Insects are a vital food source for most of the world. It is only until recently have they been introduced to the U.S. as an alternative protein source of virutally endless supply.

Here are some insect food facts:

  • Entomophagy is the term for consuming insects as food.
  • There are more than 1900 edible insect species on the planet.
  • The environmental cost of farming insects is low, takes up a fraction of the land and is more efficient than farming traditional livestock.
  • Insects are rich in protein, calcium, iron, zinc and a source of good fats.
  • Insect farming is relatively low tech, offering new livelihood options for those in need.

This tour celebrates the restaurant "pioneers" in America attempting to show that this forward thinking food source can be seriously delicious.

  • Dan Sung Sa, 2775 Telegraph Ave(between Merrimac St & 28th St). Lurking on this Korean restaurants menu is a spicy chrysalis silkworm soup.

The ever changing menu consists entirely of insects and features items such as Mixed fried insects, wax moth larvae tacos and toffee meal worms over vanilla ice-cream.
  • 99 Chicken, 2781 El Camino Real,Santa Clara CA 95051 . Most noted for their delicious Korean style chicken dishes by the locals. On the menu is the Bundaegi Bok Um, a sizzling clay pot dish featuring fried spicy pupal (insect larva).
