Metaur 15:09, 1 August 2007 (EDT)

Hello again. Do you think that Uppsala is a guide now? What about Gothenburg? Metaur 18:30, 9 August 2007 (EDT)

Boca Raton[edit]

I appreciate your response, and yes, I knew I could edit and remove, but since I am new here, but not new at a wiki, I wanted to make sure that this amount of advertising, whould be removed. I think that this amount of restaurants is 'overkill, and will delete and leave a few for lunch, dinner or a specialty food. The list looks like a telephone book, and has no place on a site like this. Now that I know, and I will read the link you sent me, I will start editing as many articles as I can find. While I am not a great traveler, I am a good editor and will both edit and add pictures as many areas that need it, as I can find and keep writing on Florida, my home town. Flowergirl 14:59, 4 August 2007 (EDT)

Thanks, I checked out the site you mentioned, and yes, I can see how great it looks. Will edit accordingly. Flowergirl 21:02, 4 August 2007 (EDT)

Bronzeville[edit]

Thanks! That one was mostly Peter's baby, but I did have the pleasure of calling the hotels for rates and descriptions. As far as I know, this is the only travel guide to Bronzeville, so most of the hotel owners were unaccustomed to describing their rooms over the phone. ("It's an ordinary room!" said one woman, and I thought about using that in the guide, but I couldn't figure out how to communicate her sense of bewilderment and vague indignance at the very question in print.) Gorilla Jones 21:38, 5 August 2007 (EDT)

New Mexico[edit]

Could you email me at cjensen@acm.org ? -- Colin 23:19, 18 August 2007 (EDT)

I'd also appreciate a way to contact you. I found your email once upon a time ago when I was looking at LANL's website, is it ok to email you using that email? -- Sapphire(Talk) • 04:36, 19 August 2007 (EDT)

Redundancy[edit]

Bad news -- the robots are taking over again. Jpatokal 11:13, 11 September 2007 (EDT)

Blacklist[edit]

Nothing wrong with that blacklist you added, but I have changed it to be more generic so the whole domain is blacklisted. if you go to www.(thedomain) you will see why. --NJR_ZA 02:02, 13 October 2007 (EDT)

Vandalism[edit]

Thank you, thank you, thank you. I thought I was the only one who felt that way. Yet another time I find your thinking to be well-reasoned and sage (no Southwest reference intended). For me, watching you think is one of the best things about WT. -- OldPine 11:56, 19 October 2007 (EDT)

Sligo[edit]

Bill, Thanks for upgrading the Sligo article to Guide status.
I know no-one "owns" an article, but it is nice to see one of your babies getting rewarded! Regarding your tips/recommendations for improvements, I've amended the "Eat" listings to show by price-range, and I'm having a look at some of the verbosity (isn't that a great word?!) I've thought about a map, and I'll think a bit more about it, although it looks like it'd take a bit of work. I'll maybe try it out though.
I'll have a look at the vandalism policy conversation in more detail later, but sounds like something to be looked into in greater detail. Thanks again for your helpful comments. --The.Q 05:53, 22 October 2007 (EDT)

Brachiosaurus photo?[edit]

Funny you should ask! I was just looking for one and, sadly, there is only one photo available with appropriate licensing and it is not of very high quality. I've now uploaded it in case you would like to use it. --Peter Talk 17:26, 28 October 2007 (EDT)

Deleting pages question?[edit]

What does one do with a page like Vishal mundada? Do you just delete it or put it up for a vote?--Wandering 16:30, 5 November 2007 (EST)

Don't mean to dump these on you but I don't know where the speedy delete candidates should go and here are a couple of others. Manigango, Mufasa. If you think that this sort of thing will get caught sooner rather than later anyway, let me know and I'll ignore them!--Wandering 18:37, 6 November 2007 (EST)

Page Protection time format[edit]

Hi, Bill. I went to protect a page a couple times lately, but didn't know how to format the time in the expiration box. Did you find the answer to that and can we maybe post it on the page that comes up? -- OldPine 19:29, 25 November 2007 (EST)

Ah, OK, it says "Expiry", so I thought it was looking for an exact time such as "14:00 26 November 2007" or something. -- OldPine 22:34, 25 November 2007 (EST)

Gay travel[edit]

There should be a VFD tag on that page since there is a discussion on the VFD page. I was going to add it, but you've protected the page and I did not want to tamper with that. Pashley 20:00, 25 November 2007 (EST)

Itchy trigger finger! Not sure how that happened but, most likely, I wasn't paying attention. --Wandering 17:05, 2 December 2007 (EST)
