Thuringia (Thüringen) is a state of Germany.

Thuringia is one of the least known German provinces amongst foreign travelers but enjoys a good reputation with local vacationers.

A predominantly mountainous and forested region, Thuringia is also known for a quartet of beautiful ancient cities and the Wartburg Castle - regarded by Germans as the most important castle in the country.

Thuringia's boundaries are Bavaria (specifically Franconia) to the south and west, Saxony to the north, and the Bohemian forests of the Czech Republic to the east.

Cities

  • Erfurt — state capital
  • Jena — town of the biggest university in Thuringia (and home to Goethe and Schiller, too)
  • Weimar — town of Goethe and Schiller
  • Eisenach — home of Wartburg castle
  • Saalfeld — former capital of what is now the British royal family
  • Rudolstadt — site of Germany's largest folk music festival
  • Mühlhausen — historic home of Johann Sebastian Bach, John A. Roebling (builder of the Brooklyn Bridge) and of the peasants' leader, Thomas Muentzer

Other destinations

  • The Hainich Forest - Germany's thirteenth national park with its magnificent tree-top walk
  • The Thuringian Forest - national park and winter sport centre

Stay safe

The state of Thuringia is generally safe. However, never leave your belongings such as wallets, luggage, and any other bags off you on the streets, you might get them stolen. And the polizei at the police station don't speak English well so they won't be too helpful even if you face the trouble.
